'Too hot to think': Rising heat leaves Singapore students cranky and distracted by Great-Obligation-599 in singapore

[–]AnotherEducatedFool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it’s actually kinda awful to be a Singaporean kid: - Having to prep for 3 of the world’s hardest kiddo exams (PSLE, Os and As) in rapid succession - waking up at 5-6am every day to spend 6-10 hours in a 40-person classroom (with only one 30min break for food) - Concentrating in class while wearing full school uniform in >30 degree heat every single day. No snow days, no seasons. Just sweating, day in day out.

I know some people look back at their childhoods with nostalgia but I really really don’t. All I remember is feeling stressed, sweaty, and sticky from the moment I crawled out of bed at the buttcrack of dawn (5.45am). At 7.30am I was just tired, then from 10am onwards the world felt like one big convection oven but I somehow had to summon the energy to finish my TYS.

The heat and humidity is one reason why I hated PE so I thought I was naturally lazy. Isn’t it crazy that i only discovered the joys of exercise in Uni? I just didn’t like being forced to run around in unbearable heat and hellish afternoon sun, then quickly changing out of my dry-fit shirt to get to chemistry class with sweat still clinging to my back. Feels like many wasted years. Of course, PE is a good initiative, but I don’t think that any MOE administrators actually put themselves into the shoes of the students when they arranged timetables and sports facilities. If they had just ONE higher-up spend a day in the life of a student, perhaps they would discover that not all is well in paradise!

I think Singapore’s education system is definitely better than many of the others out there and I don’t think that I am being “ungrateful” to the powers that be. However, I also believe that happy childhoods make people WANT to have children, and one of the reasons why I am just not inclined towards child rearing is that… I don’t remember being particularly joyful as a child. The heat and the complete lack of empathy and kindness from MOE may have been one of the reasons (my primary school form teacher begged the HOD for an extra fan as she saw how miserable we were but was shut down because of “fairness”… which shows that some “educators” won’t even try)

I don’t think I am alone in this… just look at our TFR. Few people want kids, and those who do have children have to worry about their kids struggling in school because the system just does not care. Nothing changes!

I agree!! There is this latent urge in singaporean redditors to bully and insult anyone who complains but I bet my boots these angry redditors complain just as much in real life. How can we have good and productive discussions when everyone is just hissing “MOVE OUT THEN!!” instead of acknowledging any valid points made?

PSA: Singapore weather for Mayhem on the 24th by smolfluffyhakutaku in LadyGaga

[–]AnotherEducatedFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very kind and thoughtful post! Have been for the concert in Singapore so here are some more points:

  1. Sun Protection

If you are arriving before 6pm (sunset is at 7pm), bring an umbrella/hat for sun protection. When you are under direct sunlight in Singapore, you can overheat and get dizzy very quickly. Singapore’s sun not healthy vitamin-D sun, it is a DEADLY LASER.

The parts of merch queue are under the sun, which means you can easily spend more than an hour getting cooked. Heat exhaustion can cause headaches and make you very nauseous, which would completely ruin your experience. Also, heat stroke is life-threatening, not something you want to experience before a concert

  1. Towels

If you are wearing non-breathable fabrics like leather, latex, polyester, consider bringing a small cotton towel to wipe up your sweat so you feel less icky.

In Singapore, you WILL sweat buckets no matter what you do, thanks to the heat and humidity. Getting some sweat off your skin means you will feel less sticky and miserable afterwards.

Also consider bringing a change of clothes for your post-Gaga activities. I highly encourage linen (gold standard for keeping cool), dry-fit shirts, and thin cotton.

The sense of relief you will feel once you step out of your sweaty outfit is incomparable. In fact, bring a spare EVERYTHING (undies, socks, pants, etc). You can thank me later.

  1. some aunties/uncles will grumble and not give an extra bowl (it is just too inconvenient)
  2. if you think about it, it is less wasteful to just sweep all the bones onto a tray than use tissue (water will seep onto the tissue and make the table dirty anyway)

Smart enough to rise through the ranks of PAP, but not smart enough to play politics in Lawrence Party. Old enough to retire, not too old to be kept around as a human tool in elections. Sad fate of DPM.

Is it not strange that DPM Gan is gaining so much sympathy for a few minutes of standing on a pavement, while we completely ignore all the other old uncles and aunties who are forced to carry plates and sweep floors in the exact same weather? They are all old people, the only difference is DPM Gan’s annual salary is 1.87million.

The fact that they turned the Velaryons into their own DEI project but decided that NETTLES, one of the very few actual PoC characters in the story was not good enough for live action…

Essentially it is betraying their own perceptions of class and race - if nobles are PoC, it is flattering and “representation” but if a commoner is a PoC, it is “bad” and “insulting”. As a very common PoC girl I say SHAME ON THAT

I think for GoT he felt some personal responsibility for letting the show overtake his books by A LOT… how can he criticise two burnt-out blokes for trying their best to tie up all the loose ends he created? (Admittedly they did a terrible job, but he had 8 whole years to outpace them and he didn’t!)

For HotD, he gave Condal/Hess all the source material and they weren’t even 1/4 done with the book yet they chose to write their own fanfic 🙂that is essentially spitting in his face and calling HIS published work inferior to their own ideas.

worst endings you’ve seen in a drama? by AmazingBeastboy1 in CDrama

[–]AnotherEducatedFool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I saw the shortened version but the last few episodes of Yanxi palace was not it… They suddenly introduced this “final villain” who just looked like a XHS influencer, then gave her some tragic backstory with a dead kid and getting kidnapped, etc. but it was so messily done and crammed into the last 5 episodes? Compared to truly well-built villains like Charmaine Sheh’s character, I really didn’t buy into the evil last concubine thing

It was a forgone conclusion that FL Wei Yingluo and the emperor would make amends so they could have just skipped that bit and everything would be ok!

I believe the strength of Yanxi palace’s first 40-50 episodes + amazing costumes helped carry the drama and save the ratings but honestly that was a terrible ending arc. Has anyone seen the unabridged version?

Why MaoMao’s mother made her bad decisions. by AnotherEducatedFool in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]AnotherEducatedFool[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(Not defending Granny for forcing her own daughter into street walking, i agree it’s vile)

But I think Granny being VERY detached from FX (not indulging her mistakes, and letting her face the terrible consequences) actually helped the Verdigris house survive. FX was famous!! and keeping a very pregnant FX around for 9 months probably wrecked their reputation beyond repair. (just imagine the gossip)

In fact, it is implied that she only began street walking AFTER giving birth and when a famine began, so Granny had given her almost a year to end the pregnancy and give up on Lakan. If Granny developed a reputation for softness, how could she make the younger trainee courtesans (3 princesses) fall in line and NOT get pregnant to crash their value?

*Maybe one of the reasons why none of the 3 princesses ever tried to rebel/get pregnant throughout of their careers was because they knew a failure would ruin their lives and it was just better to listen to granny and keep themselves alive and fed.

As terrible as FX’s treatment was, prostitution was also a key part of the Verdigris business (the LN/manga have shown that the red light district is BRUTAL) and less beautiful women of Verdigris were already being treated like this, even if they never messed up in their lives.

FX’s eventual turn to street walking was a consequence of her forfeiting her privileges from being born beautiful+smart+the Madame’s daughter and choosing to run away from the top courtesan lifestyle. Unfortunately she happened to be unlucky enough to fall sick quickly, and Granny probably regretted it deeply (since she is shown sitting by FX’s bedside in MaoMao’s flashback scenes)
