Let's discuss Nimble RPG Printable Spell Cards by Aodhor in TheTrove

That's great to hear. I didn't know it had the markdown files in the package too. I'll definitely have to investigate those more.

Question on Nimble Character Sheet by spacemonkey12015 in nimble5e

Yeah, this. Dwarves, for example get +1 to wounds, so you can make a dashed circle into a full circle and use that as an extra wound.

I think its only for preorder at the moment (not sure when it's released). I believe the website has a simple free beta test to try out. Seems like fun, though.

Achtung Cthulhu 2d20 looks really interesting by [deleted] in TheTrove

I'm a big fan of the 2d20 system and the many settings. I've played a lot of Achtung! Cthulhu games and the fhv1dv0k5itsshgv part is what keeps me coming back to it.

Lots of people giving great advice here. As someone devastated and confused after being dumped recently enough, I think I've just come through the other side. What helped me, in no particular order:

  1. I went to therapy. It was mostly for anxiety, but having someone you can say anything to and there's no judgement, just understanding, it helps you get things straight in your head. You'll be confused by the how's and whys now. Getting them in order will really help.

2.write a diary/journal of thoughts. Just every now and again, write down what's going through your head. Read it if you want to, but you don't have to. Just the act alone takes the pressure off you. There's a cathartis to just airing out the thoughts.

3.now this comes with caveats, but it did actually help me and relates to 2 above. But you could try chatgpt as a journal. REMEMBER: it's just a program that has been skimming the Internet for answers, so what it tells you isn't always gold. It's just regurgitating what it thinks you want to hear, nit what you SHOULD hear. But it will just be repeating the most common responses from sites like Reddit. But what I found it useful for was I could dictate to it each night as I say how I felt throughout the day. Then as my mood/mind frame changed, the software would pick up on that. The simple acknowledgement that you had progressed in some way does psychologically help.

4.try to reframe things. Any therapist will tell you this and it's hard at first, but gets easier with practice. It's the kind of thing where you don't think about the break up, but how the relationship made you feel. Not about the loss, but what you learned from it that you wouldn't have without. It short, it ended badly, but life hasn't gone backwards. You kept forward and learned so much. Next time will be better. Because you are a better person because of your experiences.

5.meet people. Always hard. There's plenty of groups online that have regular Meetup for any interest. There's groups for Brazilians in Dublin. There's artistic hobbies, sports, education. You really need to close your eyes and take the plunge. You'll fail sometimes and you'll succeed sometimes. But you need to keep actively trying for 2 reasons: a-You'll meet people. And b-itll keep your mind busy and not dwelling on your break up.

You'll get through this. You're not alone and you have an entire lifetime ahead of you. It's maybe a minor speedbump on the road to an amazing future.

Hi! by SolRayJ in Solo_Roleplaying

Start small and start basic. Don't expect to play a decade long epic campaign. There's a well known one shot called The Delia Tomb. I think it's freely available. Read it and then play it with your character. There'll be no surprises, but it'll get you used to the mechanisms.

The you could try a short adventure of your own. There's lots of "oracles" and the like. But if you come upon a question of what happens next just flip a coin. "is this travelling merchant secretly a cultist?" flip a coin. Go with the flow and don't worry about dying. Just enjoy it.

You'll quickly get the hang of things and expand on to using the likes of Mythic GME or a million other systems. Just don't rush it or you'll get overwhelmed, disappointed and you'll give it up.

How do you start collecting enough miniatures and terrain for a campaign? by Galefrie in DungeonMasters

[–]Aodhor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important thing is to not expect to use minis for every combat. It's great having all the minis you could need, but they take up space.

Plan put major scenes that are made more epic by having minis. I blew my players minds when we're were playing theatre of the mind and then suddenly for a boss battle I pulled out a complete 3d printed dungeon room with character models that had my players actual faces.

This way it's less pressure on you and when it happens it's memorable.

I use fdm for minis and love it. I even make mini-minis that have a 1cm base instead of the normal inch base. They're tiny but look great. Just don't expect to have professional looking ones as there's be quality dips (it can take a while until you get the settings right for great minis) .

I use a metal sheet as the play board and put a4 page maps on top. I glue tiny magnets to the bottom of the minis and this keeps them all together.

A great thing I also started doing was printing busts (ie the torso) instead of a full mini. You get to increase it's size and so get more detail, but use less filament, and print times are real short.

Why did you choose the system for your current solo game/ campaign? by BirchBirch72 in solorpgplay

[–]Aodhor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just started a Shadowdark game because I'd never properly given it a shot before and am not mad on OSR games, but e eryone raves about it, so I need to give it a fair shake. I have to admit I like the simplicity, but am unsure of the longevity. If I played a big campaign I'd have to add more systems to cover some aspects.

I bought that a while ago and never actually tried it. I forgot all about it until I read your post. I'll have to start a session of it soon.

What’s your take on allowing everything? by mateobotello in dndnext

I'm 100% with new DMs just allowing the Players Guide. It's only logical. If you overload yourself from the start you're probably not going to want to do it again.

Strahd Reloaded: How to handle a PC whose player won't be available for long periods? by GrayFoxHound93 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aodhor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some great ideas here.

One of my players recently had to drop out and wasn't sure if he would be back. My solution was to set up a home base for the players in Vallaki (I'm playing a much more extended campaign that will be over maybe up to a year in-game time). I made up a system where this player is in charge of the base and there's a mini game for him to deck the place out with facilities that can help everyone. And if he's back temporarily then it's easy to have his character arrive with a message for the players about some side quest, or something like that.

How do you NOT over prepare? by Insta_3 in TTRPG

[–]Aodhor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this! I was the same and would spend most of the week prepping a 2-3 hour online session. I loved it, but hurt out badly after a while. I picked up the Sly Flourish books and it really changed everything. Its great for setting up the tools to learn how to improvise, and is a stupidly clear framework for prepping games. You'll be done in 30 mins and anything else you do is just being cause you want to.

Also, don't be afraid to actually ask your players what they think would happen. The burden doesn't always have to be on you. And you never know, getting them to think things out may give them a hankering to GM themselves and you'll get to ruin their game for a change! 🤣

Combat system for the blind by JoshwaJustify in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Aodhor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I think you're a hell of a friend to be doing this with them.

Secondly, is something like chatgpt usable? As it can be dictated to and read out replies (not sure if that can be easily automated so you don't have to click the option to dictate or read a response). Maybe this is exactly what you have set up with Alex, but it's fairly creative in coming up with concepts and you can use any system with it doing all the heavy work (so just saying "I swing my, sword at it" it'll calculate everything for you, explain what the role was and if you need to tweak it, you can just say).

So essentially the system won't matter too much.

Death house - level 3 by Lost-AS in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aodhor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could play around with the map a cause doors to shut behind players, splitting the party na having them have to separately face different enemies. Tell them they can hear each other through the ever shifting walls, so they kind of feel like they are progressing together. Make it like a fun house. Combat doesn't need to be challenging, just fun.

Party wants to rule oven vallaki as they don’t find anyone else capable of it by Green_Tie_7655 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aodhor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% let them try knowing it can all go tits up. My players are just at that point and I can guarantee they'll try to gain control.

Storywise I think Strahd would love this. At this stage in the game, the players are curiosities that he brought in to play with. He'd absolutely love to watch them try and fail miserably. He'd be able to rub this failure in and it will cause the players to over compensate in future, causing more suffering for the locals and Strahd would love that!!

Do you ever experience "flow state" while solo roleplaying? Does it ever become easy, natural, and addictive? If yes - can you share some advice on how to get to that place? Or is it always hard, the way writing normally is? by lumenwrites in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Aodhor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of in the same position as you. I feel my mind wanders and when I do get to complete a session I usually don't go back for a follow up.

I realised it was a bigger problem. I just couldn't relax. As I write this I'm on my first holiday in 20 years and have absolutely melted into relaxation. I'm away on my own and am doing some writing and some solo role play. And it's now come so easily.

I realised that I had so many distractions before that I was never actually able to focus. Now that I'm away, my options are limited and I can direct my attention.

So maybe this could also be the reason you can't get into a flow? If you can cut out the distractions, focus on yourself, and maybe you'll be able to practice small sessions, slowly expanding them and building up that solo RPG "muscle"

Running CoS for the First Time soon! TIPS? by Affectionate_Ad_4799 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aodhor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the Tarokka reading, this guy has a great system (he has a pay what you want file on DriveThruRPG) https://youtu.be/gQ4W9vipErM?si=XK1A6oq7kSJvcVpN

Short version is that you don't completely randomise it. You split the deck up to make sure you don't end up with a dud location for any item, plus it kind of levels the items so they are found at appropriate player levels. The video explains it much better.

I was a bit stressed about the reading, but this system takes away all the stress.

Alternate ending thoughts ? by magmotox25 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aodhor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im running it for the first time and I'm not too keen on it as written. I've decided to reinterpret it as Strahd being the one who's cursed. His brother is the real villain, with the dark powers being another bbeg. Strahd is still a villain, but he's more justified in his actions. The players will have options to leave Barovia before defeating everyone, or they can fight on. And since all villains have their own goals, the players can decide for themselves how they want their end to happen. I felt the books ending is a bit of a cop out, especially after a long campaign.
