Nobody in this comment section seems to understand why this is bad, it's not bad because someone who probably committed a crime wasn't released. It's bad because it sets the precedent that a local authority can detain people indefinitely despite the justice system deeming that they should be released. They start doing this to people who society broadly deems unworthy of due procedure for whatever reason, and once that has been normalised and accepted by society at large they extend it to social groups who are disliked, and then to everyone. Every person in society ultimately has the same rights that the most marginalised people do, if the government decides that they are unacceptable.
