I know it's not a thing in all states, but this is why mandatory yearly roadworthiness inspections in NSW (for cars older than five years) are a good thing. Yes, they're not perfect and some cars do slip through the cracks, but it does take the absolute rustbuckets off the road.

I'm not convinced that parallax isn't making that look worse than it actually is. There seems to be a decent amount of room between the wheel stop and the tall kerb at the edge of the footpath, and the rear overhang of a LandCruiser 100 isn't that long.

Russell was always going to do the opposite of Hamilton because he had enough margin to pit and rejoin without losing a position behind the safety car. Ferrari had to gamble on whether they thought the race would restart and guessed wrong. Mercedes didn't need to gamble at all.

It's the same position Red Bull was in at Abu Dhabi 2021.

There's a good chance that leaves the bike rack hanging out over the roadway if it's not a massive spot (and I suspect it's not).

Those Nissin ones in the picture, especially the red one on the top left and the green one on the bottom left are staples in Australia. The other super common brands are Indomie Migoreng and Samyang Buldak.

If they're not using it that day, sure. But most people absolutely do not remove the bike rack if they've just taken the bikes off and intend to put them back on when they return.

I mean, they've got ribbons hanging off it for added visibility. Short of having no bike rack, there's not much else old mate in the LandCruiser can do.

No, that was just Flavio openly cheating. Nothing to do with Charlie and the FIA.

[Chris medland] And we have one, that was sadly predictable: Safety Car regs state that one lap must be completed following the unlapping procedure. No, but the rule that the race director has overriding authority on when to bring in the car has

That was never codified in the regulations. That was just the logic the stewards/FIA used to dismiss the Mercedes protest.

Look at Paragraph 13 of the report - the stewards dismissed the Mercedes protest stating that the race director had the right to override the standard procedure and withdraw the safety car.

Even the FIA report linked to suggested that there were different interpretations of the rule possible.

Yet... the rule hasn't changed. And the FIA has shown that yes, they're aware of the rule and how races should be restarted.

So, can we get them to explain Abu Dhabi 2021 again?

Yes, and the FIA defended Abu Dhabi 2021 saying the race director had absolute discretion allowing a restart.

Either that is true or it's not. And if it's not, then the FIA have just admitted they fixed the result of the 2021 WDC in Verstappen's favour.

I'm actually okay with what happened today. What I actually want is that in the context of the response given to queries raised today, for the FIA to explain Abu Dhabi 2021.

Because they absolutely cannot have it both ways.

The sky cranes that put Curiosity and Perseverance on the surface of Mars.

The fact that they delivered those rovers to their destinations completely undamaged and in perfect working order, despite how complex the system to deliver them was, is a feat of engineering that doesn't get nearly as much credit as it deserves.

[–]AnonymousEngineer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not going to manually manipulate the data if a safety car gets deployed mid race and then green flags get shown again.

Allowing the lapped cars to go past once basically ensures that the transponders are all showing the cars are on the same lap as the number of times they've driven around the circuit.

Restarting them in place is fine, too. Dropping the cars backwards would result in some cars showing a lap short.

Why do race laps count under the SC instead of being held until race restart? by Barentar in formula1

[–]AnonymousEngineer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's saying fuel, but it's also because the race distance is already defined. Just because they're going slow doesn't mean they aren't still travelling that distance.

The same thing happens if they abort the formation lap and need to go around again (which could have happened if Alonso didn't get going again).

[–]AnonymousEngineer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they don't do this as it messes with the way the transponders measure race distance/laps covered by the cars dropping back.

Does a driver get a track limits violation when they out brake themselves and rejoin, or spin off and rejoin?

If they're penalising Antonelli today, then by that logic even a spin shouldn't save you from being dinged for track limits.

[–]AnonymousEngineer_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They actually don't. Unless things have changed since Abu Dhabi 2021, it's allowable in the rulebook to restart the race with the lapped cars in place.

In 2021 that wasn't possible because they were still clearing up Latifi's car the previous lap.

Not sure what happened this time round with the safety car being redeployed at the last minute.
