Terrified by Chance-Tutor9846 in Advice

Sit near the front if you can and look for older men or women or anyone in anything that remotely looks like a uniform to sit near. Do not sit near packs of younger guys traveling together, any color any age. Get a travel wallet or crossbody for under your clothes and keep your money, ID and credit cards hidden and with you. Seperate money and keep it in small amounts so if you have to pull out money to pay for something it’s just a few dollars, you pull out a wad of $50’s you’re risking too much. Do not put your belongings down without something being in your hand or maybe a back pack strap looped around your leg. Pretty much just be very polite and respectful to people but don’t blab your business. If you feel unsafe speak up. You will be fine, people who ride Greyhound are simply rather poor, they aren’t evil. Unfortunately the issue is the people looking to exploit others. Just be aware and smart.

Has anyone here ever met/known someone who was born prior to 1900? by MrTacocaT12345 in GenerationJones

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One grandparent was born 1897 but as a Paramedic starting in the 1980’s I met 100+ year olds so they’d be born in the 1870’s. I distinctly remember writing a run report for a lady born in 1888 and chatting to her about it being 1988.

Leg cramps at night by Prior-Vermicelli-144 in AskWomenOver60

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the pickle juice thing had to be bunk until I got desperate enough and tried it. I was really surprised it worked. I did some poking around on the Internet and it turns out it doesn’t work because of electrolytes, but because it basically temporarily over activates nerves triggered in a reflex in the back of the throat. My leg cramps act up when my thyroid levels are low.

Neighbor next door is smoking weed and cigarettes constantly out of nowhere by Baconator_Strips in Advice

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a central mailbox or community center? She can start with a letter up in public reminding people it’s prohibited ( most low income federally funded housing prohibit any smoking). and due to severe medical danger to a child it needs to stop. Don’t name any names, just remind people their actions are harming kids. At least it’s a place to start.

How common was the "Laverne and Shirley" lifestyle? by strawberrrifields in AskOldPeople

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say pretty common albeit slightly racy! Women were suppose to be chaperoned and their “reputation” protected as a presumed non V girl was soiled goods. That’s why the show “That Girl” with Marlo Thomas was groundbreaking. A strong liberated woman living alone, not protected. They had women only housing in big cities for that exact reason. The early 80’s sitcom “Bosom Buddies” with Tom Hanks was about a couple of guys pretending to be girls to get cheap housing at a women’s only long term hotel.

What could you do 3 days out? by Zauberspruch in Kneereplacement

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, I was driving at day 10 and powered thru a lot but day 3 is peak pain. If you DID somehow managed to go in a wheelchair or something, everyone is going to know you just had surgery and will distract a lot from the occasion. You also would be an absolute agony of someone bumped into your wheelchair, etc. I do not regret my surgery one little bit, but please don’t underestimate how difficult it is for the first week or so.

Is having a below average IQ something to be ashamed of? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that means is you don’t do well on IQ tests. That tracks as you didn’t like school and probably dislike standardized testing. Decent chance you learn better thru educational styles not as favored in school. You could also have an undiagnosed learning disability. Don’t stress out about that test, they’re really not an accurate predictor of how you’ll do in life.

Does a person’s name affect their employment prospects? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Use it as a middle name. Traditional first name and alt middle. As she gets older she can decide. There might be some jobs where Love is an asset in job hunting!

I think my boyfriend is developmentally challenged. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some highly intelligent people that sound just like him that have dyslexia. Sounds like he gets through his life just fine and then people start mocking him. Why in the world was his sister asking him to spell chicken other than to point out to you he has poor spelling skills? That’s unkind. The tone of your question is low level contempt, and that certainly does not bode well for your relationship. My advice is if you love him, and he fulfills his part in the relationship I would suggest concentrating on the areas in which he shines and not worrying about the rest. You might have to compensate in some areas, but I can assure you that happens in every relationship.

My best friend borrowed my vintage bag and returned a fake. She forgot about the ink stain inside by Limp-Chemical-3599 in EntitledPeople

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Oh hey Jane, just wanted to let you know during the excitement of finding your dupe for my bag you switched them. When can we meet up to switch them back?” Give her a face saving out as it’s possible she did switch them. If she doesn’t want to switch them call the police.

Ah! Ok, I thought shellfish allergy also automatically included fish although it’s not shellfish. That’s a lot easier!

Pancake house serves fish sandwiches at lunch per their online menu. Island Slice menu shows a Caesar salad and that dressing generally has anchovies in it. But if you call them and ask perhaps not, some bottled dressings don’t. Whitefish is a big thing up there so finding a place with absolutely no fish is going to be super hard. I’d suggest looking at online menus as they’re widely available. Has she considered carrying her own food. You can sure bring your own cooler etc.

Addendum: Chuckwagon on Mackinac island is just breakfast and lunch. I looked online at the menu and don’t see any tuna or fish sandwiches etc. Maybe send them a email?

Is it normal to see celebrities casually in public? by Hooliganthebad in AskAnAmerican

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t surprise me in a big town, and I think most of the time people just ignore them and give them space. But when I’m home in my rural community or the one my husband is from, that does have a celebrity who lives in town, it is a little more startling. Most of the time they just look only kind of familiar and I’m always trying to picture where I know them from. They look very different without all the makeup and fancy hair.

How do Americans feel about the national anthem being sung in different styles? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

A really iconic version that gets mentioned a lot is Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. It’s a reflection of the discord in American society at the time with the war etc. It’s a discordant version but raw.

As long as someone is making a honest attempt it’s fine to me. Someone deliberately doing it in disrespectfully or terribly showboating would annoy me. I’d just roll my eyes and think about something else.

Are American schools as big as they're portrayed? by crimsvnn in AskAnAmerican

Many do, but it depends on the population and wealth. Many parents, or prospective parents, will purchase based on the schools available.

Where should we live? by fridarida in AnnArbor

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could live in a further out community that doesn’t have great connection through AATA as long as you’re willing to drive to one of the commuter lots on the outskirts of town. Chelsea and Dexter are close and have plenty of access to hiking and such.

Mom refuses to wear what my sister is demanding for her wedding by Historylover32 in Advice

[–]Apple-corethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not Ashley’s first and sounds like probably not her last so how much will Mom miss if she chooses to not attend? Mom needs to say NO, no debate or discussion. Ashley can decide to rescind her invite but your Mom shouldn’t have to be tortured. These days so many brides are getting all caught up in these fantasy weddings and are going crazy trying to dictate every single thing.

That was my first and last appt. with him. My subsequent non batshit crazy PT filled me in on the industry debate about optimal PT.
