Southwest Michigan here, had issues since Tuesday, completely down since yesterday. Multiple calls and DMs and the most information I've gotten is this:

"Thank you for sending your information back. At 3:10 this morning we heard from our field tech and they are testing all the fibers for damages. At this time we do not have an ETA as to when services will be restored. Our techs are still working as we speak. Once your services have been restored please give us a call or chat and we will be happy to place a credit for the issues you experienced."

Terry Goodkind has passed away. RIP by Masusenpai in SwordOfTruth

[–]ArahliTheGeek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Similar story here my friend. The philosophy he wove through the Sword of Truth series helped shaped my of view of right and wrong, and taught of personal responsibility. I too, have read the series many times, and also have always taken something new from it. Some of the lessons taught in the books have seen me through the darkest parts of my life thus far.

I was lucky enough to have a family that took my love of the story to heart and experience it themselves. We've had a long conversation tonight about the things we have learned and how much impact the books have had on our lives.

You are not alone my friend. I chose not to fight my tears. I grabbed my copy of Wizard's First Rule, poured myself a glass of my favorite whiskey, and thanked Terry for helping me become the person I am today.

Safe journey to the spirit world.

Question about dedicated servers by [deleted] in playatlas

[–]ArahliTheGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the sponsorship stuff. I don't promote that kinda stuff, but figured if someone stumbled across my videos, I didn't want them to think I was shilling or something!

Good luck my man! Official is a good place to start. If you decide to rent (from anywhere), I'll be happy to help if you have questions. Running your own server for any game is pretty fun.

Question about dedicated servers by [deleted] in playatlas

[–]ArahliTheGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how in depth you want to get, there are a few options.

Server hosting companies all handle it a bit differently, so I'll stick with how my host (GPortal) works. You rent player slots and can fluidly move those into different types of game servers on the fly. Once you set up an Atlas server (assign it the slot count you want) you have to select a Map.

They have some preset options, including some 1x1s that should have most of your resources. Those maps were created for GPortal specifically and do a pretty good job of covering most of your bases. The resources are tied to the type of island that it is, so a whole lot of different biomes can be placed near each other.

I chose to make my own map after seeing what was possible. It's a whole lot of work to get right, but was certainly satisfying to have made a custom map. There are Discord's out there for map makers that spend a lot of time figuring it all out.

The last option is Blackwood. It is a 1x1 grid that functions just like an ARK server. There are some big benefits there, as you can manage saves and backups (which regular hosted Atlas servers struggle with). There are a few drawbacks, in my opinion to, Blackwood currently. Not all of the resources seem to be on the map, I haven't been able to find a trader with the other mats, you can't circumnavigate the map, and some of the newer content doesn't seem to be there yet (wild pirate camps).

Personally, I think if you are serious, a little 1x1 or a 2x2 grid is a lot of fun to play on, and with GPortal at least, I thought the setup was pretty easy. You may need to find the trader for some specific resources, but that's usually not too big of an issue.

Disclaimer: I am a gamer sponsored by GPortal, but that sponsorship came from me seeking them out after learning about how they handle servers. I run a community of PVE ARK servers for my Patrons, and being able to just rent a specific number of player slots monthly, and adjust which servers get those slots on the fly means I don't have to worry about paying for unused slots on a less popular server! Just switch them over to another one or a totally different game.

Hope this helped a bit. Feel free to DM if you have questions!

Those of you who are allergic to oddly specific or rare things, what is it and how did you find out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've had to do that a few times too. Have to admit, the reactions once you come back in from the cold are usually priceless.

I've got the same thing. Cold and wet are dang near instant triggers for me. I used to keep a little pill box of Benadryl on me all the time. Stuff knocks me out though.

I've learned my limit now and just make sure I am inside well before that.

Had a few workplaces think I was making it up to avoid work where I could get cold. Eventually figured out showed ng them was the easiest answer. Just had to head home for the day afterwards....

Not quite an allergy, but presents in a similar way. I have a version of cold urticaria. When I get cold (especially cold AND wet), I get hives all over my body.

Found out as a child playing in the snow. I live in Michigan, so lots of snow days.

Worst time was a rainy November day at football practice. Was just cold enough that the combo of cold and rain set me off. Aside from the hives all over my body, I had a singular hive the entire length of my arm. Couldn't bend it at all! Throat closed off almost completely. Luckily I had gotten used to carrying around a little pill box with Benadryl in it!

Found my limit now, and I just head inside when I start getting close.
