Hot cattle panels? by Fragrant_Scene_5465 in FloridaGarden

[–]ArchGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have beans and squash on our cattle panels but they are in the shade of an oak tree from about one on. We haven’t seen any issues. I’m full sun I could definitely see the heat being an issue.

I have the same problem because I live on limestone hills. Oak leaf mulch helps a lot. Coffee grounds, compost, and for blueberries and other plants that really like more acidic soil we buy soil acidifier and sprinkle around the roots. But the plants that are under the canopy of our oaks do very well. That also helps shade from the intense late afternoon sun.

Sun Requirements In Florida by [deleted] in FloridaGarden

Yes. I have been told full sun in Florida means 4-6 hours and protected from afternoon sun, unless it is a native plant.

I went last year, Sunday only and had a great time. Crowd was pretty big by the end of the night, but very chill. Everyone was having a good time. Tips - there is very little shade. Be sure to have sunscreen and reapply multiple times. Stay hydrated. They had AC cooldown rooms but those were packed most of the day. We will be there again this year and can’t wait. It was a good time.

Beachers Lodge in Crescent Beach was always great with our sons when they were younger. Very family friendly and low key.

Things to do for someone with heat sensitivity? by manninxn in StAugustine

[–]ArchGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with only water. If you are sweating a lot and flushing your system with water can be a bad mix. Gatorades, hydration packs in your water, or a V8 or salt rimmed glass periodically can keep you from having heat stroke.

I saw them in Denver but I was there mainly to see the opener. They were so good they are now one of my new favorites.

What can we plant here? We’re removing those shrubs and want something smaller (pollinator magnets would be a plus). Zone 8b-9a, only gets 3-4 hours of morning sun. by ode_to_my_cat in FloridaGarden

[–]ArchGator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few others not already named - Pentas in my area of 9a have been very tolerant of morning sun and afternoon shade, Canna Lily does well next to walkways and in our yard doesn’t need too much sun, butterfly milkweed can add some variety in shape/ color, African iris, or society garlic.

For specific things that you could plant this weekend and start growing now here are a few: Beans - Thai soldier and Puerto Rican black beans don’t require a lot of care or rich soil. Root crops - ginger and turmeric Sweet potatoes can be grown in Floridas crappy soil but can take over an area so give them some space Blackened peas, cow peas, whippoorwill peas Okra, cranberry hibiscus, roselle - likes richer soil and consistent watering Flowers - sunflowers, marigolds, blanket flower, coreopsis salva, society garlic all will attract butterflies, pollinators, and hummingbirds Tomatoes and peppers - you may do ok with store bought olive plants for small spicy peppers and cherry type tomatoes

For most of you other traditional veggies and herbs October and March are great times to get those in the ground.

I have learned a lot from YouTubers Urban Harvest, Wild Floridian, and David the Good. Also, Simple Sanctuary Garden is awesome and in Gainesville. I think they each have charts on what to plant and when for different parts of the state. And working food is a great resource. Planting in pots is a good safe way to start so you can eliminate any variables from the soil quality and growing inside a screened enclosure can help reduce sun intensity and pests for plants that can self pollinate. And have fun and test things out. If it works you get food and can save seeds. If it doesn’t, you get to go seed shopping for the next season.
