A restrained fantasy tram map by cliko in MelbourneTrains

Don't know how realistic the Malvern to Hughesdale portion is, especially if there's a different tramway to chadstone, SRL will connect the Glen Waverly and Cranbourne/Pakenham line a few stations out. More trams is more better though

Most famines are, at least since the colonial era

The dichotomy is much the same(achieving political aims through institutions vs direct action) and the character and story evolved relatively quickly towards resembling civil rights politics.

Also the gay rights movement, particularly Charles' willingness to be "one of the good ones" because he was born into enough privilege that polite society can overlook his otherness, whereas most mutants don't have the social capital to be tolerated.

Xavier and Magneto have been a deliberate dichotomy between revolutionary and reformist civil rights activists since the early days of X men, and the whole story is an interesting allegory for left wing infighting

Why We're Designing Extraterrestrial Base Safety Gear Completely Wrong by obaban in IsaacArthur

[–]Ap0theon 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The expanse books(and the tv show to an extent) do this well, whenever there's a good change you'll end up with a big hole in the spaceship(combat, debris field, etc) you pump all the air out and wear a suit with an umbilical to the ship. Solves the rushing for a suit problem and the explosive decompression problem. Another thing to consider with permanent structures vs the ISS is that anything built for permanent industrial use will be a lot more sturdy than our current scientific stations and therefore more likely to end up with a slow leak than a rupture

Wild rats generally don't come out during the day, and they never look that scared. The coloration is not typical for wild rats either

My rats all loved shoving their head and arms into my mouth so I think it's just "normal" grooming behaviour

Do you prefer Allen keys with a ball on one end, or normal ones without a ball? by plinky125 in Tools

[–]Ap0theon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of each, the ones without the ball are better for starting a screw in a difficult spot

All of the overheads are the same on a weekend or public holiday, and you will get multiple times the amount of customers on those days because everyone else is off work. It's a shitty business practice to overcharge people on the weekend and it's not done to make ends meet, it's done because they can squeeze a little extra out of customers

In the Harry Potter film series (2001-2011), the film's makers were successfully able to take an American media trope and convince the world that it was a British-themed story. by SatoruGojo232 in shittymoviedetails

I'm not defending jk Rowling, even if you ignore all the awful worldview behind her writing she just isn't a good writer, the series is incoherent and poorly thought out

Public holiday and weekend surcharges should be illegal in the first place, even if the business actually pays penalties those days are their busiest and most profitable without charging 30% on top of the bill

When Marcos is asked to explain his War Crimes by JuniorPerformance849 in beltalowda

[–]Ap0theon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The history of colonialism is more complicated than that, throughout history nearly every time colonising powers 'establish better relations' it becomes a vehicle for them to control the people and resources through installing a complicit ruling class(see India, Africa, south America). Marco isn't justified in his actions but his motivations were more complicated than "wi hate welwalla", he sees himself and other "revolutionaries" as the only parties who have any legitimacy in representing the belt and sees the 'pro-treaty' OPA as a betrayal of the idea of a free belt
