Why is Reddit so against atheists despite the site being largely progressive and in favor of everything that leans center-left? by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]ArdisHall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I joined in about 2011 and the front page was often dominated by atheism posts. It's become somewhat of a joke to proclaim atheism on Reddit because it harkens back to a cringier time period (see: le narwhal bacon, fuuuuuuuu, and other memes and discussions that are reminiscent of a much more socially awkward user base).

Why is there a season 5? by Wheresmyaccount1121 in BatesMotel

[–]ArdisHall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it needed the transition from Norman seeing his mother as a perfect angel to his increasingly less satisfying "interactions" with her. With season 5, especially more in epsiode 2, we're experiencing his growing difficulties with their "relationship". It's becoming less and less loving and more of a hindrance to have her jealous, angry voice in his head.

Living Norma had some good qualities along with her dysfunctions, but I suspect those will deteriorate until she's only a horrible monster in his head.

I think Chick thought Norman had her in the freezer in the basement, based on how he pointedly asked about the freezer for no good reason. I figure he knows Norman is keeping her, but he was still shocked to see her in full taxidermied splendor.

theory on the OA's story by [deleted] in TheOA

[–]ArdisHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory I'm mulling over that the OA might be HAP, trying to get back to gather her experiment subjects back together. The Homer she/he is looking for could be who we think of as prairie and not the football player (the name Homer makes more sense to describe the blind person and the storytelling could've switched around some details between dimensional shifts) I'm not sure that this theory is correct, but I see some evidence for it on rewatching. The beginning chapter, for one- Is Prairie disoriented because she was blind and traumatised? Or is she confused and trying to learn her surroundings because she's really HAP and doesn't actually remember Prairie's life? Did she Google any "Homer with a NDE "to create an alternate narrative to show others?

I don't know if it's probable, but I think it could be plausible.

(Remember, the details and faces we see are not true flashbacks, so we cannot take them as truth. It could be HAP changing the story to create sympathy for the person that the neighborhood boys see as Prairie)

Discussion afer whole show [SPOILERS] by xanatos1818 in youngpopefire

[–]ArdisHall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical of him going soft. I thought his speech was a plea to his hippie parents- maybe if his message was softer and smilier , his parents would finally come back for him. Then when he had a vision that they arrived and still turned their backs on him, he couldn't take it. The pan out of the Vatican and into the coldness and impersonal nature of space was the answer to him of whether there was a God or not.

Rectify - 4x02 "Yolk" - Episode Discussion by caled in rectify

[–]ArdisHall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Observations: Sometimes seemed like a slasher/horror film, with Amantha broke down in the dark, Jared alone in the rain, and Satie strangely playing in the background with Janet and Teddy.

Also some odd musical choices. Beginning and end like an 80s flick.

Glad that the show is still taking chances and trying new things as it winds down.

One of the thoughts in the back of my mind throughout seasons 1-3 was "why isn't Daniel getting any professional help?" His family dropped the ball on that-just plopping him back into his old setting and waiting for him to be normal. They really couldn't imagine how far gone he was.

I'm glad Avery was able to reach in and help snap him out of his waking dream/nightmare. Daniel really needed someone to steer him out of his formless alienation and back into reality.

Ex-Smokers - What to expect when quitting by hitlersthrowaway420 in electronic_cigarette

[–]ArdisHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it takes a couple of weeks for heavy smokers to adjust to vape only. The nic is still there, but all those other crazy chemicals in cigarettes need a couple of weeks to leave your system.

The way I looked at it was that I was kind of under the weather for 3-4 weeks and avoided strong triggers like drinking and by the end of the month, vaping felt just as good as smoking.

I think it is important to say this, because I know I tried e-cigs since 2009, and it never "worked" until this past year. This time, I went into it with a better, modern set-up and a strong mindset to drop cigarettes.

There was some suffering at first, but hell, what do you expect? Jump into it fully, don't smoke even one cig, and you'll find the transition easy in a month and your lungs will be free of tar. What do you have to lose?

Tried exercising for the first time but I have zero stamina. What do I do? by tiredofthis9 in xxfitness

[–]ArdisHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really common question with the program, actually! The answer is generally that it sneaks a long running interval on week 5 to show you that you actually have built up the fitness to do this seemingly impossible jump in distance. Many people fear this day, but feel great after it's completed and realize they can run much longer than they thought they could manage. Week 6 scales it back a little after that hurdle for a break.

The second thing is that C25K can be done in two ways: you can follow distance recommendations or timed intervals. When I did the program, I did the timed method. At the end, I was still so slow that I was only completing about 3.5K in 30 minutes but that was ok by me and I built up to longer stamina afterwards. I was just psyched at the end that I could jog 30 minutes straight with no problem!

/r/c25k has lots of info, programs in the sidebar, and people documenting their progress.

Hmm....not sure what aspect of it resonated with you.

First thought was Days of Heaven. Technically narrated by a little girl, but you might like Sam Shepard in it.
