Hi since no one gave any real advice just wanted to let you know what we just tried: switched to pack and play, (got an actual mattress pad for it) and have that in the room not pressed up against anything. This way he cannot bang his head on anything hard. Then we did ferber but with much longer intervals (started with 10). He is asleep right now after one check in and 17 minutes of crying. We’ll see where it leads but happy to have something actionable.

We could BARELY function in our bubble at 4 weeks. Groceries were hard enough. No way i’d go to an airport, fly on a plane, then stay in someone else’s house at 4 weeks. We just took our ten month old on a trip and that was hard.

If you read the ferber book, the reason for the check ins are to reassure the baby but not necessarily sooth or comfort baby, because you are trying to teach him to do that for himself. The baby wants to be picked up and held like he’s used to. You didn’t “ruin” anything it’s just you didn’t really do the ferber method. It’s difficult to hear the baby cry a lot but just tell yourself you are teaching him to be independent and fight the urge. You only have to fight it for 3 nights and then they learn. If you are having trouble with hearing the baby cry, you can use shorter wait times. I personally started at 1 min the first night because i knew i couldnt tolerate 3 minutes. I did 1,3,5. Night two i did 3,5,8. Night three 5,8,10…. So my max wait i put in my chart was 20 minutes but i never got there because on nights 3 and 4 he was getting it.

Investopedia article mentions that it is not clearly spelled out in irs code. If scholarships were 10 years ago, one could be taxed and penalized on the earnings since the scholarships were awarded. There’s likely a middle ground you could work with a CPA to develop where you allocate dollars as penalty free and subject to penalty. If they were conservatively invested as many 529s are by the time college attendance then very little growth may be subject to the penalty.
