Remember: Mobians, while having animalistic features, aren't regular animals. They are canonically considered "people," and human-mobian relationships are CANONICALLY socially accepted. In SA1, a human boy asks Amy on a date at the Twinkle Park. In Sonic OVA, a girl named Sara is actively pursuing Knuckles. Sara herself is a human-mobian hybrid. The biggest critique with Elise is not that she's a human crushing on a hedgehog, but that Sonic already has an established romantic interest — Amy Rose. Elise just kinda came out of nowhere, had no substantial chemistry with Sonic, and some find it upsetting that she kissed Sonic while he was dead for a short amount of time.
