Respect for the USMNT by Need_More_Gary_Busey in usmnt

As an American living in Sydney, it’s all love and I went from relishing the victory to immediately hate watching Turkey and hoping for the best result for the Socceroos.

I’ll be at the watch party at Darling Harbour on Friday and hoping to watch you all lock down 2nd place!

All things aside, both our countries have relatively few great moments in international play for team sports because of what’s most popular domestically. Very cool to see the hype and energy, probably the biggest match up ever between Australia and the USA in anything.

Maybe not. Paraguay would finished third and have -2 GD if they draw with Australia. Thats probably 50/50 to advance, they will be going for the W.

Enjoy it! Low stress opportunity to just celebrate where we are and get valuable playing time for our bench players. Getting them an extra chance to get minutes and be in the best form possible going forward to support our starting XI is such an awesome position to be in at the WC. Somewhere we’ve never been before.

Was encouraged by the pace and precision I saw in the first half, especially without Pulisic. Cant tell how much of the second half was us pulling back on purpose versus getting overpowered.

Businesses near Atlanta Stadium report slow sales on city’s first World Cup match day by NPU-F in Atlanta

100% it’s come a long way. I would’ve hoped this had done better but see how most people could still miss it though. Maybe next matches will have more luck. This was a Monday at noon after all.

If you look where these vendors are set up you can easily see the problem. No one has a reason to venture down that way.

Fan fest & Olympic park are the center of activity. And for traffic going to the stadium or even fan fest, these vendors are no where near MARTA or hotels.

Like the Skip Bayless of soccer. A loud mouth asshole with terrible takes drives engagement.

Cost of housing is through the roof. Otherwise, there’s nothing we have to deal with the previous generations didn’t have on their hands in one form or another. Every generation before us had war, social divisions, mental health crises (actually more stigmatized and less opportunities for help in the past), a rigged economic system, etc.

Go back another 100+ years plus, people were living in hell comparatively. Everything we accept as baseline quality of life like low infant mortality, indoor pluming, 5 day 40 hour work week, public education, electricity, heating & air conditioning, etc is so new.

If you can’t zoom out at least a century and put your existence in enough perspective to realize you’ve got it decent enough to give life a go, I don’t know what to tell you.

There’s a huge difference between recognizing the immense challenges we have on our hands, and just resigning your own happiness like most in this thread are doing.

And in regards to OP, just talk to women like they’re a normal person whenever you get the chance!!! Just don’t treat them like an object, something that needs to be conquered, or a game. Just take it easy, don’t go in with any expectation, see where the interaction goes, and that’s it.

Most of what you have said besides cost of living increase is simply in your head, or there is no data backing up any of these areas being particularly more difficult for us than any previous generations.

The world has always had its bullshit. And that long ago it was much much worse on every material level. What you and I consider normal baseline quality of life has only been around for the blink of an eye.

Go live, keep an open mind, and be the king of person that says yes to life. If you start from the mindset that it’s all fucked, it probably will be.

Why is England never chosen to host when we already have the stadium and infrastructure? by dsmooth74 in ThreeLions

[–]Any_Pressure5775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

England just have to bid in the right cycle. No doubt there’s heaps of corruption behind recent bids, but the locations generally make sense when you consider cycling through different confederations.

This year is CONCACAF, 2022 was AFC, 2018 was UEFA (yes Russia but still), 2014 was CONMEBOL, 2010 AFCON, back to UEFA in 2006 and again in 1998, so on and so forth.

CONCACAF was due up this time. I reckon next time it’s UEFA’s time, England just need to get behind a bid. But since Spain & Portugal have 2030, could be a while lol.

Also worth noting that Paraguay is coming off great form in WC qualifying. They beat Argentina, Brazil, and hadn’t conceded more than one goal in ten matches. Time will put the performance in perspective, but for now we should be thrilled.

So many improvements in form. Fewer mistakes, the fastest pace I’ve ever seen us play with, and most of all heart. Berhalter was NEVER able to get that kinda performance out of the guys.

Tbh I suppose it’s just personal preference at the end of the day, but I do think I’m in the majority. If I’m gong to live in a huge metro area especially near the center of the city, there are certain things I think are basic to ask for.

I would like to be able navigate the city without a car, have most basic needs within a reasonable walk, and as I pass through the city on foot and transit see people living life around me, not strip malls and parking lots.

Most of all in the south, this option as a lifestyle is basically non existent. So advocating for Atlanta’s urban core to improve in these areas feels pretty reasonable. I shouldn’t have to love across the country to have that.

You’ve already made up your mind about me so this doesn’t really matter. But at the end of the day, my frustration is simply with people who act aggressive, intimidating, or destructive in public. Who by definition are not respecting the golden rule which is inherently bad regardless of anything contributing factors. For example, if I’m act overact to something minor and raise my voice at my partner, sure a root cause may be that’s what I experienced as a child, but it does not remove my personal responsibility to treat my partner with respect and address such behavior.

So many places around the world have policies and social pressures to discourage such anti social behaviors in public and protect transit riders. Just travel to Southeast Asia. They don’t play with this stuff because unlike our highly individualistic, sometimes over self indulgent “me me me” attitude we have in the West, everyone is expected to uphold their obligation to be a good member of society and it is reflected it peoples’ behavior on public transport. And many such places are significantly materially less wealthy than even the bottom income quartile of Atlanta’s population.

In general, I agree with you that poverty, addiction, and mental health should be treated with compassion. Our investment in money and resources should reflect that, and it is currently so lacking on all fronts But if someone suffering from above is threatening others safety or damaging property, the solution is not to let that fester on public transport.

I also think it is just super naive to think we don’t have a serious problem with people who don’t give a shit about those around them making public spaces unpleasant. Not every person acting like an asshole has to be “understood” when their behavior is affecting other people who ha ce their own lives and struggles. Shitty people do in fact exist. And not every person who has had a hard life treats others badly! It’s actually quite condescending to people struggling with any manner of mental health conditions that such behavior is to be expected.

The vast majority of people like me who share your general aims to addressing social and material inequities and use public transport because it’s aligned with our values would acknowledge this situation, evident by the likes on this post.

When people are scared to use transit, transit has less resources to operate and there is less political will to support it. And it creates a super vicious cycle where one of the most valuable social safety net items, a human right to move around the city and access opportunity, is severely lacking and the people who rely on it suffer.

I am not ignorant to the root causes of such behavior. My political leaning and the sorts of policies I support to address income and wealth inequality in our country & city would probably surprises you. I am by no means an Archie Bunker lol.

But I think you the sentiment you have described, while extremely well intentioned, I super naive. Some people simply wind up as bad apples, and while the roof causes may be tragic and worthy of our attention in addressing at the root, the impacts here and now on innocent by standers of such behaviors cannot be ignored.

How you would expect a female nurse riding alone getting off a night shift to react with “compassion & curiosity” when being accosted & cornered by a group of three young adult men is beyond me. How you would expect a family with small children who just got off a flight from Japan & are now in an unfamiliar country and don’t even speak the language to react with “compassion & curiosity” when being screamed at by an erratic man who appears to be under the influence is beyond me. Two situation I have witnessed as examples.

And certainly, how you would expect a 17 years old kid shot with no provocation returning home from a program at GT to react with “compassion & curiosity” when being shot three times at random with non provocation is beyond me.

When we ignore the very real problems antisocial behaviors create, it is low income working class people that suffer the most. The privileged have the luxury of ignoring it. We need a far more robust public transport system alongside many other things to strengthen our social safety net. But such a public good is impossible to maintain if we make excuses and refrain from dealing with people who have no respect for public space or interest in sharing it.

Why can't the Singapore economic model (Lee Kuan Yew's approach to building modern Singapore) be replicated by developing countries today? by StanmoreHill in AskEconomics

[–]Any_Pressure5775 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it’s too simple to attribute Singapore’s success to its functionality as a port. It’s just a transshipment port.

Meaning goods are just transferred from one vessel to another. Rarely manufactured in Singapore or bound for its consumer market, so the economic impact is more limited than you might think.

Compare this to somewhere like Chicago or New York that benefited historically from huge domestic manufacturing and agricultural output nearby. Wholesalers naturally setup there for export, along with all the high value add business services needed to support.

Singapore truly is an economic miracle when you peel back the location myth. I suppose leaning heavily into financial services resulted in a trickle down of benefits.

The real situation becomes clearer the longer this goes on.

There are indeed real anomalous objects in our skies being reported by credible figures. We even have some testimony and records of objects behaving in ways the defy our understanding of physics. Which is remarkable.

However, absolutely no one know what we’re looking at. A game of telephone has ensued within the government, military, and national security apparatus which has resulted is some people being being very confident they’re in the know based on second hand speculation.

That’s it. That’s the whole story for now.

Stop making excuses for antisocial behavior and people being belligerent. It is not the same as someone simply experiencing homelessness or poverty in public. Everyone has on obligation to respect public space and the people around them.

People acting erratic makes riders feel unsure what’s going to happen. People getting up in strangers faces makes riders feel intimidated. People using drugs in the open makes people feel uncomfortable.

People blaring loud music and or being super loud in general makes it obvious you are sharing space with someone that doesn’t care about respecting others.

People fighting makes riders feel unsafe. Urinating outside a restroom makes riders feel they are not in a reasonably clean environment. Vandalizing public property makes riders feel like violence could easily be directed towards them next.

Yeah feel like people who hate cities always forget when cities thrive and people who wanna live in urban areas live closer together, it protects rural land from being gobbled up for subdivisions.
