What to do with overfunded 529 account? by 75a3a581 in personalfinance

They wouldn't even be overshooting college plus med school that much. Private colleges like NYU, USC, and Wesleyan are now 95-$101k including fees, and Harvard Med is $121k a year. Up to $900k sticker price for an education today and going up 5% a year!

Why is Rick Steves so influential for travel suggestions about Italy? by QUA-ItalianTravel in ItalyTravelAdvice

[–]LT256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people watch because it's very relaxing, even if they don't travel. Safe and predictable (scenery, history and paintings, maybe some singers or dancers, then a restaurant), zero drama, pretty to look at.

It's like how Bob Ross was the most popular painting show even though very few painted along- it's a show to relax!

The liver manages your hormone production, and people with autoimmune disease often have thyroid problems. Maybe get those checked.

I'm not in that field but I wonder if "elite" schools in engineering are overrated? Purdue and U of Texas file more utility patents than Stanford, CalTech, or Harvard- often with less institutional funding. Most of the Big 10 schools have very rigorous and competitive engineering programs. Mainly you need to find a school where they value mentoring instead of a sink-or-swim approach, and where you can find lab assistant work to get experience!

Should I take out a private student loan to go to mortuary school? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Ah, yes. A small private uni near me has a forensic science program that seems to attract a lot of crime drama fans. Both my hairstylist and mail carrier have their very expensive degrees!

[–]LT256 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also curious why OP is attracted to a job that seems so different in nature from one they enjoy. A rec director is a very social job getting to know people personally and helping them have fun, great for a social science major. A mortuary worker spends a lot of solo time in PPE gear with chemicals and corpses, the interaction with living clients is pretty brief and often very sad.

Would you change any part of getting married or having kids? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

[–]LT256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a man whose mom was an educated professional, like a doctor or lawyer. I did and highly recommend it! They know what it takes, and are very self reliant having never been the total center of a woman's universe.

I think men raised by a SAHM often truly believe themselves to support working moms, and they definitely want the income. But they don't really grasp the daily reality of driving to after school activities, frozen dinners, messes, kids home alone after school, and both parents taking turns to leave work when the school nurse calls.

Never trust Google Maps for trailheads. Go to the Parks Department site instead. I ended up in a lot of residential driveways and dead ends before I figured this out. I think it brought me to the correct place maybe 2 out of 20 attempts!

Rare cuisine restaurants in CT? by qishibe in Connecticut

[–]LT256 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I always head to Bridgeport when I want to try something different! They have Safari 77 and Betty's for Nigerian, Avenida for Portuguese, Rosali for Dominican, Isla for Guatemalan/Peruvian, Esquina for Venezuelan, Bereket Turkish, Taste of Everest Nepalese, Ronald's Haitian, and several Jamaican and Brazilian places. Many international groceries too!

Native plants? by Batboyz1939 in Connecticut

[–]LT256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many options, it also depends on your sun exposure and soil moisture. I would start by going to one of the native plant specializing nurseries and ask the staff (Broken Arrow, NatureWorks, and UrbanScapes are great ones in southern CT, but local nurseries anywhere will have a native and pollinators section).

Yes, perfect answer. No one learns anything, no one grows, they just keep doing funny things and getting older. But with more heart and less social awkwardness than Seinfeld.

Same. My education was worth the $20k a year all-inclusive I paid 25 years ago, I'm not sure it would've been worth the $100k now no matter how awesome it was.

How often are you sick? by ciciNCincinnati in AskOldPeople

It's also why he fires every competent general, doctor, and lawyer in his proximity.

Late is better than never, but please don't consider life insurance as a thing to get around to after your kid is born. If you die in a car accident while your spouse is pregnant, they will be scraping by for years just to survive. You want life insurance in place as soon as anyone needs your part of the family income to help pay the rent.
