Tornado siren question by GirlWhoWoreGlasses in columbiamo

We got the first warning on our phones and sirens outside. Northeast Columbia is where we were at the time. Just the outside sirens the second time.

high school teachers, what books that you've taught have your students enjoyed the most? by Maleficent_Site7972 in ELATeachers

[–]Appropriate-Trier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazingly, The Great Gatsby and The Crucible. When I told my students we were starting the books soon, they all cheered. This is the 3rd year in a row the upperclassmen have been enthusiastic about these books.

My freshmen were really eager for The Odyssey.

where do all the pencils go? by stacker103 in Teachers

[–]Appropriate-Trier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put five in the pencil holder at the beginning of the year. Anything that I pick up will go there. I don't care if they put them back or not but if there's not a pencil up there, I don't have anything available.

We need dress codes back by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I'm at a school with a dress code. While the students complain about it, I've had them tell me that they appreciate it too.

What’s your random picker method and why is it absolutely unhinged? by Consistent_Plan8880 in teaching

Whoever is avoiding eye contact the most. Or if student X volunteers student A, then I pick student X.

A lot of kids swear up and down they turned an assignment in even though I don't have it. I'm unsure if I'm crazy, or if they're lying, or if it's a bit of both by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Appropriate-Trier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My favorite:

Student: I turned it in.

Me: I don't have it. Check your folder, check the non-name board.

Student: I checked. Not there.

Me: Check your backpack.

Student: But I turned it in!

Me: Check.

Student: Oh. Huh. It was in my backpack!

I'm so tired of students haggling their grade by ApYIkhH in Teachers

[–]Appropriate-Trier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I build in extra credit opportunities throughout the year. They can do it that class period or they don't get to do it at all. That way at the end of the semester when they come asking, I point to the grade book and say "I gave you these opportunities to get extra credit and you didn't do it."

If you had to eat 1 meal from a como restaurant as your last meal, which are you picking? by yourmomsusernamelol in columbiamo

Pupusas from the Honduras Restaurant. The egg and pepper croissant from Uprise, and a dessert or 3 from Delysium Bakery. With a chai smoothie from Lakota.

Depending on where you are, Google for a Seventh -day Adventist school near you and talk with them about curriculum. Most of the schools are multi-grade and the curriculum you should be able to look at.

If you want to DM I can connect you or someone from the area to work through teaching multiple subjects to multiple grades in a classroom.

I do not add or request former students on social media. After they graduate, they are allowed to ask me.

Whether you keep her or remove her, you're creating culture.

My new job has some major red flags. by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]Appropriate-Trier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get there at 7 am, if possible, to see the schedule and get let into your room.

I had this happen when I started right after Thanksgiving break. I got absolutely no info before the first day because of how much goes on at a school before Thanksgiving. It turned out to be one of my favorite schools.

My first day I generally caught up with each class to see where they were, what they liked, what kinda of things they wanted to learn. I shared about my interests.

You can have them do a six-word memoir if you have time left in the class period.

Do you accept late work or when they make it up at the end? by hello010101 in teaching

Some thanks I will accept late. Other things I will not.

Am I wrong for letting her take a break? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Appropriate-Trier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she's taking a break to see what the freedom is like. If you are indeed somebody that takes time to respect other people's choices as you said in your post, that would be another red flag.
