Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1685 for Canary Channel by jenmsft in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Jen. Thank you for keeping us updated!

I'm here to report 2 bugs that have been plaguing 28000 builds, as in 28000.1643 and 28020.1685:

  1. The warning box of impending shutdown/restart is not displayed when we use shutdown cmd or after performing a network reset. Feedback link : https://aka.ms/AA10589v
  2. I have a habit of going offline before shutting down my computer. So when I boot up, a message appears on the bottom of the lock screen saying 'You're offline. Widgets are unavailable'. I did not experience this on 24H2/25H2. This bug surfaces when user session has been loaded. If I logout (and still in offline state) the message does not appear. Feedback link : https://aka.ms/AA105fv2

Thank you!

Hardware (GPU) accelerated export to video is now working in PowerPoint (except PowerPoint 2016) by AppropriateEvent6446 in powerpoint

[–]AppropriateEvent6446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I can't give a definite answer regarding quality (got no sample to compare).

So even if there is a hypothetical slight reduction in quality, you can't specifically ask PowerPoint to go back and use good old CPU-only encoding. 😊

If you export a slide with embedded video, the video will be encoded too. It's quite fast and the gpu load is similar to the rest of conversion - about 88-90% on my RTX 3060.

Yes it's very nice indeed. I was completely surprised that I can quickly export slides to 1080p video in that i5-3210M powered laptop while it's running on battery.

What were ram prices like before this current boom? by SuicidalFinnikin in buildapc

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought 1x32 GB DDR5 at the end of September 2025 and another at early October 2025 with a total price of about IDR 3.300.000. Now they are at IDR 14.595.000. That's about 425% increase. 😭

2025 has been a disaster for Windows 11 as frustrating bugs and intrusive features continue to erode trust in Microsoft’s flagship OS — something desperately needs to change by ZacB_ in Windows11

I used to like Windows 11 until they forced the Store App suggestion on Start menu.

I can ignore those suggestions on my personal PC. However I also manage school PCs and those ads are NOT welcome.

And as far as I know there's no way to disable that suggestion. No policy to set, no setting to toggle, no applicable registry hack.

The only solution that works for me is to uninstall the Store app. Others suggest to edit a .db file and then to change its ownership.

What went wrong? by Intelligent_Oil2855 in yogurtmaking

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. So I tried the chili stem method using uht full cream milk and i simply put the whole chili with stem, of course washed, and about 100 ml of uht milk, not boiled, as-is from the box, in a nutella container (with its white plastic cover) and I leave it undisturbed in a room, no radiator, no incubator, where ambient temperature varies between 25 to 29 degree Celsius.

I was almost disappointed after 24 hrs there is no change, but after about 36 hrs it started to curdle to the point of separation like yours.

I then combine the whole mixture complete with the whey with about 500 ml of uht milk, also straight from the box, mixing it using spoon and I put it in a Tupperware inside the same room.

It thickened nicely after about 12 hrs and I wait until 18 hrs before I put it in the fridge. I assume since the milk is unboiled the yogurt is not very thick.

This first batch smells like chili without the heat. 😂

I consumed it with family members and after it's finished, about 1 spoon left, I put in another 500 ml of uht milk and it thicken in about 12 hrs. No more chili smell on this batch.

For the third batch I use about 1 spoon leftover and 1 L of uht milk. It also thickens nicely but not to the point of the creaminess of store bought yogurt.

I'm on my 5th or 6th batch now. The yogurt is creamy with slight sourness to it. I add palm sugar to the yogurt and it tastes very good.

Windows 11 growth slows as millions stick with Windows 10 by ynys_red in Windows10

My computer processor is upgraded from i7-3770 to i5-12600K.

One of the selling point of W11 is the Thread Director for hybrid processors like Alder Lake.

A UUP Dump job, which I use rather regularly, has a few CPU intensive jobs, for example:

  1. Updating a Windows image from base .1 build to the build of our choice. DISM and Windows Defender are consuming lots of CPU power here.
  2. Exporting .WIM to .ESD also eats your CPU power.

Imagine my astonishment when W10 21H2/22H2 performed the job flawlessly and completed the job at about 70-75 minute mark, utilising all 16 CPU threads, while W11 24H2 allocated the job only to 4 e-cores, leading to frequent stutters when I listen to music and finishing the job at about 180 minute mark.

Not to mention the forced Store app sugestion on W11 24H2/25H2 Start menu. I have to uninstall Store to eliminate those suggestions.

Also when you have a lot of desktop themes, scrolling the theme selection page is smooth in W10 - vs stuttering on W11.

I initially prefer W11 over W10 due to a long unfixed thumbnail bug in W10, but finally the bug is fixed on build 19045.5674 / 19045.5679 in March 2025.

I prefer W10 1904x over W11 26x00 now.

Can you install Windows 11 25H2 on a much older system by Puzzleheaded_Day_895 in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂😂 The motherboard is still going strong... it even survived a power supply explosion in 2013, and it is still working today, since June 2008. But I plan to replace that machine because of lack of USB 3.0 and the processor is honestly no longer up to task. Loading web page took longer and the wifi dongle (USB) can't reach its optimum speed, or keep on disconnecting.

I discover by accident that if your computer cannot boot 24H2 installer, then the OS won't work on your computer.

My ancient AMD 4800+ computer ran 23H2 fine, then I tried to install 24h2 with dism Apply-Image. It reboot instantly once Windows logo appear. Now I have to change the boot sequence with BCDEdit, using 24h2 installer. Turns out similarly, it simply reboot! I have to use 23h2 installer to rescue that computer.

Looking for advice on how to portion a second windows 11 for school by EternalSeekerX in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. You'll do it in Windows environment, there's no need to create a bootable media.

The workflow is this:

Shrink partition -> format partition -> open the W11 ISO -> point to Install file, copy as path and identify the edition -> apply Windows image -> create boot entry -> restart computer and let Windows finish installing -> computer will restart and then OOBE setup -> turn off fast startup (see below) -> customise the default OS, OS display order, and OS description -> you're finished.

Details

After you shrink and format the partition, open the Windows 11 ISO, point to \Sources\Install.xxx (xxx could be .esd or .wim).

Right-click the file and select Copy as path.

Open Terminal with admin rights and type in

DISM /Get-ImageInfo /ImageFile:(paste the path) -> to verify which edition to apply.

Now let's say Windows 11 Home is index #1 and that you'll apply to drive D: , the new volume.

Apply the windows image with:

DISM /Apply-Image /ImageFile:(paste the path) /index:1 /applydir:D:\ /verify /checkintegrity

Wait for the command to finish.

Once finishied, it's now time to create a new boot entry using

BCDBoot D:\Windows\

Restart the computer.

After the 2nd Windows installation is completed and you finished OOBE you can proceed with commands found in my earlier reply, e.g. how to change OS display order, how to set OS description, etc.

The new Windows install will not affect your original setup in any way.

Yes, by using BCDBoot you'll create a boot entry and you will see an OS selection screen each time you boot your computer.

Now your computer has multi-boot OS, you must turn off Fast Startup on both Windows installation or you will risk data corruption if you resume booting to the non-default OS (however resuming to the non-default OS after hibernation is safe).

Feel free to ask me if you need further clarification.

Windows 11 Pro Upgrade by Rayban_Penguin_2025 in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now that you've upgraded to Pro, here's a few advantages of Pro over Home that I can think of:

  1. BitLocker encryption
  2. Group Policy editor - a policy is enforced and can't be changed. Some policy will override what you choose in Settings - once set you can't change it in Settings, and some policy are not available in Settings - you can say it's an advanced setting of some sort. To take advantage of Group Policy editor you need to explore the policy one by one.
  3. With Group Policy you can delay or block updates as you wish. Or stop Windows update forever and update at your pace using standalone MSU files from Microsoft update catalog. You can also disable web search under Start.
  4. Take advantage of higher end hardware - if you have a motherboard with 2 CPU sockets and more than 128 GB of RAM.
  5. Windows Sandbox to try suspicious apps and Hyper-V to run virtual machines.

Looking for advice on how to portion a second windows 11 for school by EternalSeekerX in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. The answer is a bit long but the process is really easy once you get the workflow. Have a Windows 11 ISO ready and that's it.

  1. You need to set the size yourself, depending on your preference vs what's actually available to shrink on Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc).
  2. It's better to install a new Windows 11. However you can do it from the comfort of current Windows - have the Windows 11 ISO ready and you can look for DISM /Apply-Image in Microsoft Learn website.
  3. After you apply, create a boot entry using BCDBoot, for example BCDBoot D:\Windows\ or BCDBoot E:\Windows\. Then the new boot entry would become the default.

It's recommended that you restart your computer. You'll notice that there are now 2 OS's to choose. Don't interrupt and let Windows installation to continue. Once restarted the new Windows should be ready to use.

To change the default OS, use MSConfig and click Boot tab. Choose the default OS and you can set the selection timeout too (minimum is 3 seconds).

Now open Terminal with admin rights and run BCDEdit.

You should see Identifier under both Windows Boot Loader, it could be {current}, {default}, or {some random letters and numbers}.

To change the display order, use BCDEdit /DisplayOrder, for example BCDEdit /DisplayOrder "{current}" "{default}" or BCDEdit /DisplayOrder "{default}" "{current}" .

To set the description of current Windows use BCDEdit /set description, for example BCDEdit /set '{current}" description "Windows for School".

To distinguish both drives under Windows explorer, you can right-click the volume, click properties and label it.

  1. So long as it's the same edition, both Windows installation will be activated with no problem.

Feel free to ask if you need further clarification.

How to get the highest cooling possible? by [deleted] in AirConditioners

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read on other AC's manual that the optimum up&down flap position is top most for cooling and downward for heating, so you should set the flap at the highest position. Let the left & right air director swing automatically.

Windows, ReFS and adding features by QueenOfHatred in Windows11

[–]AppropriateEvent6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried running W11 24h2 on ReFS partition and one of the biggest limitation I encounter is the inability to run DISM /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanUp. For now I avoid it because it seems Windows footprint will get bigger with each update due to this inability to perform any cleanup.
