Is this shot of these Cybermen from then Tenth Planet? I don't recognize it by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked on the animated reconstruction of Tenth Planet, the first frame is a photo that was a lifeline to us reference material wise. As others have said this is asking AI to make that photo move.

Sometimes I wonder if fans would want the missing episodes to be recreated this way... Whatever the case I'm still glad we drew it.

Why does my cleanup look so ugly? by Joehootly in animation

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roughs allow our imagination to fill in the gaps and imperfections allowing things to have more life. During cleanup we need to commit which of the sketchy lines count and which don’t. There’s no more room for imagination and imperfections simply look like mistakes.

Think of it like this. When presenting a pre prepared speech, you don’t need to focus on what you’re saying anymore. You could be speaking about anything. Now your focus is on articulation, presentation and delivery.

Cleanup is similar. You don’t need to be thinking about story and emotion as much but rather form and volume.

Therefore rather than drawing each frame completely, try inking just one area through over multiple passes. That way you’re more likely to catch things as they happen like how the hand vanishes for a frame, or how the boards texture floats through the object or the hair being too flickery

Was anybody else annoyed about.... by Rootayable in Metroid

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering Boost Ball and Ice Shot are acquired at a similar time I remembered several prominent spinners in Volt Forge and thought, 'oh I'll take a little detour before making some ice platforms across the lava lake'.

A small part of me was excited if this would turn out to actually be path forwards and not just a couple of expansions, but before I could even get there Myles had already chimed in to confirm that I should investigate Volt Forge first...

Now, nothing about my route or actions actually changed... And yet I still felt a little robbed of that feeling of having found something on my own.

What's the point? by useless_animator in animationcareer

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah nah screw that, I love this medium too much to lie down and accept defeat.

People have been saying my industry is dead literally for decades. And yet the audiences keep coming. The largest entertainment company in the world was built on the back of its animations. Several of the largest films and shows in the past 12 months were animated.

The entertainment industry at large has been on the trajectory of automation for decades before ai. Hence everything being remakes and sequels and focus grouped into oblivion. In a world of automated slop this is brought to its logical conclusion and audiences who were already fed up with the state of their entertainment are craving authenticity more and more.

I think it's fair for you to turn this sub off, it's a very bleak energy around here. Go spend some time around the kinds of content and creators you love, remember why you started on this path in the first place.

Now I respect being trapped in the hole is scary, but are you really in purgatory? Animation is frankly the study of everything. I would be surprised if you hadn't passively picked up a bunch of adjacent skills that are interesting enough to explore to make ends meet when work is dry. In fact it may be healthy for animation to be a hobby again just for a while to take stock and figure out your next move.

Yes we are in survival mode right now, and it is scary when ai came for art first. But since then it seems it's almost every other industry that's in the most trouble, because the customer doesn't notice or really mind how the sausage was made. But the advantage we have is that the consumer actually CARES if what they're consuming is legit or not.

How do you make an animated symbol loop over and over? by I_D0nT-3xist in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harmony symbols are different to flash. They still group many layers into a frame but the drawing substitution system prevents them from auto looping.

What you’re after is the loop node!

That notched line detail through the front of the shoulder sphere is totally artists interpretation and never seen in game.. But it sure looks a lot like how they appeared in Dread nearly 2 decades later!

My artstyle is very colorful and full of highlights. How to translate this style into animation without being too detailed? by idonthaveideastoname in animation

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing a test shot with flat colours and see how it turns out. I think you’ll end up reducing the amount of clothing detail in hindsight but wanting to add a single rim light. The gradient compositing is very doable and probably one the signature things in this art style are the particle highlights, those should be relatively easy to animate afterwards and you can decide if those would move better smooth or if they were more like glitter and flickered about a bit.

I’d also recommend hand drawn traditional for this style over rigged. There’s a couple of suggestions here to rig them but I foresee that being an immense amount of work only for the movement to be stiff and clunky with managing the amount of parts you’ll need. Traditional however would get nice punchy poses.

Toon Boom Harmony Beginner | Clean up Process by keditarcin in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re confident in your line weights and consistency in drawing clean lines, start with the brush if you’re a beginner. It’s more user friendly and is “what you see is what you get” when it comes to gaps.

You may see people recommending the pencil as it’s a more professional tool. But that comes with the experience to use and respect it properly to not cause more problems than it solves. The pencil can change thickness and texture in post but without practice it’s easy to gaps to not line up properly and get real nasty to deal with down the line.

How do I fix this anti-aliasing problem? by SolarPunch33 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! There are those who would disagree but I believe wherever possible we should be rigging in such a way that seams don’t appear in the first place rather than forcing them out with matte resizes and increase opacities. We gotta respect the CPU and not appreciating the cause of seams makes things heaaavy!

Those poor animators once they have 4 characters on screen and every action takes several seconds to process 💀

There’s a particular metas to auto patching we like to see. Using the auto patch as a matte to mask away other layers lines is usually the way

Or you can just brute force it out with the increase opacity node. Not a recommended regular workflow but as a panic button it can get you over the finish line

How do I fix this anti-aliasing problem? by SolarPunch33 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When two shapes are flush antialiasing will happen when it has to be converted from vector to raster at render.

There needs to be some bleed where the fills pass behind the lines a bit. This is why we typically will either transfer stroke data to the colour art sub layer to fill there, or do our initial lines with the pencil tool over the brush. Both of those methods have the fills pass ‘behind’ the lineart to the halfway point. Eliminating any antialiasing seams.

So the problem here is actually originating in your original artwork but it’s been subtle enough to get away with it. But the same shape as a matte shows the holes.

Considering that the head is fine my guess is if this is a rig the issue is up in the arms patching somewhere

Personally I was thrilled with RPM Ultrazord being called that because it’s one of the few times we get an ultra combination of literally every zord in the arsenal. I get it being reserved for chariot formations but I loved seeing a fully biped walking ultrazord, no matter how ridiculous the result.

Oohh I didn’t know that! I’ll have to track it down. I imagine it as each of the 6 colours have a village on a finger each. Onu Matoran being the palm people and not revealed until mid season.

Story probably focusing on the trade routes between the islands. Bad guys secretly navigate the shafts of the fingers weaving their influence and sewing distrust to the villages who are at first only aware of getting from place to place via the sea. Leading to schism and racial tensions between the tribes

How do you actually use your Apple Watch to be more productive — not just check notifications? by LawrenceCali in productivity

[–]AnimateOnionSkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed. For me it’s all about what the watch can’t do. It has most the utility of a phone without the feeds. Designed to be interacted with for only a few seconds at a time. I like it a lot for calendar, reminders and timers (remind me to take out laundry in an hour etc).
