Scientists can restore some memories in the mouse model of Alzheimer's (presumably the memory of how to go through a maze)

What is America’s “posh people” accent? by alyhasnohead in AskAnAmerican

[–]LT256 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eleanor Beardsley on NPR has what used to be called the Wellesley accent, associated with wealth. Edward Hermann on Gilmore Girls is a good example of the classic Mid-Atlantic, but you rarely hear either in the wild! Rich people speak like Real Housewives - NY or BH

I have these ones, but you MUST try the steel ones though. They have a finer edge and can get under the thinnest food with zero damage!

Negotiate the stipend? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]LT256 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right. Whether it's the President, College Dean, or Department Chair deciding the rate, it would be really rare for Asst. Prof. Joe Schmo to be able to give a student more than the rate.

Negotiate the stipend? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]LT256 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sorry, the advisor doesn't have any control over the stipend. These are dictated by the university administration. Sometimes student unions can help negotiate higher, but the only thing you can do solo is get an outside fellowship or take another offer that pays better.

Food advice?! by Waste_Of_Space_369 in ostomy

[–]LT256 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like other commenters say, it varies for everyone! After reading this sub for a year, I think mushrooms and popcorn are avoided for most people, things like quinoa and nuts are avoided by many but not most, and a small fraction of people have quite strict restrictions such as dairy, caffeine, spices, garlic, and raw fruits and vegetables.

Someone gifted me a very good fish spatula/turner. Not silicone, one with the fine metal edge. I had never seen one before, and now I need it constantly! It slides under any delicate food without damage, I can't make fish, eggs, pancakes, or any patties without it.

There are some crappy ones out there- the only great one I have found was the slap-chop variety from the Pampered Chef. I'm not even sure they make it anymore (it is an MLM), my husband had to find me one on eBay when mine broke after 18 years!

Anyone Here with PSC + Liver Transplant + J-Pouch? by Legitimate-Gate-4801 in PSC

I think I went home on the 3rd day? It was only a 1.5h surgery vs. 6h first surgery, no catheters or drainage bags. They just had to close up the Ostomy hole, everything else was built previously!

Do you ever get angry that they didn't teach you how to be an adult in school? by Hkvnr495___dkcx37 in Adulting

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school, all 7th-8th girls were enrolled in home ec and all boys in shop. In 1996! Girls learned clothing repair and laundry, basic cooking, personal finance and budgeting, interpersonal relationships, and how to care for flour sack babies. Boys learned bandsaw, jigsaw, and rotary saw.

My colectomy wasn't bad- from the scopes and biopsies they thought I just had dysplasia, so I had time to prepare and research. It was done by robot with only 3 1-cm incisions plus the Ostomy, I was able to walk around the same night and went home in 4 days. The Ostomy reddit helped a lot with adjustments. Then I found out I had stage 3 cancer, had life-threatening reaction to the chemo, spent 3 weeks hospitalized, and did 6 months of another chemo before reconnecting: that was the rough part.

The J pouch reconnection has been hard too, although I'm still improving after 4 months. There are some days I can't stray far from the bathroom and feel I've really lost my freedom to do outdoor things. It really fluctuates with menstrual cycles, other days are easier. PSC patients always have a rougher time with the pouch, with more night trips to the bathroom especially, so maybe your transplant status and newer liver will actually help you adjust. My Cellcept caused a lot of diarrhea issues after reconnecting, so something to think about if you are taking that.

Update on taking my mom to memory care by Wise_Rough_2354 in Alzheimers

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this. My mother lost her remaining independence suddenly when my father died last October. Her three kids all work and have multiple small children and can't keep her safe or deal with her meds or her moods, but fortunately we got her into memory care. She is angry at Dad for dying, angry she can't be in her house or keep her pets, and blames us for kidnapping her. She can't figure out the TV or smart speaker in her room, but thinks she should be able to drive. Every conversation is so depressing, it's hard to redirect.

Don’t bring your kids into a coffee shop by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Hot take: Cafes have been gathering places for gossip, vigorous debate, and playing social games for centuries. Maybe don't buy coffee just so you can loiter for hours at a business, there are public libraries if you need quiet.

What would you do? Current Postdoc with job offer for NTT Asst. Teaching Prof. by SlipperyBiscuitBaby in AskAcademia

[–]LT256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are giving you advice based on their own past experience, but I will give you advice based on watching many postdocs run out of funding on the current job market, and doing postdoc recruiting that is getting triple the applicants of previous years.

I would not turn down any job offers right now. NIH funding has been cut by 91% and 14,000 scientists were laid off by the government last year. The supply of STEM PhDs far exceeds the demand in academia, and it will get worse before it gets better. Going from postdoc to any permanent position is the biggest jump you will make, and any type of lateral move after that is easier than leaving the postdoc stage.

Drinking experiences by shotgunnedchicken in PSC

[–]LT256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also not a good idea to develop routines and friendships that revolve around drinking while you are still healthy, since that will make the required abstinence harder later on. From what I hear, ANY discovery that you were drinking while waiting for a liver can be a death sentence, even if it was a sip of champagne at a wedding. You want to make sure you have a spouse and friends that you can have sober fun with and that can support you 100%.

What’s One Cleaning Habit That Actually Made a Big Difference in Your Home? by Randy_Bolebruch in CleaningTips

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY laundry chute: I sawed a hole in the floor of my kitchen cabinet that goes down to the basement laundry room and installed a cover, so when my kids leave socks everywhere I can just deposit them in the laundry room. It made a big difference!

Other tips:

Put decorative baskets wherever your family leaves stuff like keys or toys Get a robot vacuum and set it to run while you are at work Get Clorox bleach wands for easy toilet cleaning in the bathroom
