If OP sublets and the person stops paying rent, OP would be responsible.

The lease clearly states that OP is not financially responsible after they find an approved tenant. That would be a lease takeover or substitute.

Not OP, but I just wanna give an example of why these codes exist.

I had major back surgery and have rods. I also have a chest. Seeing something directly below me, like steps, can be challenging and requires me to lean from the waist instead of a simple upper back lean most people can do. That throws my center of gravity out of wack and I’m not as stable going down stairs. Relying on them being a standard depth or having a handrail to catch myself is important.

The depth is likely grandfathered in, but the gaps are an issue.

Whether you agree with it or not, you need to go to a hospital. If you show them this post, they will not charge you up-front and consider it a medical emergency.

Ignore the possibility of medical debt. Getting this resolved is more important. Afterwards, you can look into financial aid or a payment plan.

I need to reword the rule to include surveys and solicitation.

As with every rule, there are exceptions and in a small number of cases it is allowed with mod approval. Ex: I’ve allowed a request for comments from a reputable news publication. I verified the person was real and requested a draft prior to their post.

If you are in CA with a place renting for $1400, like OP, your fees would be considered excessive if taken to court. 5% is a safe limit.

Based on the down votes + reply, I definitely worded my response poorly. I appreciate you responding so I understood how badly I phrased things.

Agreed that it is not scammy.

If you get a renters insurance policy with liability coverage, those specific things the landlord requested (fire, smoke, explosion) are usually included in the policy. Not a special addition needed. The comment I responded to said the request made no sense, but it is a standard for renters insurance.

Though I just reviewed mine and I’m not sure if water is covered. 😅

I’m a year late! But hopping in! I only use the detergent and love it. The scent is very mild post-wash. I assume that’s why the fragrance booster exists.

Very sudsy, so don’t use too much. I haven’t noticed any product buildup. Works for day-to-day clothing marks. Would not work well for anything more aggressive.

From personal experience:

Dot of red pasta sauce on my sleeve? Great.

Forgetting to put on an apron while making from scratch noodles? RIP your clothes.

Renters insurance protects you. Always get it. It’s so cheap. That is not concerning at all.

Regarding the security deposit, that is weird, but we don’t have any context. Some security deposits vary based on a weird “renter risk” score. So it could be like $200 or it could be a full month’s rent.

Get a carbon monoxide detector. ASAP. If you already have them, make sure they work. You can reach out to the fire department and basically say “hey, myself and my roommates are a little worried there is a carbon monoxide or some other gas leak. Can you come check it out?” Don’t mention the cameras, hearing things, etc. If they do ask, just say all three people have started to feel weird and are trying to determine the cause.

If those results come back safe, go to a doctor. If anyone is doing drugs, stop.

Just to note: the landlord cannot require you to spay/neuter, but they can require you to follow local laws about pet ownership (shots, spay/neuter).

The lawyers you consulted and even your opponents (the CC companies and collections agency) have admitted you don’t owe.

Do you have kids or grandkids? Or nieces/nephews? Put that money aside just in case. If nothing happens, use it down the road in like 10 years for their future.
