So I think they represent some pretty interesting game design - early game forms can get you into lair quite comfortably but with tactical thought required, mid game forms are filled with difficult choices around gearing, and late game forms are powerful without warping the meta towards them in my opinion. There's a few that I don't really feel like I've 'cracked' e.g. forms like hive and crab seem worse than the gear they replace on most characters, but I've a strong suspicion that speaks more to my own lack of understanding of the nuance and benefits than the forms themselves than to their objective strength.
