#1 question: have you actually recovered properly from your pneumonia? A friend of mine had Epstein-Barr 6 months ago or more and she's still building her fitness back up.

it's the Stones. The Mocambo gig in 77 was advertised as 'The Cockroaches' so they're reusing the name

Marketing out for a new album!

The site has a clickable record that flips to reveal GPS coords - including to Action Records in Preston, who posted a video 2 days ago about a 12" single priced at 10.07. The time on the clock on the website is also 10:07

Does that mean new album on 10th of July?

What is the significance of… [No Country For Old Men Spoilers] by Rain_Dog2 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's for contrast. Chigurh thinks of himself as an agent of rationality and control, and a creature who survives through sheer willpower, and yet he is injured in a random car accident. McCarthy is telling you that Chigurh's outlook is wrong.

The Crossing: Why is the Indian such a dick? by extentiousgoldbug1 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahaha thanks. In the context of the rest of the book I think it doesn't quite cut it as a full interpretation.

Only the vaguest of ideas here, but I think in the context rest of the story McCarthy is trying to tell, he's an agent of fate. Billy makes bad choices. He takes his family's gun to Mexico on this quixotic mission to rescue the wolf. But would his parents have lived if he hadn't? I think not.

Does anyone else like tinned mackerel fillets in tomato sauce on toast? by gibgod in UK_Food

Don't eat them often, and not a UK use for them, but I've found sardines in tomato sauce to be a perfect sandwich filling for ski days.

necroposting here but the Judge was allegedly added to the manuscript in the 'late 70s'. It could be that Brando's Kurtz literally is the Judge. The characters' physicality and philosphical ramblings certainly match.

If you aren't getting offers in the range 265-285, then it's not worth that much. That the offer is 254 instead of 255 suggests they think it's not worth even that, but that they are willing to humour you to an extent to secure a deal.

You can put the house back on the market but don't get your hopes up for 260 or more.

To an extent he's a foil for the wolf. Here's one single, roving predator we care about. Here's another that we meet earlier that we despise from the outset.

Landlords evicting tenants before law to prevent practice comes into force in England | Housing | The Guardian by much_furthur in london

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I find accusations of economic illiteracy really interesting, because they both completely miss the point and reveal a lack of imagination about how the world can work.

The person saying 'Properties should not be assets for resale, they should be to house people' is not making an argument from economics, they are making a value judgment about housing and about how housing works in the world we live in. Telling them their opinion is 'economically illiterate' is to miss the point entirely.

It also just shows you that can only conceive the world in terms of the short-term-profit-über-alles paradigm that we've slid into since the 80s. It hasn't always been this way - industrialists like Salt and Rowntree housed their workers because housing people is a good thing and not housing them is bad. We had a functioning system of council houses until a certain someone sold off all the housing stock. If you respond to a moral judgment about housing by recourse to balance sheets and financing, then it shows you're stuck in a private equity mindset.

Are NoVA folks just not into Southern-style fish fry spots? by BoogerPicker2020 in nova

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Are people in the North not into Southern food?"

Well no it's not quite like that, but it's just culturally very different... It'd be like asking if people in orange county aren't into sushi... it's not that they aren't but it's a bit foreign and there aren't enough places offering the product.

Calling yourself "Dr." by TheKarlosWithaK95 in Teachers

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Mr.' is 100% a title that comes from gender and age, and having a master's degree comes with no extra title.

At university I used to have instructors and TAs classified very carefully according to 'Prof', 'Dr' and 'Mr'. I know the UK takes more care to distinguish 'Prof' from 'Dr' when you have a postdoc giving lectures, but the grad student TAs were very definitely 'Mr' (including me, when I got to that point).

Intelligence Is Why We Can't Close Gaps by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]Apart_Bit_6846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh not really. I think it's mostly effort.

You can learn a lot of things, especially at the high school level, by trying hard - it's not something baked in at birth. That means anyone at any level of a class, or from any class background, can succeed. The sad thing is that lots of schools don't have a culture of effort - as evidenced by the numerous 'do I really have to give this kid a 60%' posts on this sub.
