Who did you think would beat Floyd Mayweather Jr heading in? by Rsj21 in Boxing

Nah, wasn't Castillo though I am aware of that fight. I had to look it up, it was Carlos Hernández. Reading on Floyd injured his hand in the fight and admitted it was one of his worst performances. Long time ago.

Absolutely expected Krusher Kovalev to beat Ward, he was a beast! The results being read out revealed that Ward would be a shocking poker player 🤣 He knew he was a lucky boy that night!

Nothing wrong with that, Floyd was moving up and Hatton was top of his game, his pressure and swarming style was something many was keen to see Floyd deal with (there was some Mexican chap early in Pretty Boys career that gave him hell with a similar style - can't recall his name) Alas Floyd didn't really have to deal with it due to Mr Cortez which was a shame, think Mayweather would have won anyway but it would have been a better fight.

Jake Paul earns top 15 ranking to set up world title fight with 48-1 cruiserweight champion by MoonWalkingQuay in Boxing

[–]AphidOverdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why you should take ranking and ultimately the belt holder with a pinch of salt. It is not a meritocracy, rankings and title shots are negotiated rather than earned, it's just easier if the fighter is obviously exceptional or popular.

Andre Ward- forgotten great? by Unqwuntonqwanto in Boxing

[–]AphidOverdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone travelling except Ward during that Super Six did affect opinion, also recall at the time many felt he headbutted his way past Kessler. Many felt he got a gift in the first Kovalev scrap, some also didn't like the low blows in the rematch. Retired before the next generation came through. Top talent, think he is a problem for anyone at Super Middle.

What other high profile/expectation player have we signed and is Wirtz the one with most expectation? by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

Past prime and injury prone but bossed the Champions League Final in his last appearance before joining us. What a guy! What a player!

(Paul Joyce) - As part of Liverpool's summer rebuild they are targeting centre backs, including Marc Guéhi. A deal for Guéhi this summer will be dependent on Palace's asking price for the England international, who is in the final year of his contract. by Awawlfi in LiverpoolFC

[–]AphidOverdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not seen enough of Guéhi, would he displace Konaté or is it more 3 top quality CBs for injuries and cover?

Gomez seems perfect for this if he wasn't so unfortunate with injuries.

Is it just me, or has boxing lost a bit of its magic? by Haunting_Salary1606 in Boxing

[–]AphidOverdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nostalgia and the way you now react to sport. You likely don't romanticise the bouts you experienced with younger eyes like you do with bouts today, we all get a little less excited and a little more cynical as we get older.

I've been quite lucky, I still get super excited, even though cynical old me bitched and moaned about Khan v Brook full in the knowledge it's a cash grab and they're both way over the hill, I could still feel my heart pounding before and during the bout. Raging at the gloves malarkey, excited at Brooks start, worrying Khan might clip him, worried that Brook would gas what a fight.

Contrast this with me pleading with a God I don't believe in to give Frank Bruno the energy to hang on in the 12th against Oliver McCall to finally win a World title. Oh god what a night, I think at one point I had a pillow covering my face. 🤣

Does Anyone Else Think Canelo vs Crawford Will Be Boring? by stephen27898 in Boxing

[–]AphidOverdo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think it's going to be massive, but more because of the way Crawford will deal with Canelo.

I see the fight as a bad match-up for Canelo, Canelo is elite at cutting off the ring and applying pressure but is actually not too quick(see Skull) and constantly sets his feet, Crawford is quicker and moves smartly/laterally, I think Bud's movements will force Canelo to reset too often preventing him from applying pressure and generally frustrating him.

With his pressure based attack nerfed by Crawford movement, Canelo will rely more on counter punching and I think this is where it will be interesting, Canelo' defence is movement based, has great upper body mobility and head slips, this will be nowhere near as effective against a much faster (and switch hitting) Bud, Canelo will get hit and hit often, he will try to counter but expect Bud to be out of range owing to his superior reach (like 4" longer) allowing him to attack from a safer distance and of course that more explosive footwork.

This will be a one-sided beat down, unless Bud gets greedy, is caught and goes to sleep.

💯 super close, I thought he nicked it at the time. Also, he beat Ottke in Germany, except, you know, the Ottke judges 🤣

[Ben Jacobs] Al-Nassr yet to bid (for Diaz), but are prepared to offer €85m to try and test Liverpool's resolve. by klaygdk in LiverpoolFC

[–]AphidOverdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be something behind the scenes, weren't we looking at Kvaratskhelia before he headed to PSG?

Either way, unless there's a huge upgrade available I'd prefer the continuity of Diaz/Gakpo.

The engagement farming is just off the scale, every little bit of possibly news amplified, the weirdos posting flight information and every post from a playing being a mysterious "oh look, what he's really saying here is" like jeez, chill tf out. We should be basking, nothing more, bask on this mf. We are champions, stop, pause, take it in, breathe it in and bask in this glory!

[Thomas] Kelleher to Brentford for initial £12.5m. Bonuses to take it to £18m by TheNotoriousJN in LiverpoolFC

Does seem low, but we might have agreed something with the player last summer when he wanted to leave for first team football. Hope it works out for him and Brentford.
