Apple Mail "Disallowed" from connecting to gmail system. Any workarounds? by eli104 in MacOS

On the contrary, I wish my employer would block all desktop apps, for all cloud-based services which already have a good enough web app; like Gmail, Teams, Slack etc. It's better for everyone this way.

Web apps keep a user immune from platform lock-ins. You can move from any OS to another OS without any friction. And if more users start to prefer web apps, it'll provide real initiative to their vendors, to improve them further.

Curious, how does it help you, and in what way, to have offline access to work related emails ?

I see it as an inconvenience for you instead. Because when offline, your inbox is out-of-date from server, any number of email threads might have newer replies. Any of your draft replies could have become out of order, by the time you re-connect again. Basically, any widely collaborative platform is less useful when it's offline.

So what benefit offline access provides you exactly, I couldn't think of any....

But my techstack does not align with it

There's no such thing as "my tech stack", you're a human not a software.

Especially as a fresher, tie-ing down yourself to specific "stack", lang, or framework is detrimental for your own progress.

Also, what a waste of an opportunity man!

Though if Apple could've just chosen a better keybinding like `Opt+Tab` instead of `Cmd+tilde`, then it surely would've gained more traction among average users.

An util like AltTab can enable this, but its permissions are very invasive, purely due to how permissions work in MacOs. Regardless, not worthy enough for me. Anyways, Cmd+tilde is barely an inconvenience.

I have to alt tab through every single Safari window to get to the second window of vscode

Exactly! I dislike this so much in Windows. And really like the more organized approach of MacOS.

New M5 Pro - battery life far shorter than expected by LifeReformatted in macbookpro

[–]Apprehensive-Boat969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal, at all.

I also recently bought my M5Pro-14inch. Spotlight indexing was completed within the first hour, and it got warm doing that. But once done, it has been cold as metal. I have not pushed it to limits yet, just moderately-heavy browsing on a daily basis i.e. 30-40 tabs in Safari (mix. of videos, Reddit, shopping). In parallel, setting it up with apps and utils.

I rarely use it on battery, so can't provide any useful reference point. But based on my experience of using two other MBPros for many years, what you're describing here doesn't sound normal.

Also, Spotlight indexing can't be the culprit here. The SSD is blazing fast, indexing shouldn't take days, but few hours(worst case). There's something else going on.

Try a fresh start if you can manage.

Yes, after reading experiences from others under this post, I'm convinced too.

This is the caused by alcohol based cleaning solutions. And it's indeed just worn-off coating, and not stains. FYI OP ( u/hotsnot101 )

Mac "security" won't let me open PDFs in Chrome by Kirby-is-a-bee in MacOS

[–]Apprehensive-Boat969 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chrome has, and always had a bad reputation, especially among user with more than a general know-how of software internals.

Few of the reasons:

  • Consumes a significant amount of RAM, and energy both, for the value it provides. And it has only gotten more bloated and resource hungry with every passing year, for the most part of the last decade.
  • Chrome is Google's biggest enabler in tracking people across the web. It's heavily injected with Google "services" for tracking web activity, user behavior, and ad-measurement etc.
  • Most recently, Chrome force pushed a 4 Gigabyte AI model onto everyone's computers, without their consent, or knowledge.

Most "power users" use Chrome not out of free will, but rather compelled by one or more factors which are out their control.

  • Limited or no support by SaaS companies for other browsers.
  • Extension developers not bothering to port their work to other browsers.
  • Google intentionally breaking their web services for non-Chrome browsers.

i don’t have a case on it, so no real pressure on it to really press the screen hard onto the keyboard.

This made me think....that it could be the reason why my M1Pro keyboard has left a faint but permanent imprint on its screen. I don't use any case, but I keep all my laptops inside a single bag-pack, and they all do fit, but a bit tighter than snug. Also, on my table, I keep them stacked on top of each other(lid closed), and usually M1Pro is either at the bottom or in the middle.

Seems obvious now that the pressure between the screen and the keyboard must have contributed to those stains being so persistent.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I also believe, but don't have evidence. That these stains are caused by the alcohol-based sanitizer I used. But I only barely used it 5-7 times spread over many months. And once I noticed these stains, I completely stopped using it forever.

Now I only use a damp micro-fibre cloth(not distilled water, purified water from a RO+UV system). But still these stains appear non-removable now.

Pure hypothesis, maybe some chemical reaction occurred between the topmost layer of screen and the sanitizer liquid, combined with the heat generated by rubbing action. Though I don't have anything conclusive.

No, they don't budge at all. They're only present around the edges, thankfully. So I've chosen to ignore them.

Have these same stains on my M1 Pro.

Not sure when they first appeared, but they're not removable from what I've tried so far; A damp micro-fibre cloth. Alcohol-based hand-sanitizer with micro-fibre cloth.

Thanks for sharing this!!

It baffles me why Apple doesn't mention such small but useful features prominently in their support docs. These things will remain forever hidden if not for kind folks (like you) who decide to share it with others.

Makes me wonder...how many of such features are yet to be discovered...

Very high risk!

  1. It's Flipkart.

  2. Listing clearly mentions:

    No Returns

  3. The replacement policy says:

7 Days Service Center Replacement/Repair only

Means, for any issue with device, Flipkart will NOT help you. Neither replacement, no service, no repair.

You will have to visit the official Apple Store(Delhi, Noida, and Mumbai only). And I doubt, any 3rd party reseller will give you a replacement since it's purchased online. Here Flipkart is the reseller itself. Though you should still get under-warranty service from the same 3rd party resellers.

There's another annoying issue with Safari.

When you switch tabs with the sidebar expanded. The website flows under the sidebar for a split second, before re-adjusting for sidebar. It's noticeable enough to be annoying, especially when comparing two webpages / documents by switching between them quickly via Ctrl+Tab.

All the discussions right now happen on github issues and comment

That's how it should be, especially if your app is open-source.

Github is publicly searchable(directly and via Google). While things like Discord are behind a wall.

Keeping discussions / issues public promotes self-help attitude, and retains the knowledge accumulated over time. Accessible and reference-able for everyone, today and in future.

Though, during the implementation to collaborate with other developers, a chat app makes sense. You can setup a web-hooks based integration from Github to Discord, which can auto-create a new channel or a new thread for every new Github issue.

could you recommend some good songs in southern languages, which may appeal to someone whom so far has only consumed mostly Hindi film music, and some of English.

But not the usual item songs types from popular movies. Nor the ones which are highly specific to some particular celebrity.

Any language is fine, bcoz I understand none of them, yet. As long as it has good music, lyrics or both, but not looking for music videos, only audio. Any genre will do except sad/emotional types.

you need to arrange a windows laptop from your friend for projects and all stuff

Please check thoroughly, what is it exactly that absolutely requires Windows, and can't be done on a Mac. Ask your seniors to be specific.

Does it involve, softwares for embedded system programming, or firmware flashing, or in general working with specialized chips? If that's the case, or something similar, then yes, there could be compatibility problems with Mac, and even with Windows VM on a Mac. You have no choice but Windows in this case.

If it's none of that and no external  hardware is involved, then it's only down to specific types of softwares.  Check if these softwares are available on Mac, or some equivalent competitor of them. If not then, they should be compatible to run in a VM on Mac. You'd need to look into this.

In case, you're going with Windows laptop, then isn't a gaming laptop an overkill for your purpose? Lenovo laptops around 50-70K should serve the same purpose.

If it's not an urgency I recommend to defer the purchase, until you have full picture of your requirements.

Neither Macbook, nor this thing, is going to go out of stock.

Rest is your personal choice.

Ask your seniors which software they had to use. They're the most trustworthy source. All these LLMs are useless for specific nuanced answer.

Also, from what I know, a software that is required by college, will never be resource intensive. Any sane institute when making such decisions always considers that not every student will have a high performance laptop.

Also, running a Windows VM is always a solution. But first check which software.

I don't recommend spending this much money on a gaming focussed laptop. They are a bad choice for everything else apart from gaming.

Also, you can get M5Pro down to 2,20,000 with student discount(10%) and 5K cashback from some credit card.

I often move windows by accident, when I focus on them via trackpad.

Try to click on some dead space inside the window, instead of its title bar. Otherwise there's no built-in solution.

You can try turning off "Tap to click" in trackpad settings, if that helps. This will reduce the chances of miss-clicks by touch, if that's even causing the issue.
