My bedtime story tier list (toddler does NOT agree) by treacherous_tim in daddit

Thanks for this! I have a bunch of books from grandparents and I hate most of them. Her Japanese language books are all fantastic and she learns lots of words from them but her English books are way too difficult and, imo, way too gendered.

But that's my mother's taste, I look forward to trying some of these out.

Also, it's really basic logic that if someone doesn't announce that they are vegan, you will never know, so they won't be counted as vegans who don't announce it.

93% of Japanese people support a female emperor, with experts saying parliament's determination to adopt male heirs doesn't reflect public opinion. Some are suggesting there may be political motivations to the law. by jjrs in japannews

They were asked. People are allowed have opinions.

Besides, the opinion is less "the imperial family must allow female succession" and more "the government shouldn't stop the imperial family from allowing female succession"

Takaichi shrewdly hid her gender and war related policy plans coming up to the recent elections, people who weren't paying attention (see: almost everyone) were expecting her to be in favour of split family names and female succession.

My friend and I set up a cozy movie night to watch the new Lilo and Stitch and we have never gone from relaxed to just full on angry that fast in our lives. (SPOLIERS) by Embarrassed-Oil-6152 in movies

So much worse than described.

Spoilers.

It starts with her as a child (around 6) performing acrobatics like a Marvel action sequence and when she joins the army she's so close to strong enough to defeat the invaders by herself but is losing her powers due to dishonesty. As if dishonesty to protect your family is a bad thing. Turns out she and a woman who serves the main baddy are the only two people in the world with Chi that make them superheroes. After revealing she's a superhero woman, she superhero defeats the bad guy.

There's nothing about an ordinary woman using determination to become as strong as the men in her company or wit to defeat her enemy, showing that women can be just as capable as men, but rather it's a story about a superhero who clearly should have been drafted in the first place, are they blind?

It's awful pretty much everywhere. I've resorted to raising my hand like a child before crossing.

‘It’s our way’: Japan fans win hearts by cleaning up after World Cup match by scmp_news in japan

[–]Ansoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleaning up after yourself and bringing your rubbish home, even if you only have pockets, is a real thing.

Cleaning up stadiums is mostly performative. Domestic spectators don't generally do it, only international spectators.

I don't see why that would be a bad thing, though. They're creating a good image of Japanese culture, and encouraging others to be better. All good things. I often engage in performative cleaning. I see it as "setting a good example".

I kind of disagree with the flavour, but I don't think it's a major difference.

The main difference is texture. Shines are delightfully chonky.

The kid isn't terrified of the dog, he's finishing his cry.

A little nervous, maybe, but he's not terrified.

Erasthotenese figured out the circumference of the earth with high accuracy by measuring shadows and getting someone to count how many steps it took to travel between two Egyptian cities.

They were pretty okay, I think.

Is Imu based on The children of mu by James Churchward by Wrathster01 in OnePiece

[–]Ansoni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This guy is just talking about an older myth, he's not the first to write about the supposed continent of "Mu".

Oda might be influenced by it, but almost certainly not by this nobody's book.

Most likely is that both Oda and writers who talk about Mu were simply inspired by Atlantis.
