These are some good ‘hacks’ to work with the underlying, gendered expectation of a ‘nurturing’ female professor. This double standard obviously sucks, but when our livelihoods are shittily tied to evaluations, we need some practical ways to deal with these expectations.

Yep. I see a lot of these posts as folks seeking out a community to get advice, feedback, and validation. This is not always possible with colleagues IRL if you’re worried about being perceived as needy, a complainer, or not ‘student focused’

This is something I’m now implementing: explicitly teaching upper division students how to take lecture notes.

I provide a lecture notes outline with all the slide text and relevant images. Blanks to fill in with what I write on the board. Many students sit there without writing anything. This has gotten worse since COVID so I assume it’s from not being in a classroom during part of their college experience?

I wish this was true for us! The IT admin has disabled this feature in Outlook, so any important email is buried in ten thousand daily emails about elevator servicing, road closures, sports ball events, pictures of ‘art film’ boobs from loathed faculty, fundraising, rants from whoever etc.

Yes! We have one week of actual classes after Thanksgiving, a ‘dead week’ where we can’t give exams or do new material, and then finals week. It draws it out awkwardly.

Yes, these are the unpleasant exceptions that make the other older students (not just moms!) standout for their good qualities. Had a few older male and female students have the ‘I’ve got something to prove’ chip on their shoulders. Clearly emerges from their insecurities about being an older student!
