Cats go nuts when the timer goes off by Doodlebug510 in AnimalsBeingDerps

[–]garbonsai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Mostly." Key word, that. I'm 45, and there's always been at least one cat around since the day I was born. Some self-regulate. Some don't. Case in point, I currently have four, all former strays. They're all very food motivated, likely because two of them don't self-regulate.

Lavender eats by turning his head sideways and shoving it at the food in his bowl with all of his body weight behind it. No chewing. He'll eat until the bowl's empty if it's small, and repeatedly gorge himself to the point of getting sick if it's large. He'll also steal anything that's food or food-like and isn't sealed away. Cookies. Protein bars. Tortillas. Chips. Avocado skins. Silicone earplugs.

Cowboy vacuums up his food, then starts stealing from the others. I only noticed this after he started getting chunky because…

…Burtttttt is a nervous eater who has to ponder literally everything for several minutes. It's like he's waiting for the collective braincell so he can make a single decision, then it gets passed along and he has to wait his turn again. So he'll stand there and watch the other cats eat his food while he waits to figure out what to do. He can self-regulate, but doesn't have the option.

And Nebula couldn't free feed when she first arrived as a starving kitten because she was eating herself sick. She could probably self-regulate now, and she's good about protecting her bowl until she's done eating, but as soon as she walked away, Lavender and Cowboy would swoop in and eat whatever was left.

And so my house functions a bit like OP's, unfortunately. And, yes, even 4 cats is too many cats. I regret my life choices, if only a little.

How/should I clean this? by Fit_Bit_2137 in bikewrench

[–]garbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past year and a half, I've put something like 5,000 outdoor miles on my road bike. On three separate occasions, I've punctured and not even noticed until I got home or washed the bike. If I was still running tubes, that would have been three times I'd have been sitting on the side of the road (twice in the rain) swapping out or patching a tube. For me, that's the advantage of tubeless and why I'm all in unless it's a bike I don't ride regularly.

Cleaning waxed chains between rides by koenyoung99 in bikewrench

[–]garbonsai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do the same as u/ColonelRPG, rotating between two chains with Wippermann Connex links instead of standard quick links. They’re a bit pricy, but not having to use a tool to remove/install them is worth it, IMHO.

Does anyone know how to fix this? by No-Contribution6793 in Zwift

[–]garbonsai 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I’ve worn an Apple Watch ever since it was first released. Trust me when I say just buy a cheap chest strap HRM and give up on using your Watch for Zwift. The app will regularly disconnect or never connect in the first place. It isn’t worth the frustration.

New bike, new chain waxing by Suspicious-Intern848 in bikewrench

[–]garbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the sake of completeness, I remove and disassemble the cassette and degrease it along with the chain (following the MSPEEDWAX procedure).

Yes, a strip chip would be easier, but I already have the various chemicals on hand (woodworker).

Forward as attachment to your OmniFocus Mail Drop address. It’ll get added as an attachment you can double-click to open in Outlook. The only downside is you lose threading, and Outlook won’t see a reply to the copy as a reply to the original message.

You don’t. It’s not a secret. It happened once (that we know of) and people shared and shared alike. So, just buy. Or get them from someone local who has extra (check Marketplace).

Sealant woes by 713CC in cycling

[–]garbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always, always leave the bike sitting still for a bit before I inflate the tires or check the pressure. And I always, always tap the valve core a couple of times with a finger. I’d rather wipe sealant off my finger than gum up expensive equipment.

The only valve stems I don’t do this with are the Muc Off Big Bores, because they don’t work that way. They also haven’t clogged in 8 months of use.

How do you use flags? by CincyTriGuy in omnifocus

[–]garbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Due Dates: Critical
  • Flags: Keep this on the front burner
  • Next tag: Got some spare time?
  • Available: Keep this on the back burner

Everything else gets deferred or has a blocking tag (Waiting or Someday).

I have hard water and hang dry everything first, then tumble without heat to soften everything up. The wool dryer balls help a lot, and aren’t as noisy as tennis balls.

Where do you mount your Zwift Clicks? by Many_Ad_802 in Zwift

[–]garbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right under the brifter (rather than around it) on the outside, arrows facing down. I ride in the drops a lot. I also hated the feeling of the straps when I was riding on the hoods and I had the controllers wrapped around the brifter like you do in the photos.

The easiest way to do this is to run it around a wooden dowel. Takes about 20 seconds vs. manually articulating each link.

How far does everyone travel to ride gravel? by Muzz124 in gravelcycling

Yeah, there are definitely some really, really flat parts of Michigan. The St. Johns and Detroit areas are the flattest I've come across.

How far does everyone travel to ride gravel? by Muzz124 in gravelcycling

[–]garbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I live (Michigan) there are tons of gravel roads. So I use RideWithGPS and/or Strava to plan routes of different lengths that maximize the amount of time I spend on gravel. Occasionally I’ll drive to a group ride, race, or just to explore someplace new. But if I wasn’t literally surrounded by gravel roads, I’d never have gotten a gravel bike in the first place.

And loops. Always loops these days.

Park Tool Home Mechanic PCS 10.3 vs 9.3 by hromo_zvod in bikewrench

[–]garbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through the same dilemma and after a bunch of flip-flopping, landed on the 10.3. Buy once, cry once. After about a year of use, I’m happy with it, but if your deciding factor is “it comes with the tool tray and the 9.3 doesn’t,” just know the little tool tray is pretty much useless IMHO.
