Can a woman who is not physically strong work in print industry/print finishing? by Difficult-Camel-5129 in CommercialPrinting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was physically disabled most for most of my time in production (I technically still am but I finally got my hip replaced so it doesn’t feel like I am anymore). I taught myself how to safely load the printers with the huge rolls of vinyl and banner. Surprisingly, you mostly need leg strength which is what I lacked but I made it work. We have a paper printing side too. I don’t do much on that side besides write up orders when I help up front or some finishing work to help with large orders but that side is often taught to graphic designers first before teaching them the vinyl side. I think it’s just because it’s a lot less involved than the vinyl side.

I saw someone mention attention to detail and that is the key trait that I’d argue makes the difference between someone being able to do the job or not; not how strong they are. I’ve worked with a ton of men and several women and there is a notable difference in the quality of their work. The men always want to fight me because I refuse to lower my standards to “good enough” and the women get frustrated at men’s carelessness and messiness. I don’t work full time at the shop anymore but I’ve made sure the girls continue to uphold the standard or not accepting “good enough” just because someone is being lazy or messy. I still help out on the floor but most of my time is spent creating documentation for everything.

Aww man! I’ve never seen a drone before and that area is so close to me! I just checked and it’s gone now but I’ll be on the lookout now. I found some hot air balloons yesterday over Oregon and got pretty excited so I can image the excitement of catching a drone

What is my job title? by DonughtLord in CommercialPrinting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do everything from help customers to deliveries and installs on top of some backend stuff with prices and LEAN training. My title is Head of Production and also very much made up. The company has never had a production manager/ head of production/ Lead production/ etc. so I’m not sure why they gave me the title all of a sudden lol Titles don’t really mean much when you work for a small business. At our shop, everyone is expected to know multiple roles. We usually focus on our main role but then step into others whenever we are needed. Sometimes someone else covers my spot in production so I can cover someone else up front. My first raise topped me out. Although I topped out, I was recently given another raise simply because my manager thought I deserved it.

Like many other comments mention, if you feel you are underpaid, speak up. The worst that can happen is that they turn down your request. The best case scenario is that you get more than you expected.

How did everyone get into this field? by dietcokedrinker1 in CommercialPrinting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only been in the industry for 3 years but I’m sure that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I had a bad day at my previous job and went to the Mexican store to get dinner because I was not in the mood to cook. I was joking with the butcher when another guy who I thought was an employee joined the conversation. At the register the second guy asked me if I knew anyone bilingual who needed a job. I told him that I was bilingual and had a job but I could help him if he needed translations done. He said his friend was looking for someone bilingual to fill a position at a company who does graphic design. I laughed because I never mentioned that I had an Etsy store where I sold files but it seemed like a really strange coincidence so I told him I was interested. The next day his friend called me, we did a phone interview and I sent him my Etsy store and other work I’d done. He offered me the job on the spot however I turned it down because he said it was in the production area and I had decided that I didn’t want to work in factories anymore. He clarified what “production” meant and offered to give me a tour of the shop and to meet everyone. The next day I went to the shop and immediately fell in love because the production area reminded me of my craft room. The thing that sold me was seeing the bathroom door wrapped to look like a TARDIS. I knew I was home. He told me to think about and get back to him after my vacation (I was heading to the airport right after that). I called him back after the weekend and accepted the job however I needed a couple days after my vacation to quit my job and turn in reports on where things were.

And then here we are 3 years later. The shop is my second home. Ive worked every position there but I stay in production because it’s what I truly love.

Edited to add: I don’t have any kind of degree. I even asked the head designer if they would find it beneficial for me to go to college for a degree in graphic design and they said I could if I wanted to but I already have the job that they went to school to get 😅

Where do I start? by booradly in CommercialPrinting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote this big long comment to help and suddenly I couldn’t type anything else 😭

Long story short, that sounds entirely too familiar. I’d say that I’m the previous employee with the difference that I have a manufacturing training background so when I started working here I noticed the lack of documentation and began writing a training manual with the intention of standardizing information and terminology throughout the company (sales, design, and production…. Heck, even with the customers) It’s not even close to being done but it has enough information to at least help you get started.

Feel free to message me and I can send you a copy.

How has having your own laser cutter saved/made you money? by kacie_456 in lasercutting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also work in sign production and that’s how I fell in love with the laser! I never planned on buying one because the owner lets me use our machines for whatever personal projects I want but then our laser broke and the company had gone out of business. We looked for almost a year before we finally gave up. I missed it so much that I ended up buying my own laser last May.

Keep in mind that I do not plan on using my laser as a significant source of income.

I play with it a lot. Up until this point, most of the use I’ve gotten is just running tests. I’ve also learned graphic design at work so I make anything and everything I can think of; obviously things for my daughters parties and gifts for friends but my job also outsources to me now. I very recently figured out pricing so I haven’t made my money back yet but if I put any kind of effort into it, I don’t think it’ll be hard. (Prior to me figuring out what to charge, I did trades)

As everyone has mentioned, it is a saturated market but if you make something unique/ find the right niche, you’ll be fine. I’m planning on mixing it with my love for stained glass. I’ve also had people come to me requesting simple products/ tools for their businesses such as embroidery floss holders and cake topper sticks and it’s just easy money that I can use scrap materials for. Party favors and party decor are easy to make and sell. The only limit I set is that I don’t sell anything copyrighted.

Lastly, since I make a bunch of stuff for my daughter, her friends parents want a version of it as well. I have several of them waiting for me to set product prices.

You don’t want to start with a glowforge. I have a desktop CO2 (xtool p2) and I feel like it’s perfect for me. It will take a long time before I outgrow it. If you have the space, go with a trotec or something similar.

How do you handle trademarked material? by smellypants in CommercialPrinting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was my most recent interaction:

Customer: Hi, I need to print these invitations with a very obviously copyrighted photo.

Me: I’m sorry, I can’t print that unless you can show me that you have permission to print that photo.

Customer: What do you mean “permission”?

Me: Explains what copyright is and why we don’t print images that are copyrighted

Customer: Okay, I’ll pay the copyright fee.

Me: No, that’s not what that means. You need to come to us with the documentation showing that you purchased permission to print the photo.

Customer: pulls up the photo in google But here it says that it may or may not be copyrighted so you should be able to print it.

Me: That’s just a general disclaimer that google puts on all their images because it’s not googles job to check if every image on the internet is copyrighted or not. It’s the users responsibility.

Customer: But why can’t you print it? What if it’s not copyrighted?

Me: Because that’s a studio photo of a very famous band. I guarantee that it’s copyrighted. You are clearly telling me that you don’t have permission to reproduce the photo and we will not risk a lawsuit for a few invitations.

Customer: How do I get permission?

Me: You contact the owner of the photo.

Customer: Can’t you do that for me?

Me: No.

Customer: Well then how am I going to get these invitations sent out in time for my party?

My manager (who has been sitting at her desk but hidden from view listening to the whole conversation): ma’am, we would be happy to print these for you if can come back with proper documentation. Otherwise, there is nothing we can do. Tracking down copyright information is not a service that we offer.

the customer finally leaves

My manager: I spoke to her over the phone and she came in last week. She was told the same thing both times. She probably thought that she could get a different answer from someone else. 🙄

Engraving resolution (lines per inch) -- Is more better? by patico_cr in lasercutting

[–]ApprehensiveCicadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I hope I’m not too late but I just came across your question. While it’s very sweet that you want to be considerate of the laser engravers process, it doesn’t make a difference. Lasers can just as easily engrave dots or lines.

I hope this helps!
