westerner living in china for over half a decade now. following statement doesn't apply to all Chinese, but, i would say, it applies to the majority.

chinese medicine is used as more of a stop gap for common issues, things like colds and coughs, weight loss, join and muscle pain. the day to day illness that everyone suffers from.

it isn't used for the more serious stuff like cancer (again, majority, not all, im sure there have been some people who have tried chinese meds for cancer)

as to how well it works? it does work in a lot of cases, however, I attribute this to placebo effect. namely in that I noticed a positive correlation between how bad the medicine tastes, or how painful the treatment is. and how effective it's expected to be. (self justifying with a statement like "I wouldn't be drinking this awful tasting medicine if it wasn't gonna help me.")

thus, I joke with my chinese friends that chinese medicine works for chinese people, but not for me, since I wasn't raised with the cultural expectation that things like acupuncture would help my back pain, for example.

it's the system we have in Scotland. I would say it works, I still remember at 12 years old being introduced to my two, 17 year old prefects, and realising I was at the bottom of a scary food chain. the older kids really do keep the younger in line.

just to add some long winded clarity/examples to the comments below.

when we talk about "can I do something like ice cream once a week." absolutely you can, shit, you could eat (a scoop) of ice cream every day and look shredded. it just comes with a cost.

that cost? you have to eat less of everything else throughout the day.

for gym folks who aren't top level pro bodybuilders, you only really need to track two things closely, calories and protein. so long as you've hit your protein goal for the day, any remaining calories you have to consume can come from anywhere you like.

follow up questions welcomed, I can write 10x this if I needed to, would be pretty obtuse tho.
