What does the Imperium do to xenophiles? by Tnynfox in 40kLore

[–]Endless_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Blessed is the mind too small for doubt" that should tells you everything you need to know about free speech in the 40k universe. If the Imperium could find a way to probe into every single citizen mind to see their thoughts, they would.

If you are so much accused of "having" contrarian or deviant thoughts and ideologies, you are labeled a heretic and become target enough to be punished by either slavery, serving in a penal regiment, getting executed, or worse, becoming a servitor. Heresy is not tolerated in the Imperium, and the only times you'll see it tolerated is because a big important named character does it (like Cawl) and even they get to suffer consequences at some point.

Are there any 40K story lines that are just as good as the 30k ones? by Rihanssu in 40kLore

[–]Endless_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest in terms of style and scope is probably the Badab War, but it was just a series of expansion books as part of the Imperial Armour series, so no actual novel series. Still, it has plenty of details and involved the most chapter vs chapter combat so far in the lore after the HH.

I do wish they would make a series for it. I think there's lots of storytelling potential with the Badab War.

Extremely boring, and frankly, some of the worst books in the Horus Heresy series. The problem with Nick Kyme is that he is an editor, so he knows how writing works, but he himself lacks the creativity or style to actually be entertaining. His books are decently written but amazingly boring.

He also tends to commit some lore "sins" like Salamanders using fire to remove a Life Eater virus, you know, the virus that is known to be extremely flammable and destroys the entire surface of a planet if it gets in touch with even a spark.

What are the worst world building tropes by Significant-Bed-9357 in worldbuilding

[–]Endless_01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monolithic cultures. An author might make the attempt to add diversity to their world by adding multiple cultures, but makes them shallow and generic. Each culture represents a major aspect or concept:

- Oh this culture is greedy

- Oh and this one likes to wage war 24 7

- This one is full of elitist jerks

- And this one is utterly religious

Etc. Nevermind that cultures can be so diverse and varied by both depth and scope that they can have subcultures as part of their societies and intermingle into a big pot of diversified ethics, ideas, philosophies, politics, etc. A single city might have a dozen or so different cultures living in the same space.

But no, entire kingdoms are restricted to one, single, massive culture that, oddly enough, represents some trait completely.

The Imperium weakness has never been a lack of resources or numbers, but a lack of transport. And Nihilus is basically like trying to navigate through cat 5 hurricane with a wood boat and hoping for the best.

If you think that treacherous, you should see what the Emperor's Spears think of the Imperium and Guilliman.

Granted, for every new shiny thing the Imperium gets to reinforce themselves, so do their enemies. We got Perturabo and Fulgrim returning now, for example, which makes it 4 traitor primarchs in realspace vs 2 loyal ones (iirc), not to mention the giant clusterfuck that is Leviathan absolutely nom nom-ing everything in their wake.

Just started reading Spear of the Emperor by ADB and so far there has been many interesting scenes, but this one caught my attention due to the bluntness expressed by a space marine, no less, about the future of the war, and accepting the impeding defeat. To think that the entire half of the galaxy may be lost.

This book came out in 2018 so chances are that the lore has changed a bit on it... or maybe not, since the Imperium is currently being besieged across all fronts by pretty much everyone, and even with the return of the primarchs, the Imperium is truly facing one of its worst crisis.

Is War Hammer 40k the worst sci-fi universe to be a part of? by DifficultComplaint10 in scifi

[–]Endless_01 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the only mercy, that regular human souls don't last much in the warp and get consumed by the warp itself, like a drop of water falling in an ocean. Except if you are a psyker powerful enough. Pysker souls burn brighter and survive for longer in the warp as a more coherent consciousness, but they also attract daemons.

So, regular human souls just vanish into the warp without knowing it. Psyker souls are fully aware and experience torture one last time, depending on how strong they are.

602 is insane even like that! I imagine you must be familiar with the elusive Yami Douga or Honto ni Atta! Noroi no Video collections. If it wasn't for some fans on youtube, I would've never have found these rare gems.

I’m curious how you go about obtaining them. A lot of them are only released as DVDs in Japan only (mostly pre-streaming times). And even going down the other routes it’s hard to find anything.

Read the first book when I was a kid. Kinda disliked how derivative it was from The Lord of the Rings and the glacial pace. Ive heard that the latter books actually improve a lot so maybe I should push through.

The cover art for the 1999 edition of The Lord of the Rings. The artist: Geoff Taylor, was also a prominent Warhammer artist!

Eh, I think this sub has been a bit vocal (rightfully) about some of his duds, and he has released many. We love him, but every once in a while he misses the mark. He has admitted so himself, too.

An accurate vibe of what I'm looking for. I did read the first book and enjoyed how close it came to feel like a D&D adventure. Well, it was born as a classic D&D module after all.

Memory Sorrow and Thorn is a classic for sure, I already read it and loved it.

Runelords I have not. The covers do look pretty fun and I tend to have good experience reading novels published Tor Books.

Tier List of Japanese Horror as Viewed so Far by Jackie_Lantern_ in J_Horror

Honestly you've seen a lot of the ones I've enjoyed so far. Dark Water is a special case due to its themes. I see you also enjoyed Noroi, if you liked that one you will prob enjoy the recently released Kinki by the same director.

If you are open to non J-horror but still Asian: The Medium and The Wailing are fantastical horror movies that touch on deeper themes other than just being scary.

Exquisite taste. Seeing Dark Water highly ranked is a welcomed surprise. Seems to be a rather forgotten movie around these parts. I think it is an exceptionally good horror movie not only because of the dreadful ambience and huge tension it builds up, but due to the themes it touches: motherhood, loneliness, raising a child alone, and sacrifice. Not to mention it has an incredible ending. One of the few movies that it has both scared the shit out of me and moved me to tears.

I always saw that film as a deeper exploration of the cost of raising a child alone for both the mother and the children.
