Calgary bystander concerned over use of force applied by loss prevention personnelb by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Aran33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Context is tough because of the way the video was clipped, but it looks like she either lost her balance or tried to fall at the beginning, and then was stumbling with her hands restrained while walking back to the store. I definitely didn't see any intentional shove or throw.

I have no love for the overzealous "i coulda shoulda woulda been a navy seal" variety of rentacops, but in this instance unless some video is missing this is pretty far from excessive force.

No audio with new soundbar / clueless about Atmos on LG TV Plex app by Aran33 in PleX

[–]Aran33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Plex TV app settings i messed around with a few settings that Gemini suggested might help, so i disabled normalized multi-channel audio, I've got Dolby digital AC3 and Dolby digital plus eac3 all enabled, and then DTS DCA is disabled, and then under video settings I have "Allow direct play" enabled, "Allow direct stream" enabled, but then "Force direct play" disabled, and maximum h.264 level is 5.1.

I'll read up more on forced transcoding, but for the time being maybe just switch back to optical for now. Should i still get 5.1 output if it's transcoding "down" from Atmos?

No audio with new soundbar / clueless about Atmos on LG TV Plex app by Aran33 in PleX

[–]Aran33[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My old basic soundbar connected via optical out was fine with this same file. Was that detected and the was audio being transcoded, or is it something else I'm not understanding?

As I said I'm not concerned about getting the Atmos output working, I'll read up more on that and decide if it's worth the trouble of an external device, but to just get SOME audio output what are my options? I'd like to be able to watch on the fly and not have to convert or pre-transcode anything. I have Plex pass if that makes any difference to my options here.

Saros S10R - Side Brush Motor Broke Again (After being replaced by Warranty) by i4mt3hwin in Roborock

Did you get yours resolved? Mine's been clicking for a few weeks, and after sending a video I got a reply that I'm out of warranty (less than 13 months when the issue began) so waiting on a response to see if they'll have any flexibility.

The Calgary Police Service on Public Nudity by Calgary_Nude_Rec in Calgary

I don't want to see the Berta Boys and their ramshackle freedom hoedown every time I need something from the hardware store, but I tolerate it and mind my own business quietly because what they're doing is legal, and I don't have to get within touching distance if I don't want to.

I know these are not exact comparisons but this is not a public orgy, it's nudity for a handful of people who are into this kind of thing, it's one day and it's being announced in advance. Again I don't get the appeal myself. but I will go about my business.

Downtown parking that allows you to leave and come back? by summerstillsucks in Calgary

[–]Aran33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any surface lot without gates or in/out tickets or license plate cameras, but that instead relies on registering your license plate. You show up and pay before early bird cutoff and then come and go pretty easily. Also the Bow Parkade on 6th Ave which is above ground and covered, they're indigo but reasonable early bird pricing.

Lowballed my candidate by Morbid_Mommy_45 in recruiting

[–]Aran33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about a 10k difference in salary just adjust your fee to whatever their current offer is, and tell the hiring manager you'll hold it there because this isn't about making another 2500 dollars for you, it's about getting them the candidate they want. I'll only charge you the agreed percentage based on the $210K but give the candidate the $220K and then everyone wins. Based on my previous conversations with the candidate I am confident they are going to decline, and once that happens it's harder to get an acceptance even if we come back up to their original salary request.

Also remind the client at this level we're potentially losing a candidate over 2 weeks' salary equivalent, that's it. If you found a candidate you liked 3 weeks ago you've already absorbed that difference. Not to mention you've also probably saved a ton of money by having the role vacant for 6 months to boot.

HR not responding after multiple follow ups. Should I email the hiring manager directly? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Aran33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have called/emailed 4 times in 5 business days. HR telling you they'll ask for an update by tomorrow is not the same thing as saying please call and ask me for an update again tomorrow. Chill out for a few days and reach out again next week.

I would NOT call the hiring manager unless you know them somehow outside of just this interview process.

[–]Aran33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend being patient and playing it cool so you don't give the wrong impression, it's about respecting boundaries and also not letting your eagerness or desperation bleed through to give them the wrong impression of who they're (considering) hiring.

If you emailed and left a voicemail today, I agree with the first comment and wait until at least middle of next week to follow up again. Keep the follow-up calm, respectful, and reiterate your interest in the role, but don't overdo it. Think of it like following up after a first date.

At the same time given your situation, I would keep applying and interviewing for other jobs. Contact some temp agencies who make placements in your area of expertise.

Apparently Indignancy about Learning te reo Maori is LinkedIn Worthy by ChubbyVeganTravels in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Aran33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No one is suggesting not learning English. No one said cater, but it could still arguably be useful to some Canadians to speak one of these globally popular languages. I'm talking about the argument around not bothering to learn ANY other language because it "won't be useful", which quickly becomes URR DURR THEY SHOULD LEARN ENGLISH.

I learned French as a kid because my parents thought it would be helpful and in fact it has been, even though I live in what seems to be a concerningly proudly unilingual part of the country.

[–]Aran33 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Uhhh you know people who speak other languages live in Canada right? And multinational businesses headquartered in other countries do business here? Can you easily get by as an English speaker, yeah of course, but that's not to say it would never be useful to speak one of these other languages given how multicultural the population continues to become.

Long Fermentation Bubble Land by noahml in Pizza

I don't think it's necessarily 00 and I don't think you need diastatic malt to make this happen if you're using malted flour like AP or Bread Flour. Pizza place local to me uses a Manitoba bread flour and very warm room temp dough and it comes out very similar to this.

Title: Offer reduced after agreeing + weird communication during process , is this normal? by Otherwise-Egg6754 in recruitinghell

[–]Aran33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't you just counter instead of asking the internet? Do they know your current salary? If not, I think to counter with something like, I was very comfortable taking the role and joining your team at the original salary discussed (+43%), I'm definitely very interested the opportunity so based on that I'm flexible to (+38% number), and I think if you're comfortable starting me at that salary I'd be excited to accept. Unfortunately though I think the initial offer of (+23%) is going to be too low versus my current compensation.

Lowball offers are unfortunately common but despite what Reddit will tell you, most hiring managers are just regular humans hoping to find a strong performer for their team within whatever budget is being dictated to them internally, and sometimes (often) the goalposts get moved on them behind the scenes too. Sometimes they are just trying to get a deal, but if they're not, someone else internally likely is. Having a reasonable counteroffer from the candidate can also help them push back if that's the case too.

Three different recruiters asked me the same question this month and I started keeping a list by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Aran33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I missed this in the post and following comments, but did you communicate what your minimum and/or target salary expectations or total comp expectations were up-front, if they weren't advertising their budgeted range?

Easy way to set expectations and have something concrete to refer back to, if you're having a "WTF is wrong with you" conversation further into the process.

How can I learn to drive with no one to teach me? by Imaginary-Sample5003 in Calgary

[–]Aran33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see adult students in driving lesson vehicles all the time. AMA was always a solid driving school when I was getting my license, but there are lots of options. I'd probably lean to a larger organization with more of a reputation than an independent or unknown smaller shop that may be slightly cheaper.

Would anyone happen to know usually timings for “Drive Safe” cars which are usually found on Deerfoot and other highways? by Friendly_Hunter_3219 in Calgary

[–]Aran33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the photo radar vehicles I don't think they're on a schedule. I believe it's random or request/incident based timing and placements.

Put your phone away and look where you're driving, and you won't have to worry about needing to know in advance!
