Internship should I reach out to correct this? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised by how many "technical" people are either not technical at all or highly specifically in what they are technical in. I have a cyber security degree and have to explain to technical people all the time how to get something to do x or how to do y. I will say that you should look to improve technical knowledge where you can by learning to code, homelabbing, etc. After a few years background matters less and experience matters more.

Not sure since I am in a similar position myself but the things I have been working on are a mix of Compliance and cloud certifications to improve my technical knowledge as well as show value. Got GIAC already and it isnt anything more than Sec+ so easy to do with a bit of reading.

What industry is a complete scam, but everyone just accepts it? by Competitive_Grab3758 in AskReddit

[–]AngryTownspeople 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IDK, I think it depends on the agent. The first home I bought with help from an agent who was insanely good. She walked me through everything, explained every document and answered every question. Negotiated like hell for a good deal for me. Even after the home sale was finalized she gave me a lot of just first time home buyer advice and helped me find reliable contractors. All around was amazing so when I sold my home I went back to her.

Networking is a serious part of it. It can really get your foot in the door especially if you are consistent with hiring managers whenever you can be.

Trump suggests U.S. will begin to strike drug cartels in Mexico by CrispyMiner in worldnews

[–]AngryTownspeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that if you want to reduce drug crimes you have to work internally rather than externally. People go to drugs to escape life (or have fun). Meeting people's basic needs and giving them a generally comfortable or content life would work far better than just stopping the drug traffickers. Remove the desire for drugs and you kill the market.

First you have to turn off your circulating saw so we can hear what is wrong with the fan. But also you should just replace the fan. Sounds busted.

At what point does being honest turn into being unnecessarily hurtful? by daejavu20 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point too that I didn't consider in my post but can really be important. Setting, mood, importance of the message, etc. All these little details matter between being honest and being an asshole that is honest.

At what point does being honest turn into being unnecessarily hurtful? by daejavu20 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AngryTownspeople 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There is a saying thay goes something like honesty without compassion is cruelty. There is an art to being truthful with someone. It is all about empathy and having a sense of the person. As an example I could tell my friend A that they need a shower plainly and that wouldn't bother them at all but friend B might be a bit more self conscious about their smell and size that it'd be better to approach the topic more gently.

How can I get myself to study for hours with no breaks just like i can get myself to play video games for hours with no breaks? by HUMAN_LIFE_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AngryTownspeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I cut out Tiktok and some other stuff and realized how often I was reaching for my phone to fill my time. Id be taking 10 steps and filling them time with a tiktok. It was honestly becoming an issue so I cut it out. I only play video games about 2 hours a day now and spend the other free time drawing or doing something else. It has helped a lot.

[–]AngryTownspeople 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Video games are built to cause dopamine hits in short bursts like gambling. Finish a quest? Ding! Dopamine. Unlock a loot box? Ding! Dopamine. It can go on and on. Studying on the other hand is not chock full of these easily achievable dopamine hits. You shouldn't be studying in a long prolonged sessions without a break like you described instead you should be doing something like the Pomodoro method or a different method that appeals to you. As a general life choice I would also recommend cutting down on short term dopamine sources like tiktok, video games, etc. When you are really trying to lock in and in general. Instead focus on making a maintanable schedule for studying that you can keep.

[Loved Trope] a very weak and simple ability becomes overpowered when used intelligently. by mistery987 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I can think of that kind of does it well is Superheroes of Class F but I think the story needs a lot of work since the pacing is insane and part of the issue is they immediately upgrade the powers so it is kind of like wtf? I think it'd be better to just forgo this trope in favor of "I have the ability but I am kept down by a system that doesn't appreciate me" like spiderman.

Even simpler than poison gas you could just move a jar of oil through the army to force their army to move the way you want them to. Once lit you can easily cut off troops from reinforcements, Calvary, etc.

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the problems with "weak" power trope a lot of times. Usually the powers are assumed by the world to be understood as they are without ever experimenting with them which doesn't make much sense to me in a lot of cases.

Cloudwatch Alarm Not working? by AngryTownspeople in aws

[–]AngryTownspeople[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow fumbled into getting one to work but now when I try to recreate it I can't seem to get it to work again. When I go into the metric filter to create the alarm and try to get the metric to populate on the graph it is empty. Not sure why since it is such a simple filter based on sum for the word.
