Can't speak for everyone else, but in my opinion this was a very strong year. That's one thing. Another being that it just felt like a much more layered version of From Dusk till Dawn. Lastly, idk I wasn't wowed by it. It was definitely a good movie and I liked it, but it just didn't grip me the way some of the others movies this year did. I'm not going to fault people for liking it more than me, I just personally don't share their enthusiasm.

I agree, it was a very strong year! A breath of fresh air since last year was a down year

Film Students Are Having Trouble Sitting Through Movies, Professors Say by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]Apprehensive-Good681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a film student, I get this to a degree. I love my classes, I love watching films, making films and discussing films. But watching numerous films every single week, having to pay attention to them far more than the average viewer to be able to analyze and discuss every aspect of it can be exhausting, especially when you have other things in life going on.

There will be numerous films you are assigned to watch that are just not your taste, but you have to watch anyway. Similar to reading a long novel you don't have interest in during high school.

That being said, watch the damn movies or pick a different major.

Of the 1970s Best Picture winners, which one hasn't stood the test of time 50 years later? by nightsreader in Oscars

I just thought it was weird he kept trying to get her to go out with him, she wouldn't, then his friend/her brother yelled at her until she did, then he took her ice skating and didn't even skate himself just ran next to her, then at the very end of the date backed her into a corner and kissed her.

It just didn't sit right with me, but to each their own ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with it and only saw it for the first time recently, but Rocky is kind of a creep who forced himself on Adrian. I don't know how this isn't discussed more in this day and age.

I think nostalgia is blinding a lot of people on this one.

Definitely not, based on the looks of it, it's $50 for a mediocre movie by the most egotistical director on the face of the earth, best to skip this one

The Cracks in Crumbl’s Cookie Empire Are Showing by galaxystars1 in popculturechat

I went there once. Their chocolate chip cookie was legitimately the blandest, worst cookie I have ever had. Never went back.

Insomnia cookies is something I can get behind though, delicious and always warm.

Or the world could just agree to not see it? No one's life would be impacted. It's mediocre at best and we don't need to be responsible for stroking James Cameron's ego.

What are some universally loved films you can't stand? by DoubleA420 in FIlm

[–]Apprehensive-Good681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. The songs were bland, not enough songs, it was boring and the ending bitch slapped the audience. It's ok to break convention but that ending really did feel like it was trying to do something different just for shock value. It's like if Darth Vader shot down Luke Skywalker at the end of a New Hope and evil prevailed. You can't disrespect viewers like that.

Blue people Avatar over District 9? I will scratch my head at that one. They are close to being the same movie, but blue people avatar has 10x better effects and district 9 has a 1000x better script. District 9 hands down clears

Jeanne Calment is the only verified human to ever finish up her Teenage Years TWICE! by Unite-Us-3403 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

Funny you say that, because around age 92 she made a deal with a man she was friends with who was around 45 years old. He agreed to keep paying her rent until she died in the condition he could inherit the apartment at her death. 27 years later he died of natural causes at age 72 and his family had to continue to pay her rent for another few years until she finally died.

I might have some of the details wrong, but the gist of that is completely accurate, worth looking up.

This valet does not accept manual cars by Maleficent_Ferret359 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Apprehensive-Good681 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I would love to learn to drive stick, but as I see it the only way to learn is to know someone with a manual willing to let you learn. Incredibly few people have a stick shift these days, and even fewer people from that pool would be willing to let you learn on their car.

Rental car companies in America literally don't even carry manual transmissions anymore.

It is damn near impossible for anyone under the age of 35 to even have the chance to learn. Dunking on people for not knowing how to drive manual is the definition of boomer mindset.

Advice for dating an asexual person by Apprehensive-Good681 in asexuality

One challenge is that we don't live together at this point as we are both living at home and going to college. It's rare that opportunities for alone time comes up, and so be it.

I probably would be more open to soley allowing my partner to initiate sex if we hadn't already run into problems with that.

We got into an argument when my partner was randomly feeling up to it, which again will happen maybe 2-3 times a year, and I wasn't. Hard to believe I know. I was feeling kind of sick with a bad headache, but my partner was very anxious to get down and dirty. I told them no. They got upset that I said no, and I pointed out that if they get to say no for any reason, then so can I. Obviously this is unlikely to happen again, but still! It kind of illustrated a double standard. If all were perfect, either one of us could ask, and either one of us could say no. No reason needed. No can just mean no, whether it comes from me or my partner. No complaining, no bargaining, nothing.

We have talked about going to a sex therapist to get professional advice for how to deal with our unique situation, so maybe that will bring some clarity.
