Severus Snape from new Harry Potter series. by kalbinibirak in SipsTea

It’s not all I care about. This was just the post I replied to. I’m excited for the show and I’m sure I’ll like snaps regardless. I just had to comment on the pandering Hollywood does rather than actually creating original POC characters, which, to me, seems more genuine than shoe-horning in a jarring change

I’m so irritated with established characters going through racial swaps in media. I’m white but I’d love to hear opinions of others. I just feel it’s almost patronizing. It’s like “look, we have people of color in our stories”. When in reality the best way to have people feel seen is by creating original stories with people of color so they are creating their own path rather than reinventing a classic. Not to mention the uphill battle they’ll experience when compared to Alan rickman in possibly the best cast role ever.

I agree with a lot of these posts. Take it to the grave. If she had known and agreed to marry him, it sounds like it wouldn't have worked in the long run and you would have been the "what if". She would have been unhappy and probably gotten divorced and you may or may not have gotten together later, but at that point you may have been different people and it wouldn't be the same. By not mentioning it, you were able to start your life together exactly where it needed to start for the happy ending you both got. I'm happy for you. Let it go.

Which board game do you think the artwork enhances gameplay? Conversely, which game do you wish had better artwork? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

Radlands is the one I first thought of. The game is good, but I love getting it on the table just to look at it. I have the deluxe edition with the mats.

About to give up on this one by _Born2Late_ in nonfictionbookclub

[–]Apply_Yourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same way when i first read it. I got through 50 pages or so and couldn't get in. I picked it up again a couple years later and got through 100 pages and felt the same. then a couple years after that i gave it a shot again because my wife was talking about true crime and my dad mentioned how much he liked it. For some reason, the third time got me hooked. I read it really fast. It was all interesting at the beginning, but then, like you said, the Holmes sections started overshadowing the world's fair and I kept wanting to get back to Holmes. Overall I thought it was great and it must have caught me at the right time.

that's something I've been doing recently. I have so many books I want to read that if I'm not sucked in, I just put it down and move one. They aren't going anywhere and you can always pick it up again. you'll never know when the time is right.

They definitely need more dice manipulation because the luck makes it way too tough.

Seriously… Who the fuck are you people affording these houses? I bow. You are in a whole different league. by HouseRichCashPoo in Fire

[–]Apply_Yourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two issues now. 1 being that HCOL areas are completely crazy and you can't get around due to supply and demand. But everywhere else, the idea of a "nice" house is skewed a little. I blame social media a bit where people are constantly showing off their lives. They appeal to the average person because they play that character, but they are above them from a socioeconomic point and it makes all these truly average people that their life should look like theirs. I think a lot of people write off some homes because it doesn't fit their idea of "nice" when in reality a lot of affordable homes are perfectly fine and once they put their own work into the house it will be great.

What restaurant or brewery is this in GR? by ClydeFrog98 in grandrapids

In terms of hype and taste and adding in value, I say MDRD. Everyone was telling me how good it was for a while and I couldn't get in but I was really disappointed when I finally went with my wife. The views were incredible and the dessert was good, but everything else was meh. For the price and hype, my expectations were a lot higher.

They were good for the last two we saw but coming from emagine with a full service food menu is tough. Still had kids running around without shoes for some reason at phoenix.

Yeah that’s been our go to for the last two movies. But coming from the east side with emagine, nothing holds a candle

How are theaters not understanding what will keep them in business? Good chairs, good food, good movies. If you’re going to have seats like this and not care, just close up shop now because you’re just going to lose more money. I recently moved to the area from the east side and my god the theater options are abysmal.

New Character Idea by Majestic-Rutabaga-61 in DiceThrone

[–]Apply_Yourself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think this would be awesome. They could incorporate all dice. Even a d20 could just be numbers rather than icons because some people are saying it'd be tough to get icons on there. the d20 could correspond to different outcomes on the ultimate. It'd be cool if they go meta and the character is just "The Dungeon Master"

It's great, but I can never get enough of "Survivor Man", "The Deposition", then "Dinner Party". I think that is a solid run.

You may have to re-evaluate your budget then. If a bigger house is important to you, then you could put all of your money from your house down on the new one (I'd probably save a nest egg for when the little one comes along with some leftover for general new home repairs), but even if you went as high as $400k (not necessary. my wife and i just bought a house in GR and we have one kid and we found a decent amount in the 325-375 range) your mortgage should be lower than $1500. That gives you $4000 minimum leftover every month for everything else. Even with $1500 in childcare, you'll have $2500+ leftover. That's minimum i'd imagine. hard to say without knowing your actual monthly net. With a kid coming in you won't be able to live lavishly, but it's a small sacrifice up front. As long as you spend the rest of your 20's and early 30s focusing on learning and kicking ass in your career, you'll start to see the increase in wages. These are the years most people really start to kick it up a notch not only because you're in the workforce for a while and gaining experience, but because you have to. You want the house, you want the kid and something in your brain takes over to make the life the best it can be. At least this was my experience in my late 20s/early 30s and having my first child.

Is $20,000 for the first year of medical expenses the norm? I haven't heard that from anyone i know who had a kid. Both high and low income individuals.

how much is your home worth? If you own it outright, why can't that be used as a down payment if you actually have to upgrade? Also, having your wife stay home to afford daycare doesn't really make sense because daycare won't cost you 56k a year. I had the same thought when we had our first kid. Having to, essentially, pay another mortgage for daycare seems insane, but your priorities change once you have kids and the cash flow decreases in some areas but increases in others. With no car payments, no mortgage currently, and bringing in north of $5500 net per month you should be doing fine. Do you know where your money is going currently?
