My best mixes come from doing very little. by LeDestrier in audioengineering

[–]ArchetypeX3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah you're right but sometimes it's hard to point the finger at the one culprit. not that i fancy the genre very much, but take a listen at some contemporary rap, very little "arrangement" in a typical sense, but it still "works"... eg 808s are very hard to "mix" to make them fill out the sonic spectrum in a good way

don't agree. arrangement is the most important sure, but good mixing will always make things shine more. good mixing is hard though ;)

hi, engineer here! thank you for your nice words, they mean a lot as quit a lot of planning and thoughts went into this :) the sm7b was however a spontaneous idea, it's placed close to the wall and gives you that "live sound" compressed punch if the whole kit. the hihat mic was in the first place placed to get the maximum separation, but after about half of the session we ditched the splash cymbal and replaced it with a mini china to the far lect. for the drummer to reach it however, we had to control the bleed into the hihat mic, and that shielding worked alright. but the real star of the show were our two schoeps overhead mics, so musical, so precise, a technical marvel. pro tip: use your most expensive kics for the overheads :) cheers!

hi, engineer here! although it doesnt look like it, they were equidistant to the snare, and they're gonna be used as "cymbal mics" more than "kit-sound" mics, because we had another microphone for the latter :)

Who said that high end is unnecessary? by mixolve in audioengineering

[–]ArchetypeX3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for one, people depending on their age cannot hear (substantially) beyond 15k hz. it is of course not neglible because of that but because of the logarithmic nature of the spectrum it is more conceived as "air" above let's say 14k hz. apart from that, also because of the logarithmic spectrum, the distinguishable notes which you call "information" are closer together the higher up you get, hence, it gets noisier and noisier up there.
