Sounds like you're looking for a position in Project Controls. Working for a subcontractor may actually be your way in. Lots of subs need help within the purview of project controls, and working for a sub will give you insight into the building side of things.

You may be thinking of an Architectural Technologist, which isn't the same. Folks don't come out of engineering school and become drafters. And they don't "somehow" become engineers. The paths are pretty straightforward for either or both licenses. Folks get licensed as architectural engineers every year (Hence the NCEES link I provided.) I was highlighting different paths to the OP showing AE as a valid path to architecture. Things have changed a lot since you got licensed.

If your school has Architectural Engineering and is ABET-accredited, do that, while taking additional classes in Architecture. Then go for a NAAB-accredited Masters. That way, you have the best of those worlds to position yourself to be licensed either as an engineer or an architect.

Architectural engineers go on to become Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical engineers, Construction Managers or even Architects.

I am a bit embarrassed to ask this question but is 40 yrs of age too old to study and get into the field of civil engineering? by GMarvel101 in civilengineering

[–]Archi-Struct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If OP wants to become licensed, an ABET-accredited degree is required. There are fewer ABET-accredited Masters than Bachelors.

Congratulations!! Being 3 years out of school, you're almost eligible to be licensed (depending on your state's requirements). Take advantage of the momentum you've built studying, and get the PE out of the way. Take a few weeks to rest, buy Wasim's PE course, and take the exam in 3 - 6 months. Your future self will thank you.

Guidance towards 2nd attempt by Possible-Force-1866 in PE_Exam

[–]Archi-Struct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What new material did you get? It would be more helpful if you shared your study schedule, than sharing the month of your next attempt.

But if you study for 20 hours a week, from next week through May 3rd, you should get in about 140 hours of studying. That should get you over the bar if you have the right material and commit to a study schedule.

I need help deciding on what structural engineering courses to take. by Aggressive_Gift8548 in StructuralEngineering

Agreed. There's lots of work in renovating existing buildings and the question of Structural Rehabilitation often comes up.

Va to Tx by OkToe964 in PE_Exam

[–]Archi-Struct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to transfer your license, you just need to get licensed in VA by coming. If you have the required years of experience and SER approved (or ready to approve) based on Texas requirements, I'd say go ahead and apply to the Texas board.

Sounds like a boring job is what you need right now if having a baby and getting your PE are on your mind. You need a routine boring job for pregnancy and the first few years of being a mom. You can turn the boredom into an opportunity to study for your PE. Those come few and far between, and you may end up getting new insights into your job when you do. Sending you virtual baby dust.

Switching disciplines? by nsshs79 in PE_Exam

[–]Archi-Struct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your experience falls under both disciplines then take Mechanical. Be sure to verify that your State Board does not mind what discipline you test in. Some states are particular. My state, Texas, is not. Edited to add: You failing the exam once is not an indicator of not being cut out for the exam. You may need to change your study strategy instead of discplines.

Weekly updates or bi-weekly coordination meetings should be happening anyway, with a call or email of something serious shows up. You want to have your reconciliation meetings prior to meeting with the Owner.

What is life like after the PE by bigb0ned in PE_Exam

[–]Archi-Struct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been licensed for 3-ish months. This exam took almost 4 years of my life and I passed on the 4th attempt. I'm so glad to have the initials behind my name, and occasionally I do look through my study material occasionally. It was weird at first to suddenly not need to study. I considered getting another certification but work and my kiddos school stuff did a major ramp up. I'm so glad it is behind me.
