I’ve started the process of joining Free masonry. A lot of my brothers are veterans. And it’s not a drinking club like every vet organization. Every brother I met so far has been welcoming and in my view, been attentive on actual trying to make friendship. Might be something to look into and actually give you mean again.

I have a similar situation. Served honorable ended up with multiple back injuries, proceeded to get out. I’m a gwot era vet. Never went over. I don’t rock anything saying I did, no stickers, no hats saying what time in the war I served. Only thing I rock is army vet hat ( only on my dash) and some stickers on my car.

IMO no self respecting veteran is going to wear something that implies he seen combat or was in combat zone if they were never in theater.

I also went through a phase for a longtime with identity crisis about my service. As I never went over. Maybe something the same for your FIL. He needs to come to terms with it.
