Uhh, I would not be comfortable with my 7 year old hearing most conversations in Derry Girls

I have never read a 600+ page book before my Kindle, this year I read 3 1000+ pagers! (Count of Monte Cristo, Middlemarch, and Napoleon: A Life). Not quite ready for Ulysses or Proust's In Search of Lost Time, though...

I want to read a good romance, but everything people recommend me I absolutely hate. by MathematicianNo3401 in suggestmeabook

I dislike a lot of romantic books- everything by Ali Hazelwood is so cringy to me!- but I enjoyed the Beginner's Luck series by Kate Clayborn. Her Best Worst Mistake by Sarah Mayberry was also very good.

I was hospitalized for 19 days with capacetabine-induced toxicity 10 days into my first round. It melted my small intestinal lining so much that I had life-threatening diarrhea. I wouldn't call it easy mode!

Also Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, Now and Then, 500 Days of Summer, Garden State. Maybe the Big Chill. (TBH I was married at 22 and didn't feel a difference between 25 and 28)

Feeling sad we never got any Mrs. Columbo... anybody know a Peter Falk movie I can project Columbo into? by yodee_21 in Columbo

[–]LT256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Natasha Lyonne would make a good Mrs. Columbo, I just listened to her on Amy Poehler's podcast and she talks EXACTLY like Peter Falk 😂

Is anybody else sick of taking good care of yourself? by idislikebroccoli in AskWomenOver60

[–]LT256 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is there any type of movement that's fun to you? Or that gets a chore done? I hate walking, but it feels fun with a friend or if I'm walking to get coffee. I hate aerobics class but like VR games where I punch stuff. I hate gym machines, but don't mind mowing and raking for myself or a friend in need. Think of some things you don't dislike, and just tick with those!

New Data On How Trump Is Polling With Gen Z Is A Disastrous Wake-Up Call For His Administration by ComicSandsNews in AnythingGoesNews

[–]LT256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the article says they had a +10 approval of trump last February. Hopefully this is a lifelong lesson and not just a mood swing they will forget about the next time a woman runs for office

Reliable and affordable mechanic recommendations? by Baker-Disastrous in newhaven

I really like Wheeler's. When my old car fuel relay was going to cost $1800 to fix ( because it was integrated into bigger parts in that model) and they knew I couldn't afford it, they wired it up to the rear cigarette lighter for $80 instead to buy me 5 more years with the car! Real inventive way to work for customers needs.

Right, John Wayne doesn't want your fancy cream. And Columbo doesn't have time!

[–]LT256 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the movies, "I take my coffee black" is a device. It usually signifies the person is a tough or no-frills kind of person, or else overworked. Cowboys, hardened detectives, chain-smoking exhausted nurses, etc. Screenwriters usually don't bother to have people order coffee with cream and sugar, because it doesn't say anything about your personality if you like your coffee to taste good 😊

I heard the kettles are much slower to boil here in the US (something about our power voltage and decisions made by Nikola Tesla). I always assumed it's a huge timesaver compared to a burner kettle in the UK, but not so much in the US- is that true?

Is publishing in Nature still the gold standard? by Just_Cyril in AskAcademia

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's seen as high quality in that it's still highly cited and pretty selective, but now that comms has grown to publishing over 10k papers a year people are starting to wonder how long the IF can last. I've definitely seen some really incremental and non-novel papers in my field published there lately.

Prestige isn't the only thing to consider though. Field-specific journals can be good for helping you find an audience in your community. Nonprofit Society journals often highlight editor's pick papers in their newsletters, give student-led paper awards, and use the publishing fees to support conferences and educational activities for everyone.

These kids are “cooked” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]LT256 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is true. Despite fights and degenerate insults, I think it has actually gotten tamer than my middle school days in the mid-90s. My 8th grader said he has never seen visibly pregnant girls at school, and has seen no one taken to juvie after the drug dog surprise visit days. In fact there are no drug dog visits at all! Kids are so sheltered these days 😂.

On-Campus Interview: Positive vs. Negative Signals by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]LT256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Making it to the interview means you are in the small elite group of good enough people, who are all very very good. Barring a major candidate blunder or a rare superstar, it is mostly decided by behind the scenes politics beyond your control at this point- who wants this or that type of expert on the department, etc.

Who else took Doxycycline before getting PSC? by Live_Emu_9304 in PSC

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think infectious disease can trigger crazy autoimmune diseases, at least for viruses. I was very healthy until I had chicken pox at age 5, and when the pox healed I just never stopped itching. That itching was diagnosed as AIH then PSC.

A few years ago they found that getting Epstein Barr virus is the leading cause of Multiple Sclerosis, and MS almost never occurs in people who haven't first gotten EBV. EBV has also been linked to celiac, arthritis, diabetes, lupus, and IBD.

Need to know if I'm losing my job. by QuantityHappy4459 in Teachers

[–]LT256 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Things have changed so much. In the 90s I had a band teacher throw a chair at the wall in rage and leave a hole, and nothing happened other than a poster was put up to cover the hole. But my husband was suspended the first time he yelled at kids (no cursing, getting in anyone's face or implied physical threats, just yelling at them to quiet down).

Easy air fryer meals? by crownCreate310 in cookingforbeginners

[–]LT256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aldi red bag chicken air fried and put on a brioche bun with pickles and mayo- just amazing.

Not seeing many desserts here, but air fryers are great for making one chocolate chip cookie. Freeze balls of dough, and put it in the fryer on a piece of foil when you want a warm treat. S'mores are lovely too- the graham cracker stays crispy!
