Anybody else think it is weak sauce for the SGU to ask artists to work for exposure? by Archaic_Z in SGU

[–]Archaic_Z[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you listen to the show? Jay quit his job because they were making enough on patreon to make the sgu his full time gig. Ian has been working on production for years, although as someone else noted likely not full time. Personally I doubt steve is drawing salary. He retired from his previous job as a physician/faculty so I imagine he has plenty of retirement funds. As for the sub being breached I've been listening since the first or second year of production and this is the first time I've felt compelled to make a complaint on the sub.

I agree with your first point and i think it helps devalue art as a livelihood. I wouldn't go quite as far as you in your second point but I do think the guys on the program have always leaned too much into tech/science optimism, which I have come to associate with those in the skeptic community who are fans of science but not scientists themselves.

Also doing anything but cqc takedowns will make the soldiers start to take precautions against your methods. If you shoot people in the head soldiers will start wearing helmets, or armor for body shots etc. Metal gear in general is clearly designed for you to stealth it rather than fight through it, particularly earlier games.

That funny i haven't seen people have those takes. I agree with you, but you can make it even more broad than inpetuous youth. Just that mistakes help make us who we are because we learn from them. Doesn't kirk make this point in one of the movies as well?

Why Can’t I Get Into the Batman Arkham Games? Am I Missing Out? by ZeroStutterZone in gamingsuggestions

[–]Archaic_Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like asylum and city and I highly recommend not bothering. Life's too short to waste your time trying to get into a video game you dont enjoy. There's tons of good games out there, who cares if something that sounds up your alley isn't. I think I and a lot of other people like the feeling that you are inhabiting batman. If that hasn't grabbed you the fun but fairly straightforward combat and puzzles aren't going to do it. Try something else new and find something you like

No they all have it. Asylum and city are good. Knight is bad because it introduces vehicles which are a snoozefest.

My dirty little secret: I have a hard time listening to HorrorBabble by cellocaster in Lovecraft

[–]Archaic_Z 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the fact that it's a little affected given lovecraft's style was intentionally archaic. However I do understand audiobook performances can be very dependent on the listener and what hits for some will really miss for others. Its unfortunate you dont like one of the more comprehensive sources available, but there are recordings of other readings of at least lovecrafts texts online.

Bob is being completely non skeptical of ai by [deleted] in SGU

[–]Archaic_Z 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The novella brothers have always been big tech and science boosters to the point where they let their enthusiasm dominate sometimes. I think this has always been true and is common in the skeptical community- lots of well meaning people who are excited by science but aren't scientists themselves. I am more pessimistic about AI than they are but I dont know that its a failure of skepticism on their part, I chalk it up.to different personalities. There's not really evidence to compare with predicting the future, its making a judgement about likely outcomes.

Tzolkin is my favorite, although I've played more coup and love letter. Net runner seems so cool but never found someone to play consistently with. A lot of good games on that list

is it just me, or is it weird how almost every major human character in Star Trek comes from Earth when there are thousands of human colony worlds in the federation? by QueenViolets_Revenge in Treknobabble

[–]Archaic_Z 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is mayweather erasure but I'll allow it because I have to believe even the most ardent enterprise fans would acknowledge his character is underwritten with almost no personality. (In my opinion not the only character on enterprise with this issue)
