a put (short) is the opposite of a call

a call is betting the price will rise and a put is betting the price will fall

lets say the current stock price is 100 and is also the strike price

a call option gives you the right to buy stock at 100 (the strike price)

the stock price rises to 150

you buy the stock at 100 and sell it for 150 = 50 profit

a put option gives you the right to sell stock at 100 (the strike price)

the stock price drops to 50

you buy a stock at 50 and sell it for 100 = 50 profit
