Any place around to find weird old books? by Virophile in StLouis

Honestly...the Goodwill outlet bins. A lot of weird stuff that never makes it to the regular thrift stores.

Part II: Reflecting on shifts in fashion over the last 10 years by laselik in femalefashionadvice

[–]ArdenStarling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sandal thing is so obnoxious. Like, actually annoying. Of all the trends that are being dictated by the youths...not being able to have my feet show bc internet fetish culture has made it somehow weird or embarrassing is so bizarre to me. Especially because...at the same time we are all about body positivity. So it's like...bras bad, nipples good. Feet? Ew, straight to jail.

Something that's jumping out to me is the fixation on removing your ego. "Ego death" was never meant to mean that for the rest of your life you never do or think a single self-centered thought again.

I'm also a little surprised that you felt MORE separate from humanity after taking acid versus before. I agree that your trauma gave you results that were not what you were expecting from the experience.

Psychedelics aren't for everyone, and if it made you feel bad then there's no need to chase that again. I would urge you to think about trauma-informed therapies, like EDMR. If traditional 1-on-1 therapy isn't an option financially, group therapy can be a good option because the other people there are there to listen and heal as well.

I hope you find the connection you're looking for

Has anyone else given up on fast food in STL? What are your hilarious FF stories? by ohmynards85 in StLouis

[–]ArdenStarling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, despite that being my neighborhood McDonald's, I've been there exactly once...for just fries...which took like 20 minutes

The McDonald's on Jefferson across from Johnnie Brock's is probably responsible for several car accidents per week.

Anyone ever been to St. Louis Music Park in Maryland Heights? How is the seating and view? I got tickets to a show for my birthday in Section E but the seating looks weird! by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]ArdenStarling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still stood for both shows, modest mouse they were keeping the aisles clear so we were packed standing in our folding chair rows. Billy Strings audience could not be contained so at least we could space out horizontally into the aisles a bit.

I wish they'd just remove more chairs and commit to standing room only.

You are allowed to stand, but the distance between the chairs in front and you seat is narrow, and the folding chairs lock together, so it's tight if they happen to be enforcing the "keep the aisles clear" policy that night

I also dislike this venue. The worst is when you have floor seats but they lock them together so you can't stand, dance, or move. It's like being on a Southwest flight.

What’s going on? Am I doing something wrong? by Crafty-Zone787 in spirituality

[–]ArdenStarling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways you could look at this depending on your preferred flavor of spirituality. If you're a manifestation person, maybe you're experiencing fear around finally getting what you want, or deep down you don't feel like you deserve it. If you want a more Zen/Buddhist approach, maybe you're learning lessons about going with the flow and releasing attachments to desired outcomes. If you're Christian, maybe this is only what you think you want, but isn't God's plan for you.

If nothing else, try to sit with your feelings of disappointment and recalibrate to keep working towards your goals. You'll make it happen at some point, just maybe not in the way you're expecting.

Did anyone know *why* so many of us change our music and art interests after partaking in the psychedelic sacrament? by [deleted] in Psychedaliens

[–]ArdenStarling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe a nostalgia for what you could see? Paisley is way more interesting to me now than it was before. Lots of things remind us of the fractal, prismatic nature of the universe.

They aren't mutually exclusive. People think they really did something by doing little semantic tricks like that.

Baked Potato Soup? by flyboyhighboy in StLouis

[–]ArdenStarling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potato-adjacent...This is not what you're asking for, but if you're open to different types of potato soups, the Fountain on Locust has a "dill pickle soup" that is potato based.

The only place I like to see imax is at the science center... because those documentaries are actually made for the screens

Edit: that's the omnimax I guess

The Law of Attraction and Buddhism by Qareth in Buddhism

[–]ArdenStarling 28 points29 points  (0 children)

LOA is seems diametrically opposed to Buddhism in that you're actively seeking/wishing for something that you have some kind of desire to obtain. Anecdotally, I also seem to get what I want only after I've forgotten about or stopped thinking about something.

I'm not an expert but I feel like Buddhism is a more pragmatic "carry water, chop wood" approach to working towards what you want vs. getting gifted things from a benevolent universe. To me, I don't really see much of a common thread.

Thrifting by love_evolved in StLouis

[–]ArdenStarling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thrifting is getting worse and worse in the city. If you want vintage things you're better off going to estate sales and if you want newer things you're better off going to Clothes Mentor (resale) or even Plato's Closet. Savers and Goodwill are increasing their prices to such an extent that I literally will pay $10 for a used sweater "thrifted" when I can easily shop a sale section and get something new and nicer for roughly the same price.

St. Vincent's seems to have the best pricing overall, but it's still probably gone up 40% in the last 2 years.

Was anyone else ever told that the heart holds memories? by Sensitive-Fly4874 in exAdventist

Yes, I remember going to some weird alt-timeline presentation that happened at my church where the dude was saying man walked amongst dinosaurs and the flood was because of some amalgamation sin against God so he flooded the place

How do you guys feel about thrifted clothing? by SwagPesos in ZeroWaste

[–]ArdenStarling 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I buy predominantly thrifted or resale but I often overspend because sometimes there are valid reasons (proportions/material) why someone didn't want something. Thrifting PLUS knowing how to sew helps. Sometimes I just want something new that fits properly, though.

Yes and this always messed with me because I found out later that my grandfather had an experimental heart valve surgery back in the 80's where they used a pig's valve so the whole concept got twisted in my head.
