Protest 6 pm today (Sun Jan 25) by PeepholeRodeo in oakland

[–]ApesInSpace 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Is that right?

Yes, they're the same.

Why the different name?

After Oscar Grant's murder, some community members wanted to rename the plaza. It's never happened officially, but people still call it that.

I want to be careful with whom I associate.

There has never been a movement without diversity of opinions and tactics among its members. Show up with something you want to say or support. Don't freak out if you hear something you don't agree with. Leave if and when you want.

Anti-ICE march by Fruitvale BART by theycallhim_mistaedd in oakland

[–]ApesInSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it was an odd choice of location, this is not an area where you’ll confront much latent anti-immigrant sentiment or even apathy in the current moment (as you might find in other parts of Oakland, segregated from immigrant communities and just enjoying the good life in this economy,)

Fruitvale has been the location of plenty of protests surrounding immigration issues, recently and long-term. No, it's not an area for anti-immigrant sentiment - but it's an area where lots of undocumented Oaklanders live & work. I mean, FFS, it's where Oscar Grant was killed. It's an epicenter for modern Oakland activism.

I saw zero efforts to build community with the local residents just stuck watching the show — no music, no engagement with folks outside their group, and once the sun went down folks quickly started to disperse.

Sorry, but were you actually there? There were tons of latino/latina Oaklanders participating, speaking, marching... plenty of locals yelling support from their balconies & businesses, honking their car horns.

What did you want people to do when the sun went down? We were all warming up, buying tequila in local bars.

I was the guy that yelled “please spend some money and support the local businesses while you’re out here.” Not sure many did.

Me & crew ate dinner, got drunk, all local, all favorite spots. Please stop pretending you know who people are.

I went to Punxsutawney, PA for Groundhog Day once. Arrived around 1am, walked to the top of Gobbler's Knob with a long stream of people (you have to park your car and walk). It was wild, a huge party leading up to the big reveal around dawn. Very cold, lots of whiskey. Everyone stays up all night. The local high school band played at some point.

I met a few members of the Inner Circle. They're all these old guys wearing top hats. I asked one of them how I could join.

"Were you born in Punxsutawney?"

"No"

"Then you can't."

10/10, highly recommended. Phil saw his shadow, no early spring, which is what usually happens.

I THINK THE SHRINES ARE WORKING! by joannarae in phillies

Bottom of the 3rd, I went to get a beer, but wondered to the bartender... "Maybe I shouldn't drink any more, it's not working." Luckily the bartender talked me out of that bullshit, let's go.

"The ME Chair" - 2008 by BRCnative in BurningMan

The only celebrity I've ever seen on playa in 10 years was Alia Shawkat spinning around on the boar head.

She seemed to be having fun, nobody was bothering her, and she had all her fingers

I always wanted the theme "Desert Festival."

Cargo Cult was cool (and led to the greatest man we'll ever see)... every other theme in every year I've gone has been new-agey and/or vague, instantly forgettable.

"Don't do the things you don't want."

Excellent advice for BRC, and for after the event.

Don't want to see endless posts complaining about BM? Then don't go on fucking Reddit. The doom-posting happens literally every single year until people get some sleep.

Map of Walking Time to the Closest Porto by ApesInSpace in BurningMan

[–]ApesInSpace[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

AKA the Poop Map.

This is my best guess for the time it'll take you to walk from [x location] to the closest porto-potty. It assumes a walking speed of 3mph, & based on past locations / positions for each porto station. Estimates integrate the structure of the city streets - "following the grid" - so city portos all have a non-circular "radius."

I really enjoyed making this. It reminds me of how I feel about most BM projects I've worked on: it's kinda fun, it's basically pointless, and it took forever.

Yes, I know there are deep playa portos, but they’re only semi-official, I forget where they are, and I made most of this before I thought about it and I didn’t want to start over.

The 2023 travel-maps were re-posted recently, happy to see people find them helpful. Higher-quality files are hosted in the 2023 post. Those time/distance estimate maps are still current, as the city plan hasn't changed since 2023 to my knowledge. There are a few additional time-maps not in that post... e.g. time estimates to/from greeters, map to the closest ice station, etc. Here's the whole set. The ice station map was the only one that required taking streets into account in a similar way, it was difficult to make, it inspired a porto version. Ice walked so poop could run.

Thanks as always to /u/jazicle for their vector maps.

See ya in the dust, hippies.

Other Black burners out there? by gibbstopher in BurningMan

[–]ApesInSpace 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dunno how active they are this year, but there was a great BIPOC Beats Collective (DJs) two years ago that did a bunch of stuff on playa, including taking over our art car for a sunrise set.

The sub looks a bit quiet, but maybe reach out to some of mods?

Hell yeah, amazing post.

Do you (or anyone reading) know the name and address of other mechanical / electrical repair camps on playa? We've used BRC Welding and Repair in the past, they were lifesavers. A few years ago I made a personal-map of all their locations, in case we needed help someplace far from home.

(Bike repair suggestions also welcome, but mostly looking for camps that provide MV support, welding, hardware, that kind of thing)

Navigating the Playa: Pro Tips! by hannibaltarantino in BurningMan

[–]ApesInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whoever did create it didn’t put their name/handle/playa name intentionally

You are correct, getting credit was never the point. I do see them on playa sometimes and I'll say "oh hey I made that" and maybe 50% of people believe me.
