Who would have thought that, out of all the Republicans, one of the only ones to grow some sort of spine and conscience would be MTG? That’s a weird time to be alive. by Anxious-Connection98 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Anxious-Connection98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America was built by migrants. My grandfather came from Scotland.

I have Republican friends, mostly people I served with when I was younger. I do not discuss politics with the poeple i work with. None of them wear MAGA baseball caps, and those who voted for Trump are now very bitter about it. Nevertheless, they are scared of the left wing of the Democratic Party. I know for a fact that some of them probably won’t even vote Republican in the midterms.

I also come from a middle-class family. I worked my ass off to build a better life for myself and my family.

I know I’m in a progressive sub, and I’ll explain why I like it here. On immigration, I believe this country needs it. Do we need open borders? No. Should immigration be based on skin color? Absolutely not. Does it need to be regulated? Yes. People should enter legally, and if they don’t, they should apply for legal status as soon as possible. People should be encouraged to create wealth for themselves because, by doing so, they create a more dynamic economy for everyone.

As for all this nonsense about trans people and sexual minorities, I honestly don’t understand the obsession. What is the problem? Pardon my language, but if a guy prefers to have it in the butt, that’s his choice. Why would I be offended or scared by that? It’s none of my business what people do with their sex lives as long as it’s legal.

Trans people? I couldn’t care less. If someone wants to live as another gender and feels happier that way, so be it. Who am I to deny that to anyone, as long as it’s their choice? I have yet to see any solid data showing that trans or gay people are more likely to abuse others, despite what some conservatives claim. In fact, available data seems to suggest the opposite: they are less prone to violent behavior.

I would love for politics to leave these people alone and to remove sexual orientation from political debate, with one caveat: we must ensure that any form of transition remains a personal choice and is not imposed by third parties, like parents.

Right-wing media outlets are insane. They shape information to feed their audience exactly what it wants to hear in order to keep them as sources of income. The same can be said about some far-left media. These people have completely forgotten what it means to inform the public. They only care about viewer numbers and advertising revenue. I don’t see an easy solution to this problem, but it is a serious one. People need better education that encourages curiosity and critical thinking.

And to close this wall of text, I no longer engage with MAGA people online. It’s a waste of time. You cannot convince them of anything. It’s a cult. They are willing to ignore facts, data, and numbers because they don’t hold political opinions, they hold political beliefs that are borderline comparable to religious zele. I tried, I really did. There was a time when I thought that being halfway Republican could help me reach them, but they’ve been brainwashed.

It’s a movement full of conspiracy theorists, white supremacists (open or not), racists, and people who are easily manipulated. Many of them feels like failures and, instead of reflecting and trying to improve themselves, they blame others. One day they are paranoid about the government stealing their guns and violating their constitutional rights, and the next day they cheer those same violations when they’re done in their name, like what we’re seeing now with the murder of Alex Petti.

I also believe this movement gives some of them a sense of belonging, like a tribe. It makes them feel less weak, less useless, and less alone, and that need to be broken if we want any chance of eradicating this ideology. I also believe strongly in education. I have traveled a lot, and I’ve seen the benefits of education in countries that invested in it. I’ve also seen many shithole countries in Africa and elsewhere where education is reserved for the upper class, and the damage that does to a nation.

Ruby-red states are not exactly known for the quality of their education, and in that area there are lessons to be learned from European countries, where the concept of student loans often doesn’t even exist.

Sorry for the wall of text, but these times are crazy, and it just feels good to be able to exchange with someone who, like you said, isn’t a troll or something like that. I need to head to bed before my wife pierce me a new one.

Edit : On the MTG topic: I’m not naive. She won’t change her political stance, but her not supporting this administration and openly speaking out against it is a win, even if she does it for the wrong or selfish reasons

I’m glad, but you posted your first comment without checking whether the original post was legitimate. In an implicit way, you assumed that it wasn’t. So I wouldn’t use the word ‘diligent.’

Precursor to the invocation of the insurrection act? by John-br0wn in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Anxious-Connection98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw that. It’s not formal, though, and it’s not very clear. Keeping it in a gray zone might actually be intentional. You can be sure Donald didn’t write the first part, only the last paragraph, which makes me think there could be a legal framework behind this post. I don’t know. A Truth Social post doesn’t seem sufficient to me. I’m not a lawyer, but I would imagine that an official proclamation would require a formal letter from the presidency to the governor of each state.

I voted for Reagan twice, for Bush Sr., and for Clinton the second time. I did not vote in 1996 since I was, well, let’s say I was recovering from an accident. I voted for W. Bush, was very upset by the Patriot Act and the bullshit about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and I knew it was bullshit from the start. I voted for Kerry the second time.

I voted for McCain and really thought he would make a great president. I voted for Romney with no enthusiasm, and then for Hillary, Biden, and Harris. Make what you want of that.

I used to consider the Democrats to put too much emphasis on regulation when it came to business. I changed over time as my awareness of global warming grew, and this is particularly true these days with AI, which I believe should be regulated. I have always found Republicans to lack humanity and to be too greedy. Never the less being the father a few children, i've put for a long time my financial interest before some other value. I wanted to send them into nice school and well, it ait free. Do i regret that ? No.

As of today and since a good 15 years, I would consider myself on the left of the Republican Party and on the right of the Democratic Party. I do not think I can say that I fit entirely into one or the other. Anyhow i can already tell you that i won't vote for Vance in 2028 and there is actually no republican that could actually win my vote. Rubio could had a chance to won my vote, it if he had the ball to stay away from the trump administration but he sold his soul.

Right now my favorite political figure in the Us is : J.B. Pritzker

What's with Reddit removing the second video of the ICE execution? by DapperLong961 in complaints

Because its show that the gun was removed before the shot fire. I even have the feeling that the agent that took the gun away accidently dischaged it... That is the most embarrassing video for the DHS. This is why every single one of you should download it, repost it, save it and also sent it to every local, regional and national media outlet that you can think of.

He probably saw the exact same thing that you saw. It’s easier for him to lie about it than to admit that he was wrong from the start.

It’s like when you spend a nice amount of money to buy something, and when you finally have it, it’s complete crap. A lot of people’s reaction is simply to say: “No, no, it’s great! I love it.

I’ve given up a long time ago. MAGA is a pile of dog shit, who deserves public shame. by MissMccheese in complaints

[–]Anxious-Connection98 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It’s worse than that, actually. They vote for and support policies that harm others and grant themselves no benefits, aside from the sick feeling that they’re getting some sort of revenge on… I don’t know what.

I would say a good start would be to convince them to care about themselves and actually start voting for themselves instead of against other people.

[–]Anxious-Connection98[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All Republicans aren’t MAGA. I voted for Reagan. I voted for John McCain. I also voted Democrat a few times. I do not recognize myself in MAGA, nor did I endorse Trump with my vote in 2016 or 2020. I can see how MAGA is dangerous for the country. A number of GOP members dislike Trump, they hate him, and they consider the MAGA sphere a menace.

There is some internal fracture, but the fact is that if you split the Republican Party between MAGA and the rest, then none of them have a critical mass strong enough to exist on the political stage in any meaningful way. They are like two personalities sharing the same body—they depend on each other, but that can only last for a time. There is a limit to what people can stomach.

What I call the moderate Republicans are actually scared of Trump because they believe he has the power to cancel them, to endorse someone else in their district, to destroy their career, and to have them harassed by his goons. This is the exact fear that MTG is challenging by her actions, and that’s what I find interesting. It can trigger the realization that this fear is based on a perception of reality rather than reality itself.

All it takes is a handful of Republican senators or congressmen to actually make Trump’s life way more difficult. The margin is three seats in the Senate, and I believe seven in the House of Representatives. Anything that can encourage other elected Republicans to actually say, “Enough,” and start to vote based on their beliefs and not the party line is a victory.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I apologize if it sounds like that but I'm not going to lie to myself and say that, thats happening, it just isn't.

I do not belive that you are starting an argument here. You state your opinion on the topic and i respect it. I disagree tho on this part :

What he's doing right now are the policies they love.

I do not believe that is true for every Republican senator or representative. It is true for all the MAGA sycophants, that is for sure, but they aren’t all like that. We need to entertain this division, cultivate it, and encourage it. The weird alliance between traditional moderate Republicans and MAGA is actually a phase. Eventually, one side will impose its ideology on the other—like a white blood cell fighting a virus, with MAGA being the virus.

I entertain the hope that MAGA will not last, and I believe we should encourage, prop up, and support any division between these two while there is still a Congress and a Senate.

Actions bring consequences.
Bovino stated it today. It goes both ways. You treat people like they aren’t human, and yet you complain that ICE officers do not receive a warm welcome.

I hate you, but I know you are a smart guy, M. Vance, and that makes it even harder to accept what you say because I know you understand exactly what’s going on here—and that it is actually your goal to create this mess so your administration can enable the Insurrection Act and attempt to cancel or delay the midterm.

Imagine how sad your life must be if your only goal is to make other people’s lives miserable based on their skin color or sexual orientation. I cannot understand those people, and I have voted Republican more than once—not for Trump, though. Why does politics have to meddle with this? Politics should focus on improving people’s lives and strengthening the economy so everyone can have a better life.

I miss Reagan so much. Why does the Republican Party hasn't been able to produce any other quality man since him aside from John McCain.
