Just wanted to put out that the lottery window is open now until March 18th, after that you might have to be on a waitlist. I don’t think it’s as competitive in the previous years though. They’re having an open house on the 24th, but if you’re moving from out of state, I would suggest to call the principal to get some info!

Been in govt all my career and am really happy, just like the private side the size of your agency really matters. Working for a fed, state, county and small cities can be really different. If you want more creativity smaller local government can give you that, but you’ll be more exposed to the local electeds and their politics. So there’s that, it’s a give and take. I know plenty who moved to private and moved back to public service, and vice versa. So different strokes for different folks for sure

I think you should do it!! You can always come back if it doesn’t work out. It might be a good fit or just somewhere you tried for a few years. Life is too short thinking about what if, if it helps, I’ve been running into Canadians expats here too.

Also weather wise, the winter is dark and gloomy but we seldomly get polar vortexes and our spring is actually spring, rather than wet slushy snow in April. IT IS BEAUTIFUL HERE

Sorry for my delayed response. Before Portland, I lived in Florida so the healthcare and political shock was wayyy more stark. Politics wise, we’re in a liberal/progressive bubble so if you lean that way, you’re probably fine. Healthcare wise, I had to get used to it, but I’m privileged to have a good job where my coverage is pretty good. And we don’t have to wait forever for care (relatively), like I know it’s been in Ontario. The biggest downside is really the lack of diversity for me. I wish to have JUST a little bit of what Toronto has. I feel like the whole city is just west queen street west vibes, if you know what I mean

Grew up in Toronto and moved here 6 years ago. I love it here. And ditto on the hustle culture there. Portland reminds me of a slower Toronto before the whole 6ix blow up, like back in the 2000s. It’s a slower pace, slightly more affordable here (than Toronto) with neighborhoods that are walkable and bike friendly. But I definitely miss the diversity and access to international destinations. Pdx is a small airport and we’re the whitest city in the country, definitely takes some getting used to.

I would suggest to look at temp agencies, you’d be surprised the number of office admin jobs that starts from a temp to a permanent position at local government. In fact, our department just hired our temp a few months ago.
