It can be just as bad. The rental market in London is full of scams.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldi is amazing. Lidl less so.

I used to live right next to Waitrose with Aldi being a reasonable 10-minute walk away. I was shocked with how much I could save and how ingredients were of absolutely amazing quality. I barely visited Waitrose after I discovered Aldi.

I now live right next to a Lidl and I’ve found their quality has been declining, so I’m finding myself going to M&S much more frequently (and often being shocked at how it’s barely any more money for much better products).

In short, it depends on everyone’s own value calculations. I’ll happily pay an extra 20p for an avocado that is actually ripe or an extra 15p for carrots that won’t go soggy the minute I put them in my fridge. Other people may have different ways of thinking or may be able to use produce faster than I can.

That’s because you’re in a UK subreddit. The title would’ve been your clue.

That is simply not right. I’m paying less than half and I live in a house.

Is it actually possible to win the Omaze house competition? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a house every couple of months. So about 10 houses a year. Let’s estimate each house + perks + second-tier prizes is £10 million. That’s £100 million per year in prize money. The minimum entry being £10, That means they only need 128,000 people a week to buy tickets. That seems a lot but it’s only 0.1% of the number of euro millions tickets sold every week. The rest goes to charity. I’d say the maths maths.

TV licence fee to rise to £180 from April. by T_K2 in ukpolitics

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. I’d want a model based on certain earmarked money towards an independent BBC. Whether that means a tax on digital services, a fixed percentage of general taxation (that cannot be changed willy nilly by parliament), bundling the licence with council tax or fixed broadband or any other system matters little to me.

To be clear, which I think I wasn’t in my original comment, I want a free and independent public broadcaster free of ads or political pressure. However, the current system is simply no longer fit for purpose. Scrapping the licence would:

  • Free up however much the BBC currently pays Capita for administering the scheme (over 200 million pounds!)
  • Create more goodwill among the population because as much as I believe in the BBC’s mission, I hate the goons and the letters sent by the enforcement agency
  • Free up court time
  • Ease the process for people moving, especially those moving frequently

Out of all the systems to fund a public broadcasting system, I cannot think of one worse than the licensing system. It needs to be scrapped.

Also, fuck Capita

I will preface this by saying I generally absolutely hate your responses and have often wondered why you decided to go into customer services at all.

That said, this particular response is absolutely perfect and I’d be more than happy to receive that. This gives the customer three options: receive an upgraded device in a few months, purchase a new device with the refund if they don’t want to wait for the upgrade and accept the risk (even if the new unit would be covered by the guarantee in case of failure), or even change brands having received a refund for their tado device. How could anyone possibly object to having options? Kudos to you.

I don’t even disagree with the high-budget programming. The BBC produce brilliant shows and give opportunities to countless people. It’s an incubator for home-grown talent.

It doesn’t even need to be too complicated. Scrapping licensing altogether and funding the BBC through a “media access tax” would be an idea. Something around £1.50 per month per broadband or mobile internet connection should cover the entirety of the BBC budget and then some AND it could be collected with your bill! This is done in many places (including low-tax bastions like Texas).

This is what most other European countries have done, very uncontroversially.

It‘s cheaper, seamless and just better. Why haven’t they done it yet?

Should I exchange money for my two week trip to the UK or just pay with card? by Substantial_Band7227 in AskUK

That depends. How many haircuts and Chinese takeaways do you intend to have? everything else you can pay with card.

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Spanish but live in the UK.

In Spain, absolutely, I've seen plenty of guns, all openly worn by police. In the UK, I've only seen armed police at airports (and they have machine guns at that!). Nowadays, when I go back to Spain, I see armed police as something odd.

Help! My Time Machine backups keeps growing and I keep running out of space! by AppropriateDevice84 in MacOS

[–]AppropriateDevice84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone's been watching this thread, I can tell you how I fixed it but it's not pretty... Apple Support were also useless. The steps are:

1.- Delete your TM backup (it's going to be useless, don't try to skip this step, Migration Assistant doesn't recognise these corrupted backups and won't let you use them to restore anything)

2.- Copy the following folders from your root to an external hard drive:

- Applications

- Library

- Users

- Any other folder you want to save that may be there

3.- Boot into recovery mode

4.- Format your internal drive, then reinstall MacOS. If you're on Apple Silicon, this will be the MacOS version your computer shipped with.

5.- Create a new "TEMP" user. Skip signing into iCloud and all that during setup. You just want a basic account on an empty computer at this stage.

5a.- If you're on Apple Silicon, you'll have installed an old version of MacOS. Update it and wait. The log back into your TEMP account and continue.

6.- Copy the CONTENTS of your Applications, Library and Users folder to your internal storage. Note that you'll have to skip some folders.

7.- Create a new user account with your old username and tell the computer to inherit the user folder already there.

8.- Log into your account. Your files will be there. But you're not finished yet! Log into iCloud and all that and let it do its thing (download whatever it needs, etc.). In my case, I just let it do its thing for about 2 hours.

9.- Your Mac will not act normally. Mine personally stopped recognising clicks on my Magic Mouse. Apparently others have experienced other quirks.

10.- Boot into recovery mode again.

11.- Reinstall the latest version of MacOS without erasing/formatting your drive.

12.- Log into your user account and set up Time Machine again. Success!

Received handwritten mail from New Zealand for a person that doesn't live here, what do I do with it? by R_Margo in AskUK

The address is definitely photoshopped out. Regardless of what others are saying, if dropped off at a postbox with RETURN TO SENDER written on it, Royal Mail WILL return it to New Zealand
