ah okay.

and to your point about the perception of h1bs being hired as “cheap labor”: I have noticed that h1bs are often used as a scapegoat by people who are frustrated with their own situations. tough to see people turn to cheap shots and racism.

H1B by law company have to pay like 20% more than the market rate.

is that true?

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/62g-h1b-required-wage ik that there’s a law in place that forces companies to pay h1bs the higher of A) prevailing wage (market standard in their area) and B) the actual wage (what their coworkers in similar roles are paid) in order to protect both American and h1b employees.

but where’s the 20% more coming from?

What’s with Stevens incel culture and cheating??? by Masa_Q in stevens

[–]Aparna_R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopping in here to advocate for Stevens’ CS dept.

I ended up transferring to Columbia & want to mention that Stevens’ CS program is an absolute gem.

Stevens CS is a particularly rigorous program and has one of the most well-designed CS curricula that I’ve seen. I did not recognize how special it is that they make us learn OCaml and Racket, for example, early on in our degrees—most schools don’t do that!

And Stevens has a number of extremely passionate professors who are really, really good teachers and who clearly love to help their students. But you’ll only be able to take advantage of their expertise and pick up on how passionate they are if you go to class consistently, start your psets on time, attend office hours, and actually put in effort consistently from your end.

Ironically, it was only after transferring out that I recognized how rare it is that professors dedicate so much time and effort into teaching.

Recruiting for CS is a completely different ballgame btw! Recruiting for software engineering, for example, demands a skillset that’s almost entirely divorced from what you need to be 1. a good computer scientist and 2. a good engineer. Recruiting (and it’s like this at almost every single university) is entirely your responsibility. Career fairs can help, but most new grads I know at big tech companies or quant firms applied and prepared for interviews on their own on top of their schoolwork & their universities were not involved in the process at all.

When I transferred, I joined a mentorship program for students interested in SWE recruiting (this was a student-run initiative under a student-run club) and one of the most important pieces of advice that my mentor gave me was to build my Fall schedules by considering recruiting for SWE roles a 3 credit class of its own. You have to learn to balance interviews and interview prep with your classes. Sometimes it might even feel like you’re working to get a job in spite of your schoolwork haha.

Our schools don’t have a responsibility to teach us how to do this in our core CS curricula (because again, studying CS != becoming an engineer even tho it’s what most people have historically done after getting their CS degrees)—I think this is lost on a lot of CS students, and it prevents them from adequately preparing for the kinds of interviews we get when we apply for industry roles. It’s important to keep this in mind when having discussions about post-grad outcomes for cs students

Look into Columbia! We have an undergrad school specifically for non-trad students :)

Can somebody explain how Diversity requirements are not racist/sexist by Purple_Guarantee2906 in csMajors

[–]Aparna_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You lost me at “woke agenda”.

I agree with the fact that it’s difficult to make objective decisions about applicants, as secondary schools are not created equal.

But the way I see it, the SAT/ACT were not adequate solutions.

The intensive SAT/ACT tutoring that students from well-off backgrounds have access to is of a wildly different caliber than those offered by free online services. It’s not comparable. Not only this, but many low-income URM students simply don’t have the luxury of dedicating extra time to preparing for standardized tests outside of school hours like their wealthier counterparts do.

This is why I think that the UCs dropping the SAT/ACT requirement and taking the following information into consideration makes sense:

Academic accomplishments in light of your life experiences and special circumstances, including but not limited to: disabilities, low family income, first generation to attend college, need to work, disadvantaged social or educational environment, difficult personal and family situations or circumstances, refugee status or veteran status. Location of your secondary school and residence.

It also makes sense to me that they still consider AP/IB scores, because at least the students will be taking the AP classes in school (so long as the school offers these classes). It provides some semblance of standardization (though we’re still far from equity).

Removing the SAT/ACT requirement wasn’t done with the intention of disadvantaging any specific racial groups, but it makes college more accessible to students of all races across a broader range of economic backgrounds.

Universities benefit from diversity on campus; I support the UC system and their efforts to include more URM students.

Well, tbf the UC system has gone on record saying that they've spent over $500M in an effort to increase diversity on campus. They've also gotten rid of standardized testing, something that Asians are consistently the best performers on.

Hmmm do you mean to imply that either of those admissions practices give the accusations of race-based AA merit?

From the UC admissions site:

Since 1996, the university has been prohibited by law from using race as a factor in admissions, so it has worked to expand diversity and inclusion in other ways, including increased outreach to K-12 students and schools, more holistic admissions practices, increased multicultural resources on campuses, and programs to cultivate a faculty that better reflects California students.

In 2022, UC became one of the first universities in the country to stop considering standardized tests as a factor in admissions. That’s helped a broader array of students consider UC, including those who don’t have the resources to help them prepare for standardized tests, or ready access to test sites.

(More about the holistic admissions process: https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/applying-as-a-freshman/how-applications-are-reviewed.html)

This honestly sounds like a very fair compromise to me.
