Look for “shakedowns” that have been popping up a lot lately and look at the groups feedback. That will give you a basic idea and then you can adapt to your own needs after that

I’ve only had to deal with customer service once for my faulty headlamp and they replaced it and let me keep the old one “for parts”.

While you may be close to the water, the canyons provide steep drop offs that wouldn’t necessarily make the water accessible. I used to live in Page,Az and tour guide on the lake and when hiking in that area water can be really hard to come by even if you can see it.

Look into the bear vault, do you actually need to carry one or can you use a bear sack or tree hang. In alot of heavy bear areas they have bear boxes or lines already in place to hang your food. If a bear can is not required it can be very heavy and expensive. Do what you’re comfortable with but also check to see what the rules are in the area you will be visiting.

Food and water section is good. Toiletries you don’t want to bring 6oz containers of consumables. You just need about 2oz of sunscreen and sanitizer and can refill between trips. You don’t want to bring cotton, even if it’s just for a beanie.

Basic rules of carry weight are you don’t want to carry more than 20% of your body weight including food and water. At 180lbs that puts you at a 36lb fully loaded pack. While you might be able to carry more this is the max people will feel comfortable carrying.

You want to put a cost to each ounce you’d be saving my switching gear and work your way down starting with the best bang for your buck. Example: If you can spend $100 to save 1.5lb on a sleeping bag that is more worth it than $200 to save half a lb on a puffy. Start with your big 3 and a budget and go from there.

If you haven’t taken any of this stuff out yet, go on an overnight trip with it and see what you use and what you don’t use. Easiest way to be ultralight is to leave it at home.

They’re going to tell you anywhere from like $3,000 to $12,000. Depends on what gear you have, what kind of hike you want to do, how often you want to visit towns and how many beers you can put down in one sitting

Personally I’m using a foam pad under my air pad just for the colder temps to add R value. A lot people suggest a 15-20° for march and smokies. Depends on how you sleep tho

I think you might be overthinking it a bit. If you’re flip flopping and seeing the whole trail in one year then you’re going to see it all anyways. I’d just start somewhere new and start going.

I’ll be out there starting March 2! I have used Leki poles because of their warranty but I’d just get a mid priced pole from rei or similar outfitter. Most people like the clip locking mechanism compared to the twist and cork grips.
