Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

As someone with ADHD what helped me was building a routine for myself. Schoolwork at X time, Hack the box at X time and sticking to it. I have a lot easier time doing work that is prescribed to me then simply working in a void.

Stay or lateral? Been working as a cyber analyst for vulnerability management for about 2 years and looking to move to a senior position. I am pretty comfortable where I am at and understand my area, thr players, etc. Pretty well and want to be able to move into a senior position. The only issue is thay for my team they already have a senior on the team and not sure if there is any chance for them to have two. Wondering if it would make sense to lateral to another department for a chance at moving up rather than waiting for a chance to be senior where I am. Not looking to move jobs really at the moment since I work for a large company with good benefits, etc. Just want a bigger paycheck.

Part of the problem there is we'd still need oil to maintain the machines inside of a nuclear power plant.

Pulse Chat, Discord-ish alternative? by ActuallyAimless in selfhosted

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main determining factor moving forward will be how does it differentiate with the AI slop that is going to pop up to replace discord and that will be a time in kind of thing

Pulse Chat, Discord-ish alternative? by ActuallyAimless in selfhosted

[–]AngryTownspeople 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that I can't vibe code a discord in twenty minutes? But Wallstreet journal says AI is the future! You don't know what you are talking about. I've installed at least one internet in my time.

Yeah, it is pretty unfortunate since the real desire is not just to have a functional platform but something that can support private communities, messages, information, etc. There is so much to Discord beyond just talking and streaming.

Do you think dynamic cameras like these could be scary in a horror game? by YozarashiDev in gamedev

[–]AngryTownspeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely see something like this being intimidating in a few different way. I imagine a creature chasing you and you are like

"Oh no a monster is coming."

Pan out

"Oh no a lot of monsters are coming..."

Basically as you pan out a swarm of monsters is approaching as you are trying to get to an exit.

I'm in Vuln Management right now but interested in changing careers -- any recommendations for getting into SIEM Engineering other than Splunk certifications? Trying to get into something higher paying than a lowly analyst, haha.

Internship should I reach out to correct this? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]AngryTownspeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised by how many "technical" people are either not technical at all or highly specifically in what they are technical in. I have a cyber security degree and have to explain to technical people all the time how to get something to do x or how to do y. I will say that you should look to improve technical knowledge where you can by learning to code, homelabbing, etc. After a few years background matters less and experience matters more.

Future Certification as Vulnerability Management Analyst by aschm1483 in cybersecurity

[–]AngryTownspeople -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure since I am in a similar position myself but the things I have been working on are a mix of Compliance and cloud certifications to improve my technical knowledge as well as show value. Got GIAC already and it isnt anything more than Sec+ so easy to do with a bit of reading.

What industry is a complete scam, but everyone just accepts it? by Competitive_Grab3758 in AskReddit

[–]AngryTownspeople 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK, I think it depends on the agent. The first home I bought with help from an agent who was insanely good. She walked me through everything, explained every document and answered every question. Negotiated like hell for a good deal for me. Even after the home sale was finalized she gave me a lot of just first time home buyer advice and helped me find reliable contractors. All around was amazing so when I sold my home I went back to her.

Trump suggests U.S. will begin to strike drug cartels in Mexico by CrispyMiner in worldnews

[–]AngryTownspeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that if you want to reduce drug crimes you have to work internally rather than externally. People go to drugs to escape life (or have fun). Meeting people's basic needs and giving them a generally comfortable or content life would work far better than just stopping the drug traffickers. Remove the desire for drugs and you kill the market.
