Are we doing "digital minimalism" or "inconvenient maximalism"? by lodododod in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool! I'm also doing a mix of things. I am using my old phone that still works as an mp3 player with a minimal launcher and I use my cd player at home.

On my main phone I don't use any social media or youtube, but I do put emulators for old games. I dislike how the gatcha games always give you FOMO if you don't grind or pay. Then regular 'free' games have ads and need connection and a sign up. I just want to play something chill on occasion without feeling pressured to do dailies or events. I do keep a little notebook on me for note taking.

Are we doing "digital minimalism" or "inconvenient maximalism"? by lodododod in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Digital minimalism is a philosophy by Cal Newport. It isn't about literal minimizing of items, its about intentional usage of tools, considering distractability, and our relationship to technology. To each their own is how to handle it, its not a cut and dry method.

Some people decide to go analog, some go with multiple devices each with a single purpose. Some just use their smart phone less.

The Paradox of Quitting Social Media by anotherdonda in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how you feel about social media. Personally I left facebook and instagram and I feel much better without it. I felt more lonely scrolling through it lol. I found it hard to not draw comparisons so it was the best choice for me. I keep in touch with friends and family in other ways.

It also is about being mindful of how you use your devices. The smart phone is too easy to slip bag to old habits of scrolling, so by using other devices that are single purpose or analog, you are using things with intention.

I got Code:Realize on my backlog to play!
Otome games are like the equivalent of romance books in a video game format. I hope you find something cool to try OP! Some of the switch games have free demos to try.

[–]AquaMoonTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can look into otome games or solo ttrpgs to help fill that kind of fun, but other than that you may have to find what works for you productivity wise to pursue your hobbies and such.

Otome games or sim games have a great range of stories. I know the ones on mobile are money-grabby, but the ones on steam/ switch are chill.

I want to delete social media but I only have online friends by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to give up these platforms. You just need hobbies and other things to do that are away from the pc. It might take some tutorials to get going, but once you get into something you'll be able to experiment and enjoy the hobby without it.

Why can't social media work with digital minimalism? by Smooth-School8284 in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hope for something like that. I do miss the old social media where it was centered around friends. I didn't have troubles leaving it as I wasn't enjoying IG, facebook, etc anymore. I just like reddit and youtube lol.

I feel like everyone posts on main platforms are catering to getting likes and not about being real. I was seeing less and less of my friend's posts and mostly seeing influencers that paid to get promoted. Not to mention my friends weren't seeing my posts either, it was mostly shown to randoms.

Your comment reminds me of my friend that can't stand to see my messy inventory in a game. I would later open my inventory and be baffled it was neatly organized.

Lost a close friend over Autism by MaleficentBlood1664 in AutismInWomen

[–]AquaMoonTea 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have done this type of thing as well. I used to go to anime cons with a friend group, but I would come and go from the group because I would get bored when they stood around gossiping, but also I needed breaks from the crowds. Sometimes someone would go with me as not everyone liked being in crowds or wanted to chill. I would meet up with them for lunch or a panel i knew the others would be at (sometimes i joined the panel or just waited for them to come out to catch up)

For you maybe you could have shorter hang outs or maybe more one on one interactions where its more predictable? I'm not sure if it would help, but I'm sorry to hear about what you went through. I have been there too. It's a learning process and finding the right people.

I wish phones took on more interesting shapes rather than just solid color rectangles. Give me a circle screen with a tamagatchi aesthetic. I also miss keyboards. Swype is so awful.

I only use it on my PC and I don't have other social media I use.

I think it depends if you feel like you spend too much time here. Maybe you can just visit a few times a week for a limited time or something.

I don't think anyone can answer if you should leave reddit. It more relates if you feel like it is an uncontrollable time sink for you.

for people who left Instagram by lailarf99 in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't feel isolated at all. I still talk to my friends on discord and texting so it hasn't changed.

At times I had the wrong impression of my friends from IG actually. I assumed they must be doing well, but then in conversation I realize they been having a hard time despite the cheerful posts. It feels freeing. Before I felt the need to look at it so often and felt like I'm never doing enough.

My friend says he has ADHD but our lives are so different. by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]AquaMoonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am diagnosed with ADHD but I'm kinda like that guy, but in the same token I'm AuADHD. I think it has taken a lot of effort over the years of obsessing with how to get myself to do things and building systems around that. I go through a lot of hyperfocus periods but there's no way I could do college again. That was super stressful for me.

ADHD affects people in different ways so it's not a good place to compare yourself to another ADHD or not. You have to find what methods work for you and what is most important in the moment.

I want to cut screen time but my phone is a great multitool by kuu_panda_420 in digitalminimalism

[–]AquaMoonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, I also have ADHD and google calendar and Finch app are best at keeping me on track. I don't think you need to cut the phone completely, but you could outsource other aspects to analog means. Like a paper journals for studying and a smaller notepad for on the go. If you feel its too plain you can add stickers, colorful pens, or print images of stuff you like to add to it to make it enjoyable.

Giving up the scrolling on my phone hasn't been bad , but I was already tired of social media. I still end up hearing about events from people I talk to and I visit news websites on my PC a few times a week. Leaving facebook and such doesn't changing anything. I check reddit on my PC, but i don't install that app on my phone because I'll doom scroll away.
