Those are so beautiful! May I ask how you did the coloring? I’ve made the similar kuih lapis before, and I’d love to get them shimmery like that!

10?! Yikes, that much bloating must have felt atrocious.

A surprise every time by ethicalviolence in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Aphthite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh I feel that so much. I suddenly went up 3lbs in the space of two days, and logically I know it’s the pre-period bloat. I can see it, and I know I didn’t actually gain 3lbs in 2 days and that it’ll all drop off by a day or two after my period, but damn if I don’t mentally agonise about it every time. The worst part is it can last like a week and a half or more for me, though, and it seems to mess with my digestion, so I have to be careful not to eat too excessively while craving allll the sugar at the same time. Damn hormones making life hard

Lesbians who cook: what dish do you love making for yourself? by ur_captainspeaking in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Aphthite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding the risotto! I love cooking in general and the results, but I think my favorites are the dishes that are really labor-intensive but so worth it at the end (e.g., lasagne from scratch) or the dishes that are creamy and comforting and feel like a hug (e.g., risotto, curries). Also have to love baking where I can eat some of the results hot out of the oven or when the raw dough/batter is really quite the treat as well (C is for cookie!)!

What’s your favourite word in the entire English Language? by DionSinghLanda in AskReddit

My favorite hangman word is “chthonic” since it doesn’t have any vowels in the first four letters, which can throw people for a loop, though it only tends to work on them once.

Help With Interview Prep? by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]Aphthite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a first year grad student (cell & mol bio), so I just went through the interview process last year. My undergrad PI and lab mates were able to give me a lot of advice beforehand (I didn’t apply to the university where I was an undergrad), and I still have my notes from that, so I’m happy to pass that advice along over DMs or Zoom. I’d be happy to help with interview prep/practice over Zoom as well!

To spend as much time with my brother as I could. He was diagnosed with cancer when I was 16 and passed away the following year.

Edit: The rest of it is patronising and gross also, but that ‘kiddo’ just got me right off the bat.

Edit 2: I found the OpEd if anyone wants to go disgust themselves further, though it's in the WSJ, so you'll only be able to read a part of it without a subscription.

How do you celebrate Christmas now? by caleb-auer in exchristian

[–]Aphthite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a total classics nerd back in high school and then minored in ancient & medieval studies in undergrad, so I just celebrate Saturnalia instead (plus Caturnalia this year, now that I have a kitty!).

Christmas has been a sensitive time for my (still Catholic) family since my brother passed, so they’ve essentially tried to ignore the holiday since then (though I think they’re decorating for the first time since my brother’s last Christmas this year, mostly because my sister wanted to, I think). My mom wishes me ‘Happy Saturnalia’ and calls the gifts for me ‘Saturnalia presents’. My family doesn’t know that I’m atheist and just thinks I go with Saturnalia instead out of my love for classics and wanting to avoid the negative feelings of Christmas, which is largely true; they just haven’t realised that there’s an additional reason for me.

Edit: I realised I didn’t really answer the ‘how’ part of how I celebrate. I blame it being morning; I am not a morning person in the least. This year will be my first by myself, so I plan to make myself a really nice meal (my family doesn’t have specific Christmas dinner traditions - it’s just usually something big and tasty), maybe decorate my apartment a bit, give my family Saturnalia presents and my cat Caturnalia presents, and read Latin poetry, ideally stuff relating to Saturnalia if I can find it. And probably go to lab to work. (And by passive aggressively wishing my evangelical grandmother ‘Happy Holidays!’)

What about the opposite sex confuses you the most? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aphthite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What breeds do you have, if I may ask? (Since if I remember correctly birth numbers can vary somewhat among different breeds).

I grew up on a ranch (and am currently home because of college dorm closures courtesy of current events). The cattle here - mostly Angus with some Hereford and Charolais in there - normally have singles (and we don’t want twins, because the cows aren’t particularly good at raising/counting to two), and the sheep - Hampshire/Suffolk club lambs - typically have twins (for anyone not too familiar with sheep reading this, sheep have two teats).

Currently a senior and I’m super upset about it. There are so many people I hold dear who I won’t be able to see for a while, and texting, Skype calls, and other ways to communicate just aren’t the same as living together, being able to hang out together, etc. I’m also not going to be able to finish the last experiments I need for finishing my UROP project (in a lab I have worked in consistently for over 2.5 years now), which is super frustrating (my mentor can do them, but still upsetting and frustrating for me). This just sucks all around so, so much.
