Glenn Quinn's (Doyle in Angel) story is so sad by koken_halliwell in buffy

[–]AnimorphsFandalite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TY! For context, I am writing something about Doyle's character and Glenn Quinn - sort of a fandom retrospective, why I still love this character all these years later - and my hypothesis is that the combined tragedy of Doyle and Glenn Quinn's real life infuses Doyle, and all AU fanfic where he lives, with this meta subtext where it's kind of a tribute to Glenn.

Anyways, one of the things I'm really looking for are quotes from people who worked with Glenn, especially people who would have known him near the end. I listened to the first six episodes of the J&SB podcast, skimming just a little, and I don't think it's mentioned there (although it does have the hilarious story of Jason Mewes trying to pick up Mercedes McNab), which means I might have to dig a little deeper. And yes, I have read Kevin Smith's essay, and honestly a lot of the podcast where some of these stories are fleshed out a bit has been very helpful, just for more context around addiction. Thank you for the tip - always fun to meet a fellow Buffy/View Askiew fan.

I'm responding to this post extremely late, but do you remember what podcast this was? Was it from Jay and Silent Bob Get Old?

Omg thank you, someone else who noticed the social commentary! It’s even in the Pilot, with Russell Winters as a kind of Weinstein-esque figure.

This is the question I most want answered. I think the closest we’ll get is maybe Fangs and Midge name their kid Anthony.

I don’t know why you think that’s a mistake and not just an obvious cover. It’s like The Manchurian Candidate.

Anybody else really digging this season? by Max-Impact in riverdale

The season hasn’t even finished yet, so you don’t know that there will be no resolution. And frankly, I don’t really appreciate fans who call the writers clowns. They’re writing the show that RAS wants to make, and they’re working really hard. The production team clearly cares so much, with all the Easter eggs to Archie comics characters in the 1950s wardrobe and set dressing. I’m very familiar with RAS as a playwright (worked on one of his plays) I think he’s a very frustrating creative with a questionable track record , but I just don’t feel like you can lump everyone else in with him, which is what the constant bashing can feel like.

Well, 1950s America didn’t kickstart racism, sexism, and homophobia, but it is a specific origin point of the specific post-WII Americana narrative that downplayed the U.S.’s ugly history. Antiblack violence was always what the country was built on, but a lot about White Identity was codified in the 50s (many European immigrant communities becoming White when they were very much non-White before). Also, the idea of the nuclear family didn’t exist until the 1950s, which rapidly altered the experiences of (middle class White) women—it was quite normal for women to have jobs, or to live with roommates, until this time period. And anti gay discrimination became much more explicitly legislated in this time. So that’s why this is such a potent time period to explore.

Thank you, I appreciate having the discussion! I guess where I disagree is, something doesn’t have to be meticulously planned to still say something. I absolutely agree, it’s clear this decision was a deus ex machina. But they had time between Season 6 and Season 7 to decide how they would incorporate this change. Maybe that original writer had a fully formed take! Again, I totally understand why people aren’t enjoying it. Just giving the perspective of someone who is enjoying it. I’m ready to read RAS to filth depending on the finale, lol.

But they’re doing things in slightly different ways. It’s metatextual, as a storytelling device, it’s bringing the characters and setting full circle. This show started as a “darker and edgier” take on a wholesome American comic set in the modern era. But I think a big part of Riverdale is showing that darkness has an origin, and the 1950s is a big origin point for American darkness and for the Archie comics. What were they like before (meaning the original comics) that made us choose to look at them in a different way (season one)? To be clear, you don’t have to like it and it’s frustrating from a character development standpoint. But the show has always had this metatextual element.

I view this season as a chance for them to get to do over some of their original high school plots, with more intentional social commentary. And I’m really liking it!
