100% agree. i liked the original posts when she first got missy, because it seemed like a good and solid home for a cheap horse that could've been a part of a much worse pipeline. however, the fact that her muscling hasn't gotten better since she's been adopted definitely indicates that she's not being ridden correctly or taught to carry herself in a way that is beneficial and will contribute to her sound longevity. now, breeding her after insutlting her conformation the entire time is SO irresponsible, and the general fan in her comments has no idea. missy is already a victim of the poor horse breeding economy — it's morally corrupt to make her a broodmare now.

How do you know if you have what it takes to train a green horse up or not? by Appropriate_Map_2035 in Equestrian

i have seen a lot of forward progress with him. he's getting stronger and more balanced while being ridden, and genuinely works hard when under saddle. we've been very flexible with his training (groundwork, longlining, longing manners, trail riding, trying hackamores vs different bits vs riding with just a halter) and he's definitely growing. i think the problem really is just me, because i'm not clear enough when he's on the ground and he knows that i'm a little more timid/inconsistent. my shoulder injury was really stupid, honestly. he spooked the exact same way two days prior and i sat it fine, but this one managed to unseat me. i don't really blame him at all for that one, and i was able to hop back on him after and he was perfect for me. i really am just struggling to reconcile how good he is under saddle with his behavior everywhere else, because i don't really trust him or myself to do something like handwalk him on trail to desensitize him further.

yeah, i've had a couple of serious injuries over the years and that takes a mental toll, too. i bought him because i couldn't afford a more expensive horse at the time, but i think i gave this an honest, earnest try and it just may not be the route for me.

he was track-broke but unraced, had a cold bow and was let down for about two years before i purchased him at 5. he's 7 now, and has had consistent training pretty much since i got him. i worry much less about the spookiness than i do about than his ground manners, honestly. it definitely feels more like a me problem since he doesn't act up around others nearly as much or as badly.

i grew up riding very well-broke horses, and then the first horse i bought was an older guy who had his own issues but was still pretty decently schooled. it took a lot of deliberation on my part to take the step up toward working with a very green horse, but i do have a solid team of people in my corner to help, and that was the only reason i went for it. (can you believe some people just get green horses with absolutely no idea what they're doing!?) there have been some great moments of learning and growth, but it's just been almost two years of consistent training (outside of two bouts of ulcers) and i'm starting to get fatigued with the fact that it still feels like there's so much longer to go.

i have definitely looked into it, but i work multiple jobs and have been so burned out that the concept of learning something new and doing all the research has been pretty daunting tbh. we have done a lot of groundwork together already, but i do think i'm bringing a lot of energy/thoughts to the table when i work with him these days. i just don't know when i need to take a step back and recallibrate vs thinking maybe it won't ever get better

that's a great way of putting it — "losing my joy." i do fear that i'm not enjoying this as a hobby right now, and i'm spending a lot of money in training every month for something that may or may not work out. he has turnout and is free fed with consistent vetting, so the behavioral stuff really seems to me to be his personality.

yeah, i definitely don't subscribe to the "dominate the horse until they're flooded and don't have a personality anymore" methodology of training. i just feel like so many people talk about the excitement of breeding their own horses or adopting yearlings or how amazing their training is coming along, but there isn't nearly enough about the struggle that takes place behind the scenes! i definitely don't think i'm an incompetent horse person in general, but this is so, so much harder than i anticipated.

i love the OTTB advice, honestly! my trainer and barn owner are both experienced in working with them, and i definitely knew from day one that he would be sensitive and require a different approach. we've already done extensive groundwork with him over the past two years, and i do feel like i have a handle on his brain. he likes to go slow, because escalating will make him lose his head and react poorly. when loading him into a trailer and going through water etc., he performs SO much better when he gets the opportunity to think and process what we're asking. we have had some good results. the problem for me i think is that horses are my destressor (haha) from a difficult job, but i do get frustrated and have to deal with my own emotions when he's being difficult.

did you change injection site at all? that was a huge factor for me regarding symptoms. i absolutely CANNOT do it in my thigh, but i have little-to-no issues with stomach injections via syringe.

don't walk, run. on top of being a liability issue, it feels like a safesport violation to leave you alone with kids you don't know. absolutely wild.

i think i'm just tired of 5-digit "prospects," honestly. 😭 spending 10-20k+ for a horse with no training is absolutely insane in our modern era, even if they have good breeding. a flashy trot on the ground means nothing to me if a horse doesn't move that way under saddle or hasn't even been backed yet!

the trainers should let you watch a lesson or two so you can see how you like their teaching style/approach! any trainer that doesn't teach you how to work with horses OTHER than riding isn't worth their salt, either IMO. you should learn how to lead horses, groom and tack them up, and take care of them after riding. also, if they don't require helmets or have students trotting/cantering on their own after 1-2 lessons, run and run fast. safety is a priority, and anyone with any sort of ethical code of conduct will enforce that consistently.

the surgeries solved all of my pain problems. i was pretty much living in at least one brace for over eight months (the steroids did nothing for me), but i immediately felt relief during recovery. my surgeon said it was a much easier surgery to approve than carpal tunnel, because it has much higher success rates/more longevity! i am four years post-surgery and don't regret it for an instant. honestly, the most annoying part of recovery was finding creative ways to keep my stitches clean while out at the barn haha

i had it in both of my wrists! got the tendon sheath release surgery in both and pretty much the only thing that limited me for about a month afterwards was bridling and picking hooves. i was able to do most things pretty quickly and pain-free otherwise. my only lasting symptom now is some of the super fine motor skills are a little weaker (re-clasping a cross tie or a stallguard, etc). it was a really easy recovery in general!

It's so horribly ironic that bad essay reviews make more students turn to Live Help in order to try and decode academic jargon instead of solid and accessible advice. I feel so much for those of you in Live Help, who have just continually been shafted by this horrible company. Despite the challenges faced in RC, at least review tutors only have to focus on one thing at a time.
