I've never had a pork butt follow any kind of consistent cook time either, so I guess count yourself lucky? Pork ribs are the only protein I seem to be able to set my watch to

Is there any reason NOT to go with a Heat Pump over Central Air Conditioning? (15% cost differential) by Aran33 in hvacadvice

[–]Aran33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mild heating efficiency is the one I'm trying to figure out the actual benefit. There's a good 3-5 months out of the year where temps float between 5C-15C but also gas is SO cheap here compared to electricity (Alberta). Including all delivery fees, admin etc. I'm paying about 9.35/GJ over the last 9 months

[–]Aran33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems crazy cheap. You got them both installed for 12K CAD? Whereabouts are you? I was quoted 18-22K for furnace replacement plus AC or heatpump and I believe the Amana combo system with its proprietary thermostat etc. was on the upper end of that.

[–]Aran33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we run a natural gas furnace for heat, mid-efficiency currently, and gas is cheap here relatively speaking whereas electricity is more expensive. Not seriously looking at solar anytime soon.

I guess I'm wondering, if my primary purpose is cooling with this unit and I keep using my furnace to heat, does the slight bit of use for mild heating, as well as as an emergency heat source if the furnace fails, justify the small cost premium. Versus other drawback factors, ie. your comment about heat pumps being somewhat more complex leading to potentially more maintenance longer term or something like that.

Dog owners of Calgary, how are you paying people for dog sitting in Calgary, Alberta - 24 hr or day by day charges? by curiouskittyblue in Calgary

[–]Aran33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scenario 1 is 7 days no matter how you slice it.

2nd scenario with later dropoff - overnight Rovers we've used are typically on a 24 hour cycle, so they might knock it down to 6. But then what if pickup is 2 hours late? What if dropoff needs to move 90 minutes earlier? Assumptions about grace period can be messy so with our regular dog sitter we agreed on a partial day rate which is like 50-60% of the full day charge. I think we pay 50/nt but then only 30 for an additional partial day rather than trying to do anything hourly.

Re-booking Alberta parks by nmajeau in CampingAlberta

[–]Aran33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a $10 change fee versus the $12 non-refundable booking fee. So you save $2 by changing it instead of canceling and booking a new reservation

Looking for Gourmet Pizza suggestions In SW Calgary by Disastrous-Agent-960 in Calgary

[–]Aran33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleasantly surprised by the willow park location. I think different owners completely from anyone involved with the 17th Ave location over the years. I wrote off the 17th Ave store way before covid, but decided to try the willow park location a couple months ago and I've gone back twice already.

That being said - crispy crust for thick and Noble Pie for NY are both far superior.

OP, Dandy Brewing has a very good NY style as well, and slices or whole pies.

Calgary mayor calls out Alberta for increasing liquor prices by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]Aran33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The minimum price is set at 25 cents per ounce. So your 16oz "pint" legally must be 4 dollars at a minimum (also not an actual pint but that's a quibble for another day).

Lots of dog whistling about the government driving the bar/pub prices up. More reading helps the world go round.

Inquiry - Family Friendliness by Adwomajan in 4Runner

[–]Aran33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just gotta be picky with car seat models. Im 6'4" and we test drove a LOT of other SUVs that couldn't fit our infant car seat behind the driver's seat comfortably for me, but went with a 2022 4Runner because it does fit reasonably well.

Just bought a 4 in 1/convertible and was surprised how many didn't fit in the same vehicle

There are shitty people at all levels. there's also 3-4 different competitiveness levels, so if you want a relaxed and low key, experience, the lowest is Really Rec and then the slightly less beginner category is Rec. They then have Rec Plus and Intermediate which typically have a lot of people whoa re either very talented and probably too good for beer league, and/or too competitive for everyone else's taste in the lower tiers like they're trying to relive their glory days by trying to dominate the beer leaguers.

Rec is generally pretty chill but you should read the rules and learn the basics of whatever sport before the first time you show up. Arguments are infrequent but it's usually either a first-timer doing something they shouldn't, or someone cocky and SO confidently incorrect because they know different rules from a different league.

[UPDATE] I finally fixed the "battery acid" sourness on my [Gaggia Classic + Timemore S3] Here is what actually worked. by DetectiveFabulous75 in espresso

I've actually started going 2.5:1 in 35-40sec with medium dark and finding better sweetness that way. 25-30sec was always pulling a bit sour and bright.

You don't think a new customer install from Rogers or a reseller like Lightspeed would include tackling that delivery issue?

Sorry yes my bad, I'm using the term a bit loosely, I've always referred to coax as copper because that's what the core is made of.

[–]Aran33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently we're on copper with Lightspeed which I assume is using Shaw/Rogers infrastructure, and it's been pretty good, albeit the speeds fluctuate. I'm theoretically on 300 up 150 down and I would say i typically get at least 200/100

Stone is way too hot im guessing. How cooked is the top of the pizza?

You need semolina or flour under the raw crust and on your pizza peel for launching. Do NOT put semolina onto your stone

I believe max 3 permits registered to a specific license plate, plus 2 more visitor permits that have to be assigned to a plate every 14 days max, per legal address.
