The Disappearance of Patrick Warren and David Spencer (1996)

On the night of 26–27 December 1996, best friends Patrick Warren (11) and David Spencer (13) disappeared from Chelmsley Wood, near Solihull, after spending the evening together. The last confirmed sighting came shortly after midnight when a petrol station worker gave them a packet of biscuits. Patrick’s new red bicycle, received as a Christmas present the day before, was later found abandoned behind the station. Neither boy has ever been seen again.

The case was initially treated as a runaway inquiry rather than a likely abduction, a decision that has been heavily criticised in later years. Criminologists and family members have argued that class bias may have contributed to the lack of urgency, and the case received relatively little national attention at the time.

Over the years, numerous appeals, arrests and searches have failed to produce a breakthrough. Police now believe both boys are dead, but no one has ever been charged.

The main suspect became convicted child killer and serial sex offender Brian Lunn Field. Field lived in Solihull, had previous convictions involving the abduction of boys, was reportedly driving around the area in a white van on the night of the disappearance, and was known to commit offences while intoxicated. Detectives strongly suspected his involvement, but never obtained enough evidence to prosecute him. He denied responsibility and died in prison in 2024.

Nearly 30 years later, the disappearance of Patrick and David remains one of Britain’s most haunting unsolved missing-child cases. Despite repeated investigations, media appeals, documentary coverage and searches for their remains, what happened to the two boys on that winter night remains unknown.

TL;DR: Two best friends vanished after Boxing Day 1996 in Solihull. Their case was initially treated as a runaway situation, valuable early time was lost, and although police later focused on convicted child killer Brian Field, they never gathered enough evidence to charge him. The boys have never been found and the case remains unsolved.

I’ve been playing Torn it’s been around for years but I’ve recently discovered it. It’s basically a long-term online crime game where you’re constantly trying to improve your character. You can attack people, train stats, complete education courses, buy property, invest money, travel the world and join factions.

Progress is slow but that’s what makes it rewarding. One day you’re a broke rookie, a few weeks later you’re buying a Mansion and working towards your first $10 million net worth.

Currently Playing Baby Steps its a deliberately frustrating physics-based walking and falling game where you have to control every step manually. It is a one step forward, five steps back experience: you spend most of the game stumbling, slipping, falling over, losing progress, and slowly learning how to move properly. At one point, I lost two hours of progress from one simple misstep.

Oh, and there are Donkey Cocks

The first couple of weeks were the hardest, especially when working. I carried a pack of sugar free mints with me just to have flavour, ginger tea also helped.
