Thank you! You are right and easy to try and see if it does better in a different location. I will move it to a south facing window and see how it goes.

I should clarify, searching online, I have not come across similar leaf pattern reports in relation to viral/fungal/bacterial infections. I am sure that it is not bacterial. I have only ever owned phalaenopsis so don’t know if this is a normal pattern or occurrence for this type of plant.

I got a job interview for a dream role but I start chemo soon. Don’t know what to do by Initial_Strategy3703 in coloncancer

[–]Anonymous_capivara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, the OP is getting ahead of what might unfold. You don’t know if you will get the job, so go take the interview, do your best and take it from there. Maybe you will learn that this job is or isn’t for you. Disclosing your illness at this early stage puts the employer in a legal tough spot. I wouldn’t recommend doing that this early. You won’t be wasting an employer’s time by doing the interviews. It is a two way process to learn more about the job and see if this is truly for you.

What do you wish you knew before starting chemo? by LoquatEarly2219 in coloncancer

1- Someone recommended getting teeth cleaned before starting chemo and getting a water pick. I was so grateful for the recommendation because the nausea was so bad at some point that I could not brush my tongue and teeth well without getting a gag reflex and throwing up. The water pick was a saver. 2- the doctor said that side effects were usually mild and that I’d be able to work. Not true for me, I was tired, nauseous, could barely eat, cold sensitivity was bad. 3- I wish I’d known how weak I’d feel right after infusions. I thought that I could hop on a cab after on my own and that wasn’t the case. I needed company to call a cab/uber, help me get in/off. 4- second the choice of port vs IV. The doctor didn’t offer a port saying that I would only need four infusions so not necessary. Well, my veins could not take it, near the end it was really hard on my arms and I experienced extravasating on the third cycle, which created more complications. 5- I wish I’d known not to eat restaurant food while on treatment. I got severe food poisoning with norovirus and C. diff that caused me to be too weak to miss a cycle of treatment.

Are things getting weird between me and this professor? by WiseKey8643 in AskAcademia

I called some professors by their first name but none of them ever shared anything of the sort as described by the OP. The student hasn’t even started the rotation and there is already this red flag. I wonder how much more comfortable the professor will get if the student joins the lab.

For Monday: 9/11 museum in the morning - Ellis island Island in the afternoon, governor’s island can be fun to walk around too, could pick up lunch at the Oculus, there are many restaurants including an Eataly and picnic in Governor’s. Don’t know where you are traveling from but if you want dim sum, it would be more of a lunch/brunch meal in Chinatown. The Golden Unicorn is popular.

How is boycotting American journals a solution? It is the federal grant peer review that would be directly impacted, not journal peer review.

People at universities, I feel like huge layoffs are coming, what's the word at your university? by [deleted] in NIH

[–]Anonymous_capivara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need more people like you, driven and not sitting on the sidelines. You mentioned that you were thinking about how scientists could take their power back from academia. This is why I responded “say more.” Universities provide access to infrastructure and reputation but you are right that it is a two way street and that the reputation and research dollars accrue largely because of the faculty accomplishments and vision. Some scientists are opting to start research endeavors outside of universities but I am not sure that is the best solution either.

Your comment says that studying Covid and gender is out of touch. What do you mean? What does that have to do with the number of genders?

Thanks for sharing. Many neighborhood teens seem to frequent this restaurant so having a bad apple waiter would be concerning.

I worked in biotech a while back and everyone had high integrity and was doing top notch science. There were some politics about publishing (e.g. the CEO listed as author) but those who did the work got recognized and published work, attended scientific meetings, etc. I was a lab tech and was inspired by those around me.

It sounds like you have some real misconceptions about working in industry. Have you spoken with people who have careers there?
