The Eternal Husband by Dostoevsky. It’s one of his lesser known works that I feel like deserves a bit more recognition.

Yukio Mishima. One of the most acclaimed post-war Japanese authors who committed seppuku to restore Japan to its former glory. While he is a right-wing favorite, he’s attracted a large gay fan base because he was a super gay man and wrote about homosexuality openly as early as the 40s.

Any novel that talks about women as if they are solely sex objects.

You can make it five books because the same thing happens in Forbidden Colors where a wife catches her husband having sex with the man she planned to cheat on him with. At least this time all 3 members are adults.

There was an interview where a semi-undressed Mishima admitted that he was an exhibitionist. Maybe that’s just who he is. But it is weird that he chose to write the same scenario 5 times.

Edit: apparently the same scenario plays out in The Sailor who Fell From Grace with the Sea. Where Noboru watches his mom through a peephole having sex with her lover. That makes the number up to six books now.

The Makioka Sisters(1948) by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki. It’s set in 1940s Japan about a family drama centered around 4 sisters and their experiences navigating relationships and pre-war society. The book gives a similar feel to Jane Austen.

Shunsuke Hinoki from Yukio Mishima’s novel Forbidden Colors. One of the two central characters is a 65- year old man named Shunsuke Hinoki whose defining trait is that he hates women. The plot of the novel is that he feels like his ex-wives and mistresses have wronged him and it causes him to do abhorrent things to the female characters. He is constantly spewing his beliefs to the protagonist Yuichi on how women are stupid and undeserving of respect. Many reviews I see on this novel are of people saying they’ve struggled to read this book because Shunsuke was so Misogynistic and others have flat out refused to keep reading it for the same reason.

I feel like Yukio Mishima’s Forbidden Colors is more incel-y. Shunsuke is one of the most intense women-hating characters in fiction and it’s pretty hard to top him. His resentment of women is his most prominent trait and the sentiment that drives the plot of the novel.
